Since 4915 is being fitted with a Spec II engine from DPI my interest in a 'pre-start oil pump' has been piqued. It just makes sense to me to have the internals of an engine lubricated before starting, especially the cams and valve train. They are inexpensive and the ones I've seen simply tie into the oiling system with an adapter under the oil filter. Anyone have one or have an opinion on this?

Jack, I sent over our pre oil system kit via email a few days ago. You must not have gotten it! It is the same system we use to scavenge our turbo systems. I will resend when I am back in the office shortly.

It can be a great idea but IMHO it is overkill. Use a good oil and change it often. It can't hurt adding it but it does add another system and it's inherent complexity and possibility of leaks. Eventually all of them will leak down if left to stand long enough. The best ones use an external pump and timers so the pump can build oil pressure before you can attempt to start the motor. Studies have shown most of the wear occurs during dry start-up so it makes sense to consider a pre-oiler. If you are really serious about wear you should worry about the cams. I would try to find a roller lifter. On the PRV it is probably overkill.

I normally mill 3 fittings into each valve cover and throw oil at three locations on the camshafts. Set on a primer switch that only runs manually prior to starting for 3 seconds with a pressure switch rigged to a LED on the dash indicating pressure achieved and the nod to let off the primer switch.

I keep thinking about David T's comment ... maybe it is overkill on a PRV.
