I just bought the sticky pad from DMCH to remount my rear view mirror that fell off. It had been glued on (I want to say I used modern day glue sold for that purpose, but I don't remember if it was epoxy or gorilla maybe...) In any case, it lasted about 5 years and then fell off. None of the horror stories of cracked windshields thank goodness, but I can't say I understand how that could happen. If it is a thermal expansion thing, how can such a small square make a difference? Oh well, moot point now.
On my windshield I have a black square where it mounts. Not thick like the pad, thin like a decal. Does this stay or should it be scraped off (assuming it's not part of the windshield) before mounting with the DMCH pad?
Thanks.

Yes, leave the Black patch alone. Do not remove it. Clean the Black surface very well with alcohol (not Jack Daniels j/k) the isopropyl kind or denatured. Dry very well before the alcohol has time to evaporate. You do not want alcohol residue left behind before sticking the Double Sided Sticky Pad in place.
Use alcohol to also clean the painted Black Mirror square and dry well before sticking the Pad to the Mirror.
Just in case others have not seen my thread.

The pad helps spread out the pressure evenly. If you use glue, you risk extra pressure being placed on an even smaller portion of the glass.
Like the other guy said, leave the black pad on the windshield mount but make sure it is super clean. I think I used a razor blade and a little water to clean mine. If the houston pad doesn't work out for you let me know. I have three or four spare pads sitting in my glove box. If you or anyone else wants a free one just PM me with an address to ship to.
