Hey All, I got an email from a friend of my wife's today stating this:
"In a small town called Volo, Illinois there is an antique car museum that has the original delorean from the back to the future movie and we thought about you all."
I thought the "A" car was currently being restored, not in a museum. Am I wrong here?
Curious...

That is a different BTTF Delorean. The actual A car is still being worked on. The one in VOLO has an automatic. All the BTTF Deloreans used in the movies were manuals.

The Volo car is one of the George Barris knockoffs. As are most of the BTTF cars that are in musuems.

Pardon my bad English.
What is meant by a knockoff? Sounds like they are imitations presented as "screen used"? Am I right?

A knock off is another term for a replica, but perhaps of lesser quality than an official replica
Those pavement/sidewalk vendors in big cities are selling Gucci handbag knock-offs, rather than replicas

Yeah without getting into painful detail the one at the museum in IL is pretty far off in terms of accuracy to the screen used cars.

Sorry - an American colloquialism I'm afraid. Good description by Dangermouse - in general it means "copy" but is usually used as a derogitory term.
Especially so in this case. These "Barris BTTF cars" are all over the US in museums, and generally the tour guide at the museum truly believes that they have the only screen-used car in any museum. The givaway is the Barris signature on the front fender. As well as the inacurracies obvious if you've seen the movie more than one time.

Barris is great at misrepresenting his cars and his work. He has been successfully sued on more than one occasion. One can only hope that they didn't pay a lot thinking they were buying a "screen" car.

This would be a great example of a knock-off

What's really sad is there are 17 people willing to buy it!
Here's what I don't get... I understand the world of kit cars... it's cool if you are into it. But I've always loved the ones that you can take a huge step back and have to look for the differences. The dimensions are correct, nothing has been shortened, etc...
Cars like these and alot of the corvette/fiero testarossa kits from the 80's that had the dimensions completely wrong, wrong rims, etc... I've always wondered WHY... Why say you want a Ferrari or Lambo kit car, but you buy or build one that is completely WRONG?!?
I remember a few years ago a guy was building rear engine Murcialago and Diablo replicas that were V8 powered, and until you cracked the door open, you could barely tell the difference from a distance. Even up close, if you didnt know what you were looking at, you could have been fooled if the car had dark tint. THOSE kits I would drop a dime for.
That thing I would drop off the top of a garage and make it go boom boom.

I like this:
"No one would know its not the real Lambo."
and
"Full replica engine".
How is an V8 LS1 (good engine that it is) a replica of a Lambo V12
So are they saying that it is based of an 05ish Pontiac GTO?

omg. These guys are literally 4 miles from my house (Eagle, ID). I should try and go see this so called "replica"! I have never heard of them nor can I find much on a Google search...odd, yet funny!

On a somewhat related note...there is a Special Event at the Volo Auto Museum this weekend.
I received this notice via email from the Volo Auto Museum and since Tucker is often discussed
with DeLorean regarding the same background, theme and conspiricy theories, here you go...
This Saturday Sept. 29th
Special Unveiling of the Tucker built for and used in the 1988 movie
“Tucker, The Man and His Dream”.
On loan for a limited time courtesy of the Tucker Club of America.

The Volo car is one of the George Barris knockoffs. As are most of the BTTF cars that are in musuems. In the Cleveland Autorama 2008, I saw a BTTF replica. It was the first DeLorean I had ever seen in person. Guy claimed the makers of the original BTTF cars went back five years later and made that one, but also stated they made "kits" for conversion :confused2: . TV monitors in every orifice playing BTTF, very obvious inaccuracies (gas flap hood and blue LEDs for starters), and wouldn't you know it, George Barris was in attendance. The owner went so far as to get George Barris to sign the dash of this BTTF replica, and took pictures of it, something that I will never, ever understand. Tried to sell it twice on eBay with those pictures, but never met the reserve, staying at $35,000 both times. Knowing what a bad name he has in relation to the BTTF/DeLorean community, I don't understand why the hell anyone would even consider having him of all people sign one that wasn't actually his. But evidently some owners are clueless :hmm:
