View Full Version : Electrical Opinions on a replacement radio, One I found on eBay....

My D still has the factory Craig unit in it, (Tape player doesn't work because the belts are rotted).
I'm going to upgrade the speakers and wiring but, I can't make up my mind on what type of radio I'd like?

My Mini Van has a nice touch screen unit that has DVD, Blue tooth, hard drive, GPS and all the other Neat stuff so, I've gotten spoiled by New technology, Something I'd Love to also have in 6599.
(Knowing I can't have All that).

I'd love to have a 7" touch screen 2DIN radio in my D but, I'm limited to the 1DIN category. All but 1 of the flip out 7" screen radios that I've found flip UP, and in the way of the Much needed air vents.
I've seen a thread on here where the owner did a bit of work to convert the vent area to a flip up radio, moving the vents down but, I don't think I want to go that route.

Out of all the 1DIN GPS radios I've found on eBay, (and elsewhere), the Only one that the screen flips down vs. Up, is this one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261072627956?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I realize that the screen on this unit would half cover my light, hazard and fan mode switches but I don't adjust them as much as I play with my radio.?.?

Any Road, I was trying to get any opinions from those here that have Flip out radios in their D's.

FYI, there is someone on this forum working on a double DIN console. I don't remember who.

Search on "double" and ye shall find.

I'd rather stay on the 1 DIN side with my D. Why, I don't know?

Funny thing is, I have a Brand New 2 DIN radio that originally came with my Grand Caravan, (I paid for an Upgraded system), that has Everything except GPS.

That's interesting that it folds down instead of up. If you're going with a head unit that flips out, I would definitely go with that type. I have one in my car that flips up and I hate it. Worst decision I ever made with my car. It's such an annoyance. During the day, the light from the windshield creates a bad glare, and and the screen completely blocks the only good vents in the car. The only time I ever flip out the screen now is if I need to adjust the audio levels, then I immediately retract the screen.

The only thing I'm curious about with that one is if you can do anything while the screen is not out. With mine, you can still do pretty much all standard functions when the screen is away. Not sure about the one listed.

I'm still waiting for the double DIN dash project to finish :D

Based upon the pics of the unit that I posted, It looks like you can't do anything if the screen is retracted. :(

But, It doesn't get in the way of the vents. :)
$269 is a chunk of change, But I've got a bit of extra right now and may just plunk it down to see what I get from Hong Kong for my Dream car...

The other quotes I've had, (from the local Sounds Great Stereo is), $800 -$1600 for a unit that has the same features.
And they've never worked on, (or Seen), a DeLorean before.
Some of the options involved with these are adding a Backup camera, Which would require a new Rear View mirror.
(I'm having Fun with the just the Stock mirror)...

Another option would be to swap the vent/radio slots around as Chris Hawes did and kindly posted the pictures on our forum:

Thanks to All for the links and different options for my search to make 6599 as Up to Date, (sound wise), as possible!

I've gone ahead and bought the eBay radio I originally linked to, and have purchased a set of Infinity 3.5 and 5.25 speakers for the front and rear.
I know I won't go wrong with the speakers but, the radio is yet to be determined if it's going to be a Good fit for the car.
(I did purchase a 1Din faceplate from DMCH along with other things). :)

After looking back over the specs for the radio, I don't see where it has a Power antenna wire hook up? (I Need that).

According to the tracking, I should have speakers, radio and such by this coming Friday.

The power antenna wire will probably be blue and marked 'remote turn-on'

I currently have this somewhat strange unit in my car

1442514426

purchased from

http://www.mp3playerstore.com/catalog/GPS__BLUETOOTH__TOUCH_SCREEN/Innovatek_IN-W5GPS_Windows_Car_GPSBluetooth_Player_-_USACANADA_GPS_Maps.html

While the hardware is pretty nice, especially considering the price, the software is weird and has a not quite finished feel to it. But interestingly its Windows CE based and not locked down, so its easy to install any Windows CE software you want. I was able to copy the iGo nav software (much better than what the Innovatek unit comes with) from my Jensen flip up unit and it ran fine.

If you want to just plug and go I'd probably stay away from this unit, but if you like to tinker with computers it might be a good choice. I was able to get remote debugging via wifi working, where I could use Visual Studio on a PC to compile and debug code running on the radio.

After trying many different locations for screens of all types (Chinese GPS unit, small monitor, Galaxy phone, etc..) I've come to the conclusion there is NO good location to put in a screen. The glare from our very sharply raked windshields and from the side glass that is so high up in the doors pretty much washes everything out. At night, great. Daytime, nope.

I think I have mentioned it many times before:

JVC KD-AVX55 or 77

http://jdl.jvc-europe.com/product.php?id=KD-AVX77E&catid=100100&lg=de

I've had it for 3-4 years now and I woiuld buy it again !

no GPS but backup camera, Bluetooth, DVD, USB (I have a 2 1/2"HDD connected to it),
touchscreen....it plays even songs from my iPhone via bluetooth
Display is bright and sits great in the center console so that there are no sun problems.

I've watched about 50 episodes of 2 1/2 men on it on our trip thru Austria,
let BTTF run on it at car meetings...

Put a magnet in the battery compartment of the remote and it sticks to the
center cosole.

I haven't seen anything better yet.

Take a look - that's how the JVC KD-AVX77 looks like installed in a Delorean.

One picture is of a standard background and the other one is with the rearview camera
activated.

I usually have HDD connected to it with tons of music an movies.

I have gone for the 'swap radio and vents' (aka Chris Hawes option) to allow for a flip-up screen; actually a VGA monitor with integrated radio. I don't have anything to connect it to yet but I intend to put in a car PC (with GPS + mapping software + blu-ray) at a later date : maybe in a rear cubbyhole. Limited funds ATM due to hoping to get one of Josh's upcoming Legend-style TT engines!
