Finally pulled the trigger on a DeLorean from DMC Florida. My baby is VIN# 10084. Adding the Wings A Loft, cruise, and upgrading the headlights. Hoping to take delivery by this Friday. In the meantime I went to the local auto show yesterday with my motorcycle (thank you very much- 1st Place 1985 Kawasaki GPZ900r Ninja) and the hit of the show was the local DeLorean. It even garnered more attention that the nearby $179,000 Ferrari Spyder. I feel pretty proud to be able to own a DeLorean -will post some pics upon delivery. In the meantime, I enjoy reading all of your posts and thanks for this forum!

Is Derek the former owner? I hadn't heard any history about the owner/car other than the shows it participated in.

Yep, this is Derek's car. I have put in some wrench time on her myself. Glad it's going to a good home.

Hahaha. Yep thats my car. I assume Tom managed to get everything worked out but I didn't get an update. Funny to learn my car sold on DMCTalk. :)
Feel free to ping me with any questions or if you want more detailed history!
For those in the club that see the thread - I am only getting out of ownership, not leaving the club or community. For cybercusp he is a new father of a beautiful DMC awaiting delivery, and I am a new father as of 8-4-2012 - my first son Dean was born. This was the main reason I had decided to sell the car I have poured blood and sweat into over the past 7 years of ownership. Its been a fun ride, however, its now time to take on a more family friendly hobby for the short term. At least until Dean is old enough to be interested in cars and help restore one.
Until the next DeLorean (which I've determined will be an '83 two-toned automatic and have already started browsing for - just incase something pops up) I will be helping Brandon (Morpheus) on his project!

Derek,
Congrats on the new addition! Post a pic?
Talk about the circle of life..I'm getting a two-seater because I just gave my Saturn to my newly licensed 16yr old daughter, and I figured the timing was right to own a two-seater. I commute a lot to work and as handy is the minivan was with the kids, I needed something with a little more kick. I'm headed over to your blog with a cup of coffee to read up.
I will definitely be in touch and know that this car is going to a good home. Heated garage and lots of TLC. I feel pretty privileged to be an owner.

Hah I didn't realize you were in MO until you mentioned the heated garage! Down here the car was in an air conditioned garage. :)
Give me a shout here via PM or at dgrozio (at) gmail.com if you have any questions or want additional detail. There are some things I never got around to blogging about that were done to the car as well. I can provide you with a large list if you would like. I don't want to be that "Previous Owner" where you get to something and ask "WHAT IS THIS?!" :)

Congrats Derek on the new born - and probably a wise choice on changing hobbies. I bought a (non-D) project car just before my kids were born, thinking I'd have plenty of spare time. What a mistake that was.
And congrats "cybercusp"- that's a great car you have - I saw it at DCS and was very impressed.

WELCOME
Have you been in contact with anyone from the local St.Louis area Club? (Marty or Jake) If not I can PM you contact info.
Btw, What's your Name? It's always nice to know who we're chatting with. You can go into your personal settings and set up a signature if you like.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks! My name is Michael. A gentleman gave me Marty's name and number at the car show Sunday. I don't have Jake's info though so that would be great if you could PM with that. There's another individual that lives in my parents neighborhood that has a DeLorean (original owner all the way back to 1981) and stays active in the club. I got his info too. Thank you all for such a warm welcome!

Get ready for a lot of that. My DeLorean has stolen the attention off of both Murcio and Gallardo of the Lambos, Audi R8's, and numerous model Ferraris.
One night, I went to a restaurant called Tijuana Flats. In the parking lot was a 1984 Ferrari Testarossa with red exterior and tan interior. The owner and myself were outside talking when a early 80's Camaro pulled up - smoking out of the exhaust and all beat to heck. Two guys jumped out and swarmed the DeLorean; they were flipping out, taking pictures and asking questions galore. As they left they thanked me for my time, and I was like "I appreciate it guys; don't forget, there's a sweet Ferrari Testarossa right here too!" and - no joke - they turned to the owner and was like "yeah man nice Ferrari" as they walked away. Didn't even stop to look at it, shake the owner's hand - nothing. Just "Nice Ferrari." and left.
I was dumbstruck, but it sure made me smile inside. The smile came outside once I got out of eyesight of the Ferrari owner =P.

Michael, How have you found the people at DMC Florida? So far, they have been nothing but Perfection for me.
I'm asking, (Sorry guy's, my first post here), because I also bought a D from Tom there last week. VIN# 6599.
I'm also Anxiously waiting to pick it up soon. I'm having them add cruise, alarm/key less entry and the Stage 1 exhaust kit installed.
I'm Hoping that the xenon light upgrade is still in stock because I asked Tom, (If possible), to also add it to the car.
Sorry, I didn't mean to highjack your thread but, I'm like a kid at Christmas also.
Congrats!

