I am the worse person when it comes so fixing cars. I need to replace my angle drive because my speedometer went out. If I order the part from DMCH I would want it done right. I don't want to drive 2 hours south to DMCFL and put a lot of miles on my car plus they charge a lot of money so does anyone know of a mechanic in Orlando or Tamp that can help me

Replacing the angle drive is one of the easier tasks to do. I just did it a few months ago without ever having done it before. Took slightly less than an hour from start to finish.
Do it yourself.
(This thread is also not in any way a how-to guide so I'm moving it out of this subforum. No idea why it ended up here to begin with.)

You have SO many DeLorean owners in that area. If someone doesn't help you and you're shy of doing it yourself, shame on DCF (DeLorean Club of Florida).
Seriously though, the angle drive is definitely a DIY job. You don't need to pay any mechanic to do this. The worst thing you may have coming is getting the big ol' hex nut off of the back of the old angle drive - I want to say it's at least a 13/16". Other than that- especially if you order a unit already put together for you (I did), it is a very good learning experience!
Just trying to encourage you - you can definitely do this job.

The axle nut is 32mm and the angle drive nut assembly is 1 1/4".

Also this. If you're going to be a DeLorean owner then you've got to quickly get OUT of the habit of running to a mechanic every time something needs to be fixed. I knew exactly DICK about cars when I bought my DeLorean, and couldn't fix anything on a car worth a shit. Very literally, the only things I knew were:
- How to change a tire
- How to change oil (though I'd never done it before)
- The conceptual operation of an internal combustion engine
Ever since buying my DeLorean I've made it a point to fix as much shit myself as possible, and teach myself how to do it along the way. I've learned a lot AND saved a shitload of money.

I'm renting a trailer from UHaul next week and heading to DMCFL in Bonita Springs with the Delorean in tow.

Yo, I didn't ask all that. Whatever you do with your car that's all you bro. All I am asking for is if anyone knows a mechanic in Tampa or Orlando if you dont know anyone or cant tell me how to fix it then I am not interested in what you do with your car. Also about what thread I post on I am not that petty dawg.
for real I'm good.

It's a half hour job. Takes almost as long as posting about considering renting a U-Haul to drive two hours to have someone do it for you.

Jeez guys!
I am not saying this because we run a service center and I know you all know how supportive Dave and I are of the DIY community, but it seems as if Damian has pretty clearly stated upfront that he doesn't want to or doesn't have the desire to do this work himself.
Maybe you are trying to encourage him, but it seems more like trying to guilt him into it. If you have an answer to his question, please share it with him. If not, please don't make him feel like a second class citizen on this forum.
Let's keep this a great resource for all levels of owners.
Respectfully offered 2 cents,
Chris Burns

Damian was just asking a simple question. He can't work on his car right now, because he is in Afganistan serving our military.

Back when I let mechanics do all my work for me, I paid over $600 to have a fuel pump changed on my daily driving 1994 Nissan XE Truck (back in 2005 when labor rates at shops were around $60/hour) - hardly an in-depth repair. On the DeLorean DIYself, it cost me $150, the cost of the pump.
My thoughts on it is knowledge is power, and I was unaware he was overseas. I </3 seeing people sending their cars hundreds of miles for something like changing a set of spark plugs. Yes, there are vendors to support, Lord knows I did it there last month.
If people want to pay for others to work on their cars, that's fine - their car, their choice. I just don't want to see someone BARELY be able to afford keeping their car when, with a little walk down the road of knowledge and a little time and patience, they can take control of a situation, fix their own car, gain some self-confidence, and get some knowledge under their belt.

You have SO many DeLorean owners in that area. If someone doesn't help you and you're shy of doing it yourself, shame on DCF (DeLorean Club of Florida).
Those are pretty strong words coming from someone who never found the time to make it to any of our past events and help out other club members, Jeremiah.
Really, shame on DCF?
The man asked for a good mechanic in our neck of the woods. He didn't ask for someone to help him perform the work himself. When someone asks me about a good mechanic for a DeLorean around town, I send them to DMCFL. I am simply not willing to put my stamp of approval on any mechanic's shop that I haven't used myself. Tony and Co. have always been good to me, and I will always recommend their DMC services for that reason. Sure, sadeeky might end up paying a little more by taking it there rather than do the work himself, but I'm sure he will pay around the same amount for some other random shop to do the work. For me, the meager price difference is not worth the peace of mind.
Now, if sadeeky had asked for someone local willing to help him do this job, I'm sure someone nearby would have volunteered if:
a) They check the forum often enough to see his request.
b) They were mechanically confident that they could help.
c) They had the available time to do so.
Don't sit up there on your pedestal in Ohio and shake your finger at our club for not offering sadeeky any help. We don't have a manned 1-800 number for people to call, but we do have a core group of guys who are most times willing and able to help an owner in need.

I was in the exact tame boat. I needed to replace my angle drive. I also had a few other issues, so I shipped my D from Sanford over to Bonita for DMCFL. Although Tampa's mileage to Bonita is far less, who's to say what you feel is too much or too little mileage. I would assume if you ship it(maybe try Shipping Wars and get on TV!) it would real cheap. When it comes to DMCFL, their prices are what they are, but they stand behind their work. I had them replace my angle drive about four years ago and its still going strong. That to me was worth their rate. When I went with them, they also set up the shipping.

