Generally speaking, how difficult is it to find a spare wheel and tire? I looked on DMCH but didn't see any available in inventory. I assume this is a NOS part and no repros are being made? I've perused through the parts classifieds on this forum before but haven't noticed any for sale. Figured its one of those parts that only comes available when a car is sadly being parted out.

At any rate, my car is missing this and I'd like to find one at some point. Just curious what kind of uphill battle I might be facing (like the digital clocks perhaps?).

The OEM one is DeLorean specific and occasionally come up for sale for around $100 iirc(plus cost for a new tire)

If you just want a spare wheel, you can get a generic space saver at the wreckers yard with the correct bolt pattern.

Call DMCH directly or DMCCA I know Don Steger has an extensive bone yard of parts cars. Most likely they all came to his shop with spare tires.

The hard part now seems to be finding the actual tire "new" (i.e. new rubber and not from a boneyard). Apparently in modern cars, if you wear out the space-saver spare they sell you the whole wheel and tire as an assembly. I was looking for one a while ago and while several tire stores (Discount etc.) showed the tire as available, it was not when they really ordered it!

I have been looking for a new tire for the spare as well. 2 years ago I went to someone I know from a tire shop and asked him to realy make a good effort into finding a spare tire new.
He called me the next day and he found one. It comes from the Chevrolet Lunima. The tire was fresh and feels and smells like a new rubber tire. Problem solved for a few years. Paid 90€ for it. I check the pressure 2 times per year and it is still perfect.

My friend Benny was going to Italy on holiday being worried about this spare 2 weeks after I got mine. We traded the wheel and he gave me 90€ and I managed to get a new one. (made the deal that in case I could not get one anymore I wanted my spare back, he understood of course.)

I honestly painted my VIN nr on the tire, you never know...
So ask for the spare from the chevy Lumina. I have no idea which year model I got.

If you don't care about brand, the spare tire for a GM Chevy Lumina (aka Pontiac Transport/Oldsmobile Silhouette etc) has about the same size: T125/70R15 (ours is T125/70D15)

What's the "D" stand for in T125/70D15? Is it synonamous with "R" as in R15?

Thanks for the replies guys. Good info from fellow members as always.

In a normal tire the R means Radial. D means "diagonal" as opposed to radial or bias ply.

Give Rob Grady a call at PJ Grady. He has NOS Spare Tires in stock.

As for an actual 'new' rubber tire, I went to a junk yard and found one from mid-2000 that I had installed on the rim.

I would not use a 30 year old spare, regardless if it's NOS. I got my spare from a salvage yard for $13, then had it mounted for $20: http://www.16908.info/?p=1136

The spare is now 9 years old, which probably utilizes advances in tire technology that the 30-year-old ones don't. However I discovered recently it isn't holding air. I remember on the old .com someone recommended a bead sealer.

I was told a 6 year old tire, driven or not may be considered an old tire is is a harzard.
For a spare never seeing sunlight, I'd say 10 years at the most.
A NOS I would never consider either.

I understand having a spare tire if you are into 'concours', but otherwise . . . . I have driven over 100,000 miles in the past few years without a spare. Some 30,000 miles of that was in 16867 and 65,000 was in our 2006 Crossfire . . . .a car that never came with a spare. Between Slime and AAA, spares seem pretty archaic!

30 y.o. spare tire is a lot better than no spare tire at all. It can at least get you out of a dangerous situation, as long as you keep in mind that you are using an old tire.

For concours car you not just need a spare tire, but you need the correct tire.

I might understand driving one car with no spare, but two cars and for so long? c'mon, you are just pushing your luck.

I'd argue that one. I had a customer use a DMC spare on the front, when it failed after a couple of miles with the car on a tow dolly it tore up the spoiler, right front fender, and body tub. He was really wishing that he'd just had it towed. . . .

Although I uderstand your point if moving the car was limited getting off the road to the next corner.

