Not sure what its called, torsion bar or spring maybe? Anyways its to hold your glove box lid open. Does your lid stay up by itself?
EDIT: It is called torsion bar

The thin end goes into the lid and the thicker one gets bolted behind one of the hinges so that the spring is 'loaded' when the lid is closed. You should see the slot in the lid and the scalloped-out hinge, I think it's on the driver's side. From there it should be obvious how to position it.

As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, it's all fixed, works great!
I really love this forum.

http://store.delorean.com/p-9804-torsion-bar.aspxI was wondering what that was! I found the same thing in mine, and couldn't figure out what it was for. I figured the PO stored some non-DeLorean stuff in the glovebox and just forgot about it. Thanks!
Looking at the pictures above and in the aforementioned thread, the left side in the picture above (wide "U") goes in the bottom of the right hinge, and the right side in the picture above (very narrow "U") goes in the top of the left hinge. Basically rotate the above image 180 degrees for proper orientation. Although since both hinges are the same, it may be possible to flip this left-to-right.
Now to bookmark this thread for later!

Well, the narrow side does not really go into the hinge...there is a hole in the glove box door, that the narrow part shoves into, just before the hinge, so it pretty much has to go in like the pic. It is much better to have the glove box stay open when you are looking for something.
