View Full Version : Engine Water Pump Interchangeability

So I just bought a DeLorean. Most everything looks ok, except the engine bay needs cleaning. While I am taking things apart my eye catches the water pump. I'll be damned if the thing looks like it might be the original! I figured I might as well replace it now before it fails out on the road somewhere. Question of the day: Can I use a 1983 Volvo 760 water pump, it's avaliable locally and for a low price, or should I spend more for a DMCH or SpecialtAuto pump? Also are there modifications to the pulley or anything else I would have to be aware of with the Volvo pump? Thanks for any input

You can pick up a water pump locally and use a crossover vehicle, not sure if the one you mentioned will work. I'm currently using a crossover water pump, along with other parts.

Use this to help guide you in the right direction

Oh and btw, yes it would be a good idea to replace the water pump and the hoses while your in there.

Thanks DeLoumis.

My line of reasoning is that the 1982-3 760 uses the 2.85 PRV engine so a lot of parts must be very similar if not identical. I found at a local scrap yard an '83 760 that is mechanically sound but was rear-ended so a lot of goodies are there for the taking. I think I'll take the pump and some other bits just because they are there on the cheap.

If it still has the Volvo ignition distributor, get hold of it.
It can be used on a D!

If I were you, I'd take that whole engine....you can probably part it out and make a decent chunk of change, or use it.

Depending on the water pump you currently have, you might need a new pulley!

Do not use the 760 pump, it is actually smaller than the delorean pump. Use the pump from a Volvo 1980 264 GLE. Look at the difference in the two pictures:

12710
Volvo 760 (Pay attention to the gasket, it's not the same)

Here's the DeLorean/264 gasket for comparison

As tempting as it may be, it NEVER pays to reuse a used water pump. Even it it does fit. As for the motor, the PRV is so rugged and reliable that unless you broke something or overheated it, there is little you really need. If you can get the motor your best option is to sell it as a lump or part it out and sell the pieces.

Whew!! I decided to grab the ignition distributor and wires and leave the rest. Some Volvo owner should have that stuff to fix their car, I really shouldn't hoard any more car stuff :) Thanks for the info about the pump not being the correct size, you saved me a lot of aggravation!!

I agree with Dave on the water pump. Don't waste your time with a used one.

On another note, I wouldn't waste your time with used spark plug wires either. Get a new set at Autozone if you want to be cheap or call Hervey (SpecialT) and get a $100 set of MSD wires if you want to do it right.

Or somewhere in the middle with dmcmw wires for $85. Guaranteed to have the correct plug end boots.

What sort of wires are they selling for $85? Generally DMCMW is da bomb diggity so I'm curious what they are selling. Are they 8mm? Do they have real copper wire in them?

They are OE replacement made in France Bougicord new-new-stock. Should be exactly like OEM.

Don't get the spark plug wire for the Volvo 265. They look like they will work, but there are 2 wires that are shorter then the ones on the D. I got to the last 2 wires and found that out.

Don't new volvo waterpumps come without the 4-bolt-on pulley? I thought I saw someone selling them once for around $75.

If it's still there, I would try to get the pulley. It's been on my pick list for awhile. The local yards near me are mostly cars in the 90s-present, and have a high turnover rate. After a car is picked over for a few months, it goes to the crusher, and sold for scrap.

That is correct, the new pumps don't have pulleys, but you can get an aluminum bolt on pulley from John Hervey. That's the only way to go in my opinion. Press on pulleys can be questionable. Besides, you can reuse the bolt on pulley.