Steve Rice and Bill Robertson have replaced their OEM style donut spares with brand new full size 50,000 mile steel belted radial tires on 15 inch rims that fit both front and rear, and fit in the OEM spare tire well when not in use:

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/s720x720/523082_365319040180019_57217017_n.jpg

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/523082_365319066846683_1631460267_n.jpg

Both Steve Rice and Bill Robertson have test driven their brand new full size 50,000 mile steel belted radial tires on 15 inch rims front and rear with no noticeable effect on handling or performance.

Both Steve Rice and Bill Robertson are confident that if necessary they could drive all the way home, at highway speeds, from a distant location, on their brand new full size 50,000 mile steel belted radial tires on 15 inch rims.

In 2009 Bill Robertson did indeed drive all over the Washington DC area, at speeds up to 50 MPH, on his brand new full size 50,000 mile steel belted radial tire on a 15 inch rim looking for a replacement rear tire when jagged concrete split his sidewall.

Some owners claim that spare tires are not necessary if you have AAA. Both Steve Rice and Bill Robertson disagree with that philosophy for the following reasons:
- AAA will only tow you to one tire store, not multiple tire stores looking for an in stock DeLorean size tire
- AAA will leave you stranded at a closed tire store after hours or on the weekend

Both Steve Rice and Bill Robertson regularly travel long distances in the middle of the night in their DeLoreans. Both Steve Rice and Bill Robertson think that it is prudent to have the most usable spare tire possible in case of tire failure in those circumstances.

Your mileage may vary.

I just called Tire Rack, and they definitely have and regularly stock Kumho T125/70 D15 tires. They are $52 plus applicable shipping to your location. They are not listed on their website but the guy I talked to said they are in stock at all their warehouses and it is not an item they are in danger of running out of or not carrying.

I will probably order one for peace of mind. So if you have a stock wheel or can find a boneyard one, this is a good option for getting the rubber up to par.

Looks like Sears does too, but much more expensive. http://www.sears.com/bridgestone-temp-spare-tire-125-70r15-95t-bw/p-09581499000P For a spare, I don't think D vs. R is important, is it? I just finished painting my front fascia and "while I was in there" did a touch up job on the trunk. Took the spare out and despite the fact that it looks unused, it leaks around the bead. I may just go ahead and order on of those Tire Rack tires.

I had the Kumho I mentioned earlier mounted up early last week. Haven't driven on it yet (thankfully) but the fit was of course perfect. Props to Tire Rack for having the right thing at a great price, and the overnight delivery at ground shipping prices was no small benefit either. I wasn't in dire need of this tire, but if I was I'd sure appreciate that speed. Also a shout out to America's Tire, who removed the old one and mounted/balanced this one for $16 in under 10 minutes. That place is great, not sure if everyone has had the same experience but I really like the one in my town.

I comprehend having a belly fat if you are into 'concours', but otherwise.I have motivated over 11,000 distance in modern times without a extra. Some 30000 distance of that was in 16000 and 65,000 was in our 2007 Crossfire. A car that never came with a extra. Between Slime and spare parts seem fairly archaic.

My lawn mower has done less than 11,000 miles in its life, yet it has somehow managed to get a flat tire.

Anyone who does serious driving in their car is nuts not to carry a spare. Tomorrow I plan to depart for an 800 mile trip to Lexington, NC. I plan to fill my car to the brim with 2 liter bottles of Diet Cheerwine before I leave North Carolina. I would be nuts not to carry a full size spare.

My lawn mower has done less than 11,000 miles in its life, yet it has somehow managed to get a flat tire.Even if no foreign objects were involved, that's still pretty respectable for a lawn mower tire. The original NCT's our D's came with seemed to last 5K-10K miles (personal experience, anyways), and lawn mowers go over much rougher terrain (tree roots, rocks, etc.).

A lawn mower spare tire... now that's an interesting idea!

And for what it's worth, I have yet to have a flat tire while driving any of my cars, but I'll be damned if I'm going to travel without a spare, even with AAA one phone call away. Not everywhere has cell phone reception, and it may very well be in one of those areas where you need a spare. I'll be chasing this Kumho lead, I certainly need new rubber after 30 years of aging and zero use.

