Fuel smell in trunk...

I have a slight fuel smell that I have noticed over the past few weeks coming from the fuel pump area. It is not noticable when the car is running, only after it sits for awhile.

I opened the door to get into the car this morning, I had not driven it in 2 days, and the cabin smelled like gas. I narrowed down the fuel smell coming from the fuel pump area. I have the new all-in-one unit, but it did not smell right away when I did the install. The pump had broke and DMCH replaced it last month. I began noticing a pink-ish dried spot on the top edge of the white of the new fuel pump. That means to me that some gas is getting out.

I checked all of the vent hoses, filler hose and I reset the fuel pump in the hole along with the rubber gasket. I still smell a hint of gas when everything is buttoned up. With the trunk closed I can put my nose near the edge of it and the windshield and I smell a hint of gas.


Has anyone ever had this issue? With or without the new fuel pump?

Next time you think the car is in that situation do a test. Take off the fuel filler cap while noting whether it hisses when it unseals as if the tank is pressurized.

No pressure means the venting and vapor recovery system are behaving normally and can be ruled out as contributing to the problem. Get that behind you.

I will try that. So I should hear nothing? If I have vapor leaking somewhere that causes the smell I will hear nothing too, right?

Right. No pressure, no hissing is what you want.

And, correct, if the leak is too big then this test won't tell you much. There will be no residual pressure if there is a large leak.

Is your tank full? I know if I fill my tank to the very top and park the car I'll have a very slight odor. My assumption is that I have gas in the fill tube or around the fuel pump that is ever so slighly seeping out. After buring through about 1/2 gallon of gas the smell goes away completely so it has never worried me enough to track it down.

Yes, it was full. That could be a possibility. I am driving it about 100 miles a week so I will check in a bit..
