Hey all,

Just saw an ebay auction ending today with 2 Certificates of Origin for DeLoreans from a guy who got DeLorean Motor Company records after the bankruptcy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170917018819?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Based on the last two pictures, this are for VIN 6558 and VIN 6506.

In the first few pictures, is that spanish on the paperwork? I can't tell what language that is.

Yes, it is Spanish (part of the auction is for DeLorean trademark certificates from Spain).

As it is a trademark application for Spain, probably so :)

Yes, it is Spanish (part of the auction is for DeLorean trademark certificates from Spain).I thought so, but I didn't know DMC had any involvement in Spain whatsoever, so I thought perhaps it was Irish.

Anyways, I did a quick search, and neither VIN has been mentioned on this forum before, so the owners probably aren't on here.

They didn't get as far as establishing a European dealer network.

What is a Certificate of Origin anyway?

What is a Certificate of Origin anyway?I'm actually curious myself. I have a scan of the one for my D, but I don't know the exact purpose. My educated guess is that it's some sort of receipt that the car was actually produced and is the foundation of the vehicle's title, but I'm not quite sure.

If I were to hazard a guess, I would say they are documents certifying that the vehicle was manufactured in an EU nation, for tax purposes.

per wiki, fwiw:

A Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO), also known as a Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin (MSO), is a specified document certifying the country of origin of the merchandise required by certain foreign countries for tariff purposes, it sometimes requires the signature of the consulate of the country to which it is destined.

MSOs are also used as ownership documents in cases where a particular car has never been titled. This is done by collectors to maintain "new" status on these cars.

Someone like Tony @ DMCFL could chime in on this, as I believe his Concours car has an MSO and is not titled.

So are the cars shipped to the dealership with a MCO, where the dealer is the "owner". Then this is replaced by a "Title" when the car is sold?

That's the way it works to my understanding. A car's title is only generated when a car is "sold"; the MSO follows the car from it's birth to the sale process.

I'm not an expert though, and I could be wrong. Hopefully someone who knows more about it will chime in.

That's how it works.

We have an MSO title car here as well. Kind of a neat looking document. It's the "factory" title and gets turned in to the state when getting the first title on the car when new. This particular car was never sold, i.e. the dealer kept it, and it has apparently sold a time or two without ever being titled.

PS if anyone is interested the VIN is 6964, and it is loosely for sale. At this time it is unrestored original with 1200(?) miles.

Closest neighbor yet for 6960!!!

I have heard of a couple of MSO DeLoreans. I think DMCH has one as well.

I wonder if MSO documents are unique (i.e. irreplaceable) and if so, how did the ones in the auction get separated from their respective cars.

The weird thing is the D was never even in Illinois. It started in New Jersey, traveled to other nearby states, wound up in Michigan, went to Nevada, then was shipped here to Ohio, but its tires never touched the road in Illinois :dunno:

(It did ride on at least one car carrier driving through Illinois however.)