Mine arrived within 1 full day too. They said they ship to Houston from Shreveport LA.

My prior spare had the date code 023R. So it is probably 1993, but could be 1983. If it were 2003 it would have been 0203. Whether '83 or '93, it was too old to depend on. It was only when I placed the new one beside the prior one that the crappy condition of the prior one really stood out.

Ordered mine from Tire Rack and had the tire 24hrs. later. $68 with shipping to GA. Interestingly, I had Discount Tire mount the spare and they said they now carry the tire and it is $60 + 7% tax. So it is just a tad cheaper than Tire Rack after shipping costs. They said they just started stocking this tire last week.

Thanks for the tip. Just went to my local Discount Tire and purchased the correct size Kumho tire for exactly $60 + tax. I asked why these odd-sized tires are now in stock and was told that brand new DOT regs are pushing local tire retailers to stock more of the emergency tires.

I discovered another source of spare tires recently: The Nissan Versa (perhaps other Nissans) has a T125/70 D15 spare tire, exactly the size of our spares, from 2007 up to and including the current model year (2013). If anyone is concerned with age of the tire like I am, it might be worthwhile to track down one of these spares from a dealership. Obviously someone is still making this tire size for it to end up in a brand new car, so perhaps someone could go one step further and figure out which manufacturer is producing their spares, and obtain one directly from them. I have not yet obtained one of these spare tires, but it may fit without swapping the rims (even if it's on backwards), although I would definitely try front and back first before reaching that conclusion as the sizes are different. The Versa has four lug nuts per wheel, so it just might work.

Now is this a tire problem or is it the rim that is bad?If you're still running the original 30-year-old spare (and it sounds like you are), I can pretty much guarantee it's the age of the tire at fault. Dry rotting seems to be a much bigger issue on spares than the rest of the tires, so running the original tires may be fine, but the spare most definitely should be replaced with new rubber. Even without the air issues, I have heard story after story of guys using the original spares and having them blow out after a few miles (if that) and causing quite a bit of damage. Better play it safe than sorry.

Driving around on very old tires is like playing Russian roulette.
You'll never know when it hits you.

My 30 year old spare has been sealed while I visited DMCH.
I use it mainly for weigth, won't use it in an emergency.
Better use some road service, like AAA, to have your tire repaired (takes only time, causes no danger if you're in a safe spot).

And yes, if I'm to replace the spare tire, I'll use the "R" version, not the diagonal.

Shep

Found the part number for that Nissan spare tire, in case anyone's looking: 40300-EN17A . I can't seem to find any size directly listed with that part number, but I did come across where it's listed as the spare for the Versa, and another place that stated the Versa's spare tire size is a match to ours, so I'm 95% positive the tire will work.

Better use some road service, like AAA, to have your tire repaired (takes only time, causes no danger if you're in a safe spot). The only problem with this approach is what happens if the tire cannot be repaired. Say for example a nail tears your sidewall. Then you'll have to use your 30-year-old spare to get it on a flatbed rather than being able to drive on the spare and wait until later to get the tire replaced. Of course, spares are seeing less and less use anyways, so perhaps this is nothing to worry about, but this is still something to consider.

I called Tire Rack and the guy said they don't have anything that size. So I hung up, called back and asked again, no problem with the second person lol. It was $49 + 10 shipping. But shipping will take a while b/c of Thanksgiving.

Then I called Discount Tire, and they have it in stock, but it's $60. So I'll be driving to Discount Tire on Friday to get it there, for conveniences sake. I have two other tires from other vehicles with slow leaks they will take care of for free at the same time as mounting the spare for $10.

I'm willing to pay a few bucks extra to just get it done on a day off of work instead of waiting until next week and having to do it after work and not getting home until late. Plus I don't want to leave my trunk full of tires for a week.

