Hi all,

Currently putting my engine back together, with brand new parts and freshly painted parts!

I wanted to know, since I removed the entire stock exhaust system, once I get the car running, can I drive around without an exhaust system on?? Would there be any problems, till I find a new exhaust system???

The Lambda sensor won't be connected, so maybe an idle trouble will occur?

I also plan on driving it about an hour or more away to PJ Grady, so he can do some work on it and check it out! It will be just temporary!

I doubt it will be street legal without an exhaust system on it. Not to mention the lack of back pressure might have an undesirable effect.

It will also be quite loud and likely sound like a lawnmower.

You'll have headers on it at least right?

How about other technical aspects of not having an exhaust system?
Besides the missing Lambda control as mentioned in another reply?
There's no pressure as is supposed to be coming from an exhaust system?

How about that hot exhaust directed to components and the fiberglass on the sides.

It's definitely not legal in NY state to drive around with no exhaust. My wife was pulled over years ago for exactly this; but got off because it was in the back seat having only fallen off minutes before. Road salt's a bitch.

Long story short, it's not a good idea especially if you're going to be doing a long trip. Too risky to the car and your license.

Despite the legalities, it would be a really unpleasant experience.

I had a catalytic convertor stolen off a pickup truck last year and I replaced it in the office parking lot (you may remember my old thread). I couldn't get the flange on one side tight so I elected to drive it home with about a 1" opening between flanges, just on one side, and it was unbearable noisy, rebounding off brick walls etc. having that, 12" behind your head would be torture

^^ This.

As for the noise, it will be embarrassing loud.

Hi, 1batt4u , I live in Baldwin which is between you in queens and Grady in sayville, what day are you planning on making the drive? If its tuesday(tomorrow) or Wednesday, I'd love for you to stop by and we could talk delorean and I could show you my D and the progress im making on it. I'll be home because I'm off for the summer, but I won't be around after Wednesday, we could always get together another time, I could come to you no problem.

Let me know your thoughts
I'm in Baldwin ny 11510 just south of 27 (sunrise hwy)

Thanks

So you got your answers and it sounds like you'll find a way NOT to run the engine without the exhaust manifolds on it. Good that you asked.

For those who are curious about why Dave told us the exhaust valves need the manifold - the best reason not to go manifold-free:
