I see a lot of people posting there vin number on here and i wanted to find out why.
I cant remember the formula for it, but it is the last 5 numbers that show the production number right?

Because it makes it easy to know who owns a DeLorean and who doesnt.
There is a formula to the VIN. I just reference this:

It's also EXTREMELY helpful when troubleshooting particular problems which can be related to its spot in the production line.
I've made my VIN part of my DeLorean's license plate, my email, screen name, phone number, etc...
Call it a DeLorean thing.

It started years ago (mid 90s) on another Internet group for the reasons listed above and as a way to identify others. When you finally acquire one, it is a great way to "shout it from the rooftops" that you are a proud owner.

I've read that it also establishes if you could have shopped at Delorean One...

In 2012, saying you shopped at DeLorean One is like saying you were at the 1967 World's Fair. A quaint piece of history with no real meaning in today's world.

Aaahh. Expo 67 held in Montreal on a man made island. What a different time that was.

And subsequently are denied service if you aren't the same owner that had the service done ;)

There is a joke. It says that once in a while a few crazy men thought that telling jokes is too long, so they numbered the jokes. After this if somebody wanted to tell one, only told the number and everybody knew the joke and laughed.
Delorean owners are the same. You tell your number and everybody knows your car. The know how it looks, the basic features, the different parts and such. A VIN number tells a lot about the car. And as it is said, it helps in troubleshooting.

Ask and you shall receive. I was hoping for more then trouble shooting. I was hoping for something more exotic. Like it is a way to show you have a rare model or a hidden way of saying i have a gold car.
I guess it is the same question when someone asks why you bought a Delorean, because i like the car.

Also keep in mind it is because we can. With only 9,000 or so made, you're in a pretty exclusive club. If you drive a Corvette or a Mustang for example, do you think it sounds the same to say you are VIN 1,093,456, or to say you are VIN 3937? Just another thing that makes it a bit more unique to own one of our cars and not one of the other sheeple-mobiles.
VIN number. Nice. I've worked around chemicals a lot and my personal pet peeve one is MSDS sheets. Or your PIN number when using the ATM machine.

Well, it can be. If your car's VIN is 5xx, then everybody will be happy, because that it is a very early car. Over 20000 a very late car, if it is lower than 3200, than you may have a gas flap hood, which is desirable, if it is from 11741 to 11789, then "wow, middle east car", etc. As I said, it tells a lot of things.
If your car's VIN is 5xx, then everybody will be happy, because that it is a very early car.Sweet, I make everybody happy!
All joking aside, the VIN is also a way to associate owners with their D's. If you saw a DeLorean in person and it was VIN 1234, you might recognize that VIN and say "oh that's so-and-so", or you might find out later that it's someone you didn't know about before, or (rarer) you might discover that owner doesn't post their D online anywhere, so very little is known about it. The latter of the three applied for the first stock DeLorean I ever saw in person. For example, 558, one before mine, is believed to exist, but no one knows where the hell it is. The engine has surfaced (if I recall correctly -- PJ Grady's perhaps?), but the DeLorean itself has not surfaced. If I were to see 558 in person, I would take pictures (obviously), and would post about it online once I found out it's an unknown DeLorean. Makes the statistics of surviving DeLoreans even more accurate.
Still, some still refuse to post their vin's. I belive they are ashamed of thir cars, because of their vehicle history, because of the bumpers color or for whatever reason. I believe they should be pride but it is just my opinion. By the way, I don't post a VIN because I don't own a Delorean, I bought 2565 for my son Deloumis, then I bought 7134 again, for my son. If someone remember 7134 might think I should be ashamed, well, I'm not, I made some money and still have some parts.
If you own a Delorean, you should be pride and post your VIN.

That reminds me, I need to go find an ATM machine.
If you own a "D", you should know exactly where that ATM machine is! :)

The actual # was not the memorable thing. Besides, I did not write it down or try to memorize it.

I am sorry, this last post was way off topic.
So as for VIN #, in Ontario one can very easily do a search with vin # and know where an owner's vehicle residence is and the phone number and a lot of info, totally legally too. You don't even need the license plate or anything else.
I don't know if it is the same thing elsewhere but. So that is maybe why some may be reluctant of giving it.
OK, lets say you have VIN 1983, I go to your state DMV and request info. In Texas you pay $5.00 USD and they will provide you with last known owner info. so what?
You can get a phone book and for free find thosusand of names, addresses and phone numbers, so what?
Now, you see someone driving a Delorean, you can follow him and find his address, then do a free address lookup, now you have a name, so what?
Not to be rude but to me that is not a valid excuse.

Seriously. Especially considering the VIN is COMPLETELY VISIBLE ON THE DASHBOARD. Which means those LOCAL people in Ontario can walk right up to your car and copy it down. They don't have to go trolling through the Internet looking for VINs.
The VIN isn't some obscure and confidential secret like a social security number. All of these VIN-paranoia threads are ridiculous.

You're right, this is ridiculous. Some may be hesitant to give VIN because of that false paranoïa...

They don't have to go trolling through the Internet looking for VINs.And those that don't live in Ontario? Or locals that only know about it through the internet? I hate to sound contradictory, but while there are very good reasons to post your VIN number, there are also very good reasons not to. While getting the owner from the VIN number is fairly easy in many places, I personally don't care if someone finds out where I live or who I am. That's why it's not a concern for me, but for those that live in an area where theft is common (or those that have been robbed before), this is a completely legitimate reason not to post your VIN, in part or in whole. Some people just don't like creepy stalker-types, like that kid in the video section that trespassed onto someone else's property and broke into their DeLorean. That's simply not a problem here, hence my lack of a concern, but my understanding of someone else's concern.

I always thought there was some sort of unwritten code that dictates sharing our VIN number. Its just part of being in the community.

It's the same thing, hiding the VIN, as blurring out license plates in photos, except the plate is more obvious. Ultimately, if someone wanted to look up the information, there are ways to do it. Since there are, in my case, at least 5 pictures taken of my car any time that I go out, I couldn't care less if someone knows my VIN. It's not a secret or anything you can't get from a car show.