Thanks!~If you're looking for the stock wheel the spare tire resides on without the tire itself, call up some of the vendors. Generally they won't sell you the tire as they're 30 years old and last about two feet before going flat themselves, but I believe some of them have wheels they've sold upon request.

Four-lug wheels aren't exactly common unfortunately, but most of the ones I've seen are on smaller cars (coupes, sedans, two-seaters, etc.), if that helps any. I haven't ever seen less than five lugs on an SUV or a pickup truck.

Thanks for the info. I do not see why that would not work. I wonder if the Laser/Daytona used a smaller wheel for the spare. It is entirely possible it had a smaller steel rim that did not look so modern. Do you suppose MANY cars with a four-bolt pattern were typically 100MM X 4?

4 x 100 is extremely popular, unless you're in a part of the world where the Honda Civic does not exist. And since the aftermarket wheel industry is practically designed around the Civic, wheel choices are essentially endless. The only thing you have to watch out for is the size of the hub. The stupid aftermarket wheels that came with my car have a center hub that is much too large, so the rims don't actually clamp down on the dust cap, so I have no speedo because of the wheels.

So inversely, DeLorean rims should fit on my Civic..... 8)

Yeah, not exactly uncommon. The only thing to watch out for would be the offset. Not that big a deal I guess if you're just using it for a spare, but definitely something to keep in mind if you're looking to change up the stock rims.

You can put DeLorean wheels on a Honda (but I wouldn't drive it much, the center hole is larger and it really is supposed to be a good fit). You can't put Honda wheels on a DeLorean unless you somehow make the center hold bigger.

Somewhere around here I have a photo of my DeLorean wheels on my (former) 94 Integra. Unfortunately it is filed with about 5000 other digital photos.

Did any of those other 4x100 cars come with a full-sized spare tire? I'd gladly take a plain steel wheel as a spare instead of that swiss cheese thing.

I would have thought there was a cheapie version of that Daytona / some other K-Car derivative - that used steel wheels on the ground. Problem is most of those cars were junked years ago. Not soon enough actually.

I'd love to see that..lol I looked at my car and it has 5 holes.. :(

The center hole does vary, so it depends on the year. I tried to swap rims on 2 of my civics (can't recall which ones), and it wouldn't work. Bolt pattern is the easy part. Center hole and offset are a little more tricky.

Maybe, but my '98 Chrysler came with a full-sized steel wheel spare. I thought if Chrysler was including full-sized spares as late as 1998, they probably did it in the 80s. (My '06 Chrysler has a donut spare.)

How is the mat fitment with that in place? I'm thinking of doing that myself so I can drive more than 50 MPH if I ever get a flat.

That is the only issue with this wheel, is that it sits higher than the compact spare. I've got a luggage rack, so I've put that over the wheel, and then placed the trunk carpet over the rack. Oh, and the tire size is a 195/50-R15

I really don't like the look of those things either. However, I just searched Tire Rack for rims for a 1984 Chrysler Laser, and they have quite a few [link (www.tirerack.com/wheels/results.jsp?autoMake=Chrysler&autoModel=Laser&autoYear=1984)]. Looks like the same ones are listed for the 1984 Dodge Daytona [link (http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results.jsp?autoMake=Dodge&autoModel=Daytona&autoYear=1984&autoModClar=)]. That Rial Zamora looks fairly close to the design our stock rims:

Minus a lot more metal, of course. Does anyone know what the offset should be in millimeters? Those are 40mm.

I'd love to see that..lol I looked at my car and it has 5 holes.. :(While not quite the same thing, here's (http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5192223) a link to a thread with a bunch of pictures of them on a VW GTI. Doesn't look too bad actually.

I would have thought there was a cheapie version of that Daytona / some other K-Car derivative - that used steel wheels on the ground. Problem is most of those cars were junked years ago. Not soon enough actually.

Why the hate for the Daytona and K-cars?

Personally, I'm a big fan and actually like the salt shaker / swiss cheese / moon crater aluminum wheels that some are using as full size spares.
