I would like to replace my stock front shocks, they are old and are starting to create a rough ride.
I would like to keep the stock look and do not want to lower the front end. Has anyone ever bought replacement shocks at AutoZone or similar shop? If so do you have the part numbers?
Shocks - Front Girling: 70056602B-0C08, Monroe Matic-Plus: 32150 (requires space washers to fit) .
From parts cross over list here (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?932-Parts-Crossover-List&p=10040&viewfull=1#post10040).

Is Girling the brand name for the first ones? Do they fit without a space washer?
If I go with the Monroe Matic-Plus, where do I get the space washers and what size/how many?

Girling is the original brand name, but the NOS front shocks are no longer available anywhere as far as I know. Even Josh at DPI has said he'd love to find some, and he's usually the guy who says "Oh yeah, I've got some of <x> hiding out in my shop..."

Sorry, I am confused. What shocks do I get at Autozone?

My apologies, I didn't mean to confuse. Was just saying that you will *not* find the original Girlings at Autozone or anywhere else.

Ok, so I go in and ask for two: Monroe Matic-Plus: 32150 ?
Will they know the spacers that are needed?

They probably won't know that, no. If you search around on the forum here you will find plenty of threads on front shocks. I think there were even pics of the spacers some folks made.

Not answering directly, only to say that AutoZone's online catalog shows no Monroe shocks, only other brands. You can check with your local shop to be sure. Or look for a suspension/repair shop that deals Monroes. No clue about the spacers.
Secondary approach is to call one of the D parts vendors and get a front pair from them. The D's front shocks have little to do with front ride height. The front springs control that. This option means you'll get the spacers you need. And maintain the ride height. If you liked the way the front Girlings rode when good then ask them for the closest match to that.
If you have other transportation, take the old parts with you, and when you compare, it should be obvious what is needed.
I think you should read this thread (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?4306-help-needed-for-monroe-shock-install) before making a decision on taking this route...particularly the advice given by Dave S (DMCMW Dave).

The spacers are just flat washers. The Girling front shocks have a sleeve on the bottom of the shock that makes contact with both sides of the lower control arm. The Monroe and the Gabriel only have a small eyehole on the bottom. The washers you need have to fit the diameter of the lower mounting bolt. If you find the other shocks this is all very straight forward. Just lay them side by side and you will see the difference on the bottom. A few owners have mounted these without the washers but I'd advise against it wheras the shock would slide back and forth on the lower mounting bolt. Not to mention our stock LCA's are a little flimsy. Having a nice solid contact on both sides will help keep them fairly stiff.
I have been running the Gabriels on my fronts now for about 2 years with no problem.