See, this is why the internet sucks. Something can be taken SO many different ways, and unfortunately - quite often on the internet - things get taken in the wrong tone.
The "shame on DCF" comment was not meant as a condescending remark. There are a good number of owners in the Orlando area, and the DMC community is meant to be there to pull together and help each other. I loathe a community that claims to act as one and come together, but then it never happens. I have seen DCF work as a unit a great number of times, and my point of view based on his original post was that it would sure suck for him to take his car to a shop or a vendor with so many owners around him.
Brandon, you and I have never really gotten along - I get it. When it comes to how I have helped other DeLorean owners in Florida - the ones I helped were not part of the online community, so telling me I don't help other Florida owners really is quite inaccurate. The whole story wasn't known there.
See, a fact that needs to be remembered is that Pensacola is/was 8 hours away from Orlando. I was an electrical engineer student at the time - and that story is two-fold. Part of it was I was an EE student while working at O'Charleys, and the other part was from 2009 on I was an EE student going to school through the AF's sponsorship. If I failed one class (read: grade C-), I was not going to Officer's Training School; I was going to Basic Military Training - and on top of that - my electrical engineer degree would be frozen; I would not get to finish my degree until 4 years after serving with the AF as an airman - a far cry from the original plan of getting my BSEE degree and being an officer.
I know - Ben and Jamie made it - so I have no excuse not to have made the drive myself. Well, there's my reasons in the previous paragraph, and I'm just being honest - completing my education and graduating Officer Training School was far more important than any DeLorean related event.
Funny thing, Brandon, the whole "wagging your finger at the club" bit - I actually defended DCF against some Ohio members up here. Even though I had no membership down there, hung out with the Florida panhandle members, and never made the drive to Orlando, I still stuck up for DCF when I heard them getting bad-mouthed by some owners in this area. I know you didn't know that, but just letting you know more of the story.
As for how I help other owners, well, DCO and I are getting along just great, and instead of 8 hours driving I only have to do 1 hour of driving - so to say the least - I do have a tendency to help other owners with not having to literally jump timezones just to get from one city to another.
Bottom line, I'm not going to get personal with you about this. I'm sorry I lived 10 miles from the Florida/Alabama border and "everything was on the line" for me with my education and me getting into OTS that I couldn't make the drive down that way. Let it be known that I do think DCF is a solid club; I just hated to see him pay money to get a job done that I know the vast majority of DeLorean owners can do in DCF.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. If you want to discuss this more in-depth, please PM me.

Thanks for getting my back buddy. I am in Afghanistan and my wife wants to drive my car but she can't because of the speedometer problem. She really don't want to drive to DMCFL but I get home in Dec so I am probably going to send it there.
Thanks bro

I recall a shop in Orlando somewhere that used to have a few older Porsche's outside, and the guy had a D that he was getting running again. I know he does work on the cars, and if I can find his card again (it's been a few years since I last saw it), I will surely pass it along to you.

See, this is why the internet sucks. Something can be taken SO many different ways, and unfortunately - quite often on the internet - things get taken in the wrong tone.
The "shame on DCF" comment was not meant as a condescending remark.
Then perhaps you should have worded it differently. Look at your words objectively, and tell me that anyone reading it wouldn't have taken it any other way. How about, "I know there are a lot of DMC owners/enthusiasts in your area, I'm sure someone will chime in soon to help you out."
True, the club is there to pull together and help each other out, but I can't force any individual to participate in events or to offer tech support or do anything that they don't want to do. Bottom line, it's his choice to not do the work himself; if he wants to pay a shop to do the work, I'd rather recommend a DMC mechanic than anyone else.
Brandon, you and I have never really gotten along - I get it.
I don't.
I've never had any problem with you. Sure, we have had some interesting online discussions in the past about things, but I don't call that "not getting along". If I ever meet you in person, I wouldn't hesitate to say hi and shake your hand and shoot the shit about whatever.
When it comes to how I have helped other DeLorean owners in Florida - the ones I helped were not part of the online community, so telling me I don't help other Florida owners really is quite inaccurate. The whole story wasn't known there.
Methinks you were reading a bit too much into my comment, but ok. I didn't say you don't ever or haven't ever helped out other Florida owners, and you know it. You post very helpful information for people here, and should be applauded for doing so.
See, a fact that needs to be remembered is that Pensacola is/was 8 hours away from Orlando... etc, etc.
Not really relevant to the topic at hand, doesn't need to be re-hashed here.
If someone in Ohio has or had a problem with either DCF or me, they are welcome to contact me and air their grievance in a civilized manner. Or don't. Doesn't matter to me either way. So, thanks for that?
As for how I help other owners, well, DCO and I are getting along just great, and instead of 8 hours driving I only have to do 1 hour of driving - so to say the least - I do have a tendency to help other owners with not having to literally jump timezones just to get from one city to another.
Thanks for clearing that up. So long as the help-ee is within a 1 hour drive, you're willing to be the help-er. That's very nice of you. It's such a shame there aren't more helpful people like yourself in this community. (See what I did there?)
Bottom line, I'm not going to get personal with you about this. I'm sorry I lived 10 miles from the Florida/Alabama border and "everything was on the line" for me with my education and me getting into OTS that I couldn't make the drive down that way. You already did, but that's ok. Don't apologize for where you lived or the circumstances that prevented you from participating. I get why you couldn't make it. It's ok. I don't think any less of you for staying committed to your education and career goals, in fact you should be commended.
My bottom line: Think about what you type and how it can be interpreted by those who read it, especially when referring to a large group of people. I might not be able to guarantee large-scale participation in DCF events, but I sure as hell won't stand by and let my club get called out wether it was intentional or not. :cool1:
