Thanks!13787

This counter basically counts until a certain mileage(I forget the exact number) and then turns on the light to replace your O2 sensor. For some reason this gets disconnected a lot on cars. A previous owner on my car completely cut the wires off it.

Yours is clearly unplugged. Try plugging it in. Who knows, maybe your lambda light will come on...

It's set for 30000 miles. The idea is that you change out the O2 sensor and then reset the counter and do it all again.

If you take the counter off you'll see a window with a number counter (odometer) that counts to 100 and turns on the light. 100 = 30K miles. If it has never been reset, for example if the speedo reads 20K the counter will read 066.
Quite often once the car hits 30K someone can't figure out how to reset it, and they unplug it.

Do I have to remove it to reset it?

Ok, I connected the wires and it turns my LAMBDA light on. I am assuming that it is over 100.....
So do I just unscrew the 2 screws that are on top of it?

What is the mileage on the odometer, out of curiosity?

Yes.
To make it easier to reset, remove the speedo cable from the top and bottom of the unit and remove it completely.
It goes without saying that if you reset the Lambda counter, you should also replace your O2 sensor if you haven't already. That's what the light is reminding you to do, after all.

That Lambda counter was required by the US EPA to schedule a service that was to include:
1) resetting the counter back to zero
2) replacement of the O2 sensor
3) check and adjustment of the manual valve tappets
4) an emission check and if necessary a tune-up.
It is not necessary to remove the counter to reset it but it does make it easier. Take a paperclip and bend it into a U shape. Insert the ends into the 2 holes in the button on the side and rotate it till you get the # to zero. The way you convert the # on the counter to miles is 0 = 0 and 30,000 miles = 100% on the counter. 50% would = 15,000 miles and so on.

also the thing is one more link in the line of a potentially in-operational speedometer.

The top one is shorter and can be more difficult. Remove the bottom one first, then take the counter off the bracket. Top one should just drop out once the counter is loose.

The upper and lower speedometer cables are supposed to come out easily from the Lambda Counter. The ends of the cables are Square and are inserted into a square fitting inside the Lambda Counter. Try giving the spiral wound cable a gentle tug with some pliers. Not sure why yours is stuck.
More Lambda Counter fun for everyone.
