Engine Compression Increase: Cylinder compression can be improved by using oil containing zinc, as zinc will adhere to piston cylinder walls. Zinc in engine oil will attach to worn cylinder walls and improve compression. (A Compression Let Down test will indicate if compression is low in the cylinder). Telltale signs such as oil escaping where the oil dip stick tube enters the engine block indicates low compression. The consequence is low miles per gallon and slower acceleration. We use Pennzoil High Milage 10W30 motor oil containing zinc, plus, Engine RESTORE (Autozone) high zinc content lubricant for six cylinder engines. Not a cure-all but will improve engine compression as mileage increases. Byrne

Maybe unrelated, but does higher weight oil contribute to reduced acceleration? I still use 20W50 in my car, which I've been told is a good choice given the climate here in northern CA. However I've noticed that my well maintained, clean running engine seems to accelerate slower than other D's I've ridden in. Not sure what oil those guys use though.
