I'm sure this has been asked prior but I couldn't find any answers after a quick search. Why does the VIN numbering jump at different points in time during production?

Here's what I mean. 500-7199 goes in order. Then it jumps to 10001 and goes to 12199. Then it jumps to 15002 and really starts to jump around after that. I'm using the Chronology PDF as my primary reference.

I think it was to tell a 81 from an 82, and from an 83...

I think it has something to do with Consolidated International. I think a few were assembled after the "fall" so to speak.
