I'm working on a local car with an ASI radio. The FM radio works pretty well (considering) but the AM is terrible. Much quieter than FM and there is a clicking sound that changes with engine speed. It's very hard to listen to.
Is there an obvious cause for this? Or is the radio starting to go bad?

I'd say the first problem is, you're listening to AM.... No, but seriously, it could be from the engine. I know that depending on the antenna placement, simply the engin's operation gives of signals that can affect AM signals. Just a thought.

Spark plug wires. Especially if some idiot installed solid core wires.

I've always had this exact problem and never have been able to solve it. I supposedly have shielded spark plug wires (from Hervey) but the problem persists. Please post if you find the solution.

Spark plug wires. Especially if some idiot installed solid core wires.
Knowing this car the wires are all original. I will suggest replacement of them, including the coil wire.

The ASI radio's AM is not great to begin with. Check the antenna to be sure it is well grounded. If the stations in your area are weak there is no cure. A bad ignition wire could cause part of the problem.