Hi George,
So far so good with Florida. I've been working with Tom and I'm sure i'm bugging him like a kid in the backseat asking "Are we there yet??" I had them install the Wings A Loft system and the Xenon headlight package, as well as cruise, which I think they will finish up this week. Then final inspection and off to the races. Hopefully in my garage by the end of next week!
Let me know what you think of the Stage I. Since I'm using the car as a commuter I'm going to try the engine stock and see how the cabin sound level goes for the 2 hr commute!
Congrats on your purchase!
Hi Mike,
Good to meet you! I'm planning on being there saturday afternoon, although I'll probably be on my bike since I won't have the car until next week. Which means maybe we could plan a get together again soon?!

I'll let you know what I think of the Stage 1. (Although, I won't be able to compare it to the stock exhaust).
I Will be driving mine as often as I can. (I own 3 other vehicles so, their going to suffer Neglect for a bit)...
Last I spoke with Tom, (He's been nothing but Patient with me also), I should be able to pick mine up this coming Friday.
Just in time for the Holiday traffic for my trip home... LOL.

There was a 2 1/2 day delay because of the hurricane, but we're set for for pickup on Sept 4th and delivery on the 6th. Tom sent some pics of the car in service getting the fluid service completed and the inspection. Is it next week yet

I've decided I'm going to start today when i get home from work. The biggest job will be clearing out the damn garage and finding a place to stash everything. I'm going to use a Rustoleum epoxy I've heard generally good reviews of. Considering a clear coat too.

What are you going to do to treat the concrete first? You need to get all the oil and whatnot out of it before applying the epoxy, or it may crack and come up in those stained areas. I hear you can get it professionally steamed out but haven't really looked too much into that.

Michael, Based upon your post, I'm assuming that your having your car shipped to you?
Mine is still down there also, (because of Issac and a SNAFU with the Stage 1 exhaust kit), and I'll be renting a car for the trip down and drive my D back.
I figured, (For me), What better way to get "In Tune" with a new car then take it on a Road Trip...

The wiring harness is part of the cruise control option, from what Tom told me.
As far as the BMW R90S bike, it was something I inherited from my Dad. I haven't figured out if I'll keep it yet.
It's been sitting since 1984, and I used to be a Harley Davidson Snob/Owner.

Just got word that the car is back from having the fascia repainted..DMCF was wanting to make sure the fascia looked factory fresh. They attached some pics and I believe we're just about ready to ship. On the left of the engine bay you can see the controller for the cruise control. I ordered the labels from DMCCa (thanks Danny!) and a re-inforcement for the louvres per his recommendation.

I loved embracing the anticipation when I was in your shoes, (I flew down to FL and drove back to East TN.) I thought what the Hell, I'm letting myself be a kid and I'm going to let myself get excited like a 10year old on Christmas eve. My only regret is that I didn't record my journey or take time to stop and enjoy being in FL with a Delorean. I was so anxious about the 1000 mile journey in front of me I didn't even sidetrack 10 miles to see the ocean on the way back home.
I have a brochure my old boss gave me back in the mid 90's. I kept it all this time and every once in a while I opened it up and read it just dreaming of how cool it would be to own one of these cars. I even took it with me to FL to read that night. So savor this weekend, stay up late, watch Delorean videos and documentaries on youtube until you can't keep your eyes open. At least once the thought will pop in your head(before reality sets in) that one day maybe you will be lucky enough to buy one of these cars, then you can just stop, smile and think about Sunday.

That would be great. Let me know if you're in the area. I'd like to go up to DMCMW sometime, for sure for their open house and to check out the new facility. Crystal Lake is only about 4.5 hrs from me. And a friend of mine is an oral surgeon around that area and knows some good places to eat and have a drink.

Greatest feeling in the world to take delivery. Congratulations on your new car, and prepare for a rollercoaster of joy and maintenance. :)
And that first wash after initial transport is, for lack of a better word, magical. Mine was shipped to Georgia from the northwest US on open-transport and it was downright FILTHY when it arrived. One of the very first things I did on day 1 was give it a bath, and the clean and beautiful car that it was immediately came out to stay.
The photograph that is my avatar was the photo I took immediately after taking it home from the wash.

Sounds like classic fuel pickup hose collapsing due to overheating, but I would not expect it on a cool day like today. I doubt its the gauge or sending unit, most likely pickup hose, clogged screen, or fuel pump hot and/or going bad. I chased the same type of problem thinking the pickup hose was collapsing, turned out to be the pump itself. Replaced it last year and never had the problem again even in last summer's 100+ temps.
Although if the gauge is inoperative, I guess you could have just ran it out of gas!

If the needle is pointing at 12:00 that usually means the sender has failed. Easy enough fix! If your fuel system is in need of a once-over, you could get the full DMCH pump/sender combo kit.

So how much gas did you put in it to top it off? The tank holds a touch over 13 gallons, so if it didn't take more than 12 gallons it's possible you may have a split in your pickup hose.

