Hello all, I have a wild idea and I need some input from some of you that have backgrounds in enginnering. The company I work for employs a system of Cathodic Protection to protect its storage tanks from corrosion. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathodic_protection

This is not 100% like the system we use but the principal is the same. There are two ways in which this works. Either by using a sacrificial metal dug into the ground to act as the anode (in our case this would not work because our cars aren't stationary and the chassis aren't dug into the ground) or by running a low level electrical charge through the metal to remove the anode protecting the metal from corroding. Could a system like this be adapted to a mobile setup? Can we make a system like this work on a car using a car battery? Of course it would have to be closely monitored because if the system goes rouge and starts working in reverse it would completley destroy the frame very quickly. As it was explained to me one amp could destroy 20 pounds of steel in one year! Just curious its nothing I'm planning on trying anytme soon wheras I don't have quite the background for this. But I thought some of you might have some ideas on this. Plus it might be a fun topic to discuss.

Yes, you can buy a small device specially made for this, no engineering skills needed.

Been on the market for decades, vehicles working on salt mines use this technology, the way it works, your battery will sacrifice instead of your vehicle metal parts.

Note: Bet David is googling looking for a very long answer!

No they do not work. Do the research.

LOL,

I read the title as "Catholic Protection and the Delorean Chassis " .

But i can't discuss what I thought as we have a No Religion rule

NOOOO! Don't get the thread locked! At least not 4 posts in anyway :)

The problem with "Do the research" , is that you will find a lot of different answers/pointS of view and you have to believe some.

I did the same thing.

This is not practical in an automotive situation. The way it is usually done is through barrier protection, ie, a coating of some kind (paint) to isolate the steel from moisture and air. On some cars they use zinc coatings where the zinc is sacrificial.

Is that a short enough answer?