Well, they are not going to send up a mechanic to fix it. I would call up Jake, he would be able to fix it or at least verify it is indeed a bad sender in about 10 minutes. The gauge pointing straight up means you've either lost ground, Open connection in the harness or the wire in the sender broke. I can't imagine the car would have left DMCF with the gauge needle straight up. Strange things can happen to these cars for no apparent reason. Perhaps the previous owner on this forum can verify if it has an OE sender or DMCH replacement.

It took 13 gallons on the fill up, so bone dry. Since adding gas it's ran without a hitch, so the earlier hiccup was apparently just running out of gas. I removed the old sender and examined it..I believe it's the original sender just by appearance. I checked the voltage at the three terminals on top of the sense and I verified I was getting voltage across the red and black wires. Jake said the third wire was for the low fuel light. I hope it's just a bad sender..is there a test for that? If its further up in the wire harness then that's not good. The Wings A Loft work well, cruise control is good, everything else is in business except the right turn signal light gives an erratic blink. Faulty relay?
They ship the car with very little gas and I'm wondering if that could have contributed to a sending unit failure.

Why wouldn't they have checked the fuel sender and fuel pump as this is a pretty common problem?

Chances are the with the tank empty and the car bouncing around, the old sender just failed, or it had a bad connection. It's just one of those things. I had a brand new sender fail in about 17 minutes.
Those senders are crap anyway.

Alright..DMCF is thinking bad sender as well, so but the NOS senders are on 30-day back order. However, I mentioned the new sending unit/fuel pump combo (thanks to reading these boards daily) and asked if I could do that instead. No problem! In fact, they support that it's a way better unit than the OEM sender. So that's the route I'm going to go. Yay! I get to perform my first fix on my D! Does that get me into the club??
Fast blink on the turn signal is apparently coming from a bad bulb. I'll have to check that when I get home. I was thinking relay but bad bulb makes more sense. Damn, a lot can go wrong during shipping

Normal. Most people only see it under 10 MPH, if it is dramatic at higher speeds you have something wrong in your angle drive system.

Michael, my speedometer worked great for the first 20 or so miles after I left DMCF. I Did compare it with my GPS and the speedo was always 1-2 mph lower.
Once I was on the Interstate, (I 75 N, just past Fort Myers), that's when mine started to 'Jiggle' some times.
Cruise was set for the speed limit, 70 MPH. It took a few miles before I recognized that when Cruise was acting up, so was the speedometer.

DMCF put the cruise buttons on my dash because my D still has the LED clock.

The dust cap can affect the speedo read out? What are the symptoms of a defective dust cap..I'll check mine. My speedo bounces until about 25mph then everything is fine.
So here's how it all works:
There a cable the runs from the back of your speedometer to the lamba counter box at the footwell. Then there's another cable then leaves the lamba counter box and goes to your angle drive. The angle drive has a flexible wire with a square end that goes through the middle of the wheel hub. At the end of that wire, the dust cap goes on, and it fits perfectly in the middle of the front wheel hub. As the wheel spins, the dust cap rotates with the wheel, causing RPMs to occur and the angle drive begins to operate. In turn, the speedometer in essence takes those RPMS produced by the angle drive and registers them as MPH.
If that dust cap's lil square hole gets worn out over time, the angle drive wire stops spinning, and your speedometer "dies." $15 dust cap and the peasants will rejoice.
Way you can know for sure, get your front wheel off and take the dust cap off. You'll see the lil wire sticking out - take a drill without a drill bit installed and gently lock the tip of your drill onto the wire- as if the angle drive wires was a drill bit. Then rev your drill pretty good and look at your speedometer. If it moves, bad dust cap.
The dust cap should not slide right into place with no issues. It is such a tight fit that you'll be able to get about 1/2 of it in, and then the other half you "work in" with some slight help from a flat head screwdriver. IF your dust cap slides right in and out with no problems and your speedometer works - it will - but it's on borrowed time.
Ask me how I know ;).

That seems like a really good idea, but I'm left wondering what would stop the brass tube from wearing away at the dust cap in place of the drive cable.

DMC5180
09-16-2012, 07:57 PM
Speedo quivering or twitching is pretty normal for the Delorean. It has more to do with the cable rotating in the jacket than the Dust cap. Typically dust cap failure (stripping out the square hole) is caused by down stream binding in the cable system. 95% of the time the Angle drive is going to fail soon. If your driving along and you suddenly get large movements 5mph or more of the Speedo needle followed by needle dropping to ZERO. Most of the time it means the AD just failed.

24.6 mpg. (This was on my trip back from DMC Florida). Based upon my driving since then, I'm *Guessing*, around 16 in town.

George- Infinity can be touchy on sound for sure. I have the Kappa series which I installed Friday night and they sound very good. I'm going to add Alpine's mini-amp Model KTP-445U (45Watts peak power X 4 and a class D amp) to add a little boost to all 4 speakers, and then hopefully getting the DMCCa sub this week. I spoke with Danny out in California and I believe after our conversation that they're going away from the MTX speaker back to the JL.
As for the fuel sender, still waiting. Tom has been working hard on it and following through to make sure it's sent.
