View Full Version : Frame & Body Torsion bar curiosity

I adjusted the passenger side torsion bar on my car last night, down one spline. I noticed that with the door hyper-extended (t-panel off, strut off), that there was next to no tension in the bar. So I'm just curious if anybody knows how much force gets exerted by a properly adjusted bar when the door is closed?

With my doors open past vertical (T-panel off, struts off and propped as wide as it can go), I can release all the tension on the bar with the bar bracket just shy of hitting the rear window.

Are you asking how much torque is on that bar with the door fully closed?

Yes, that's what I am asking. No real reason for wanting to know, just curious.

Good question but unless it's posted in some engineering notes I don't think we would find the answer. I would not think the hex end holding tool would hold a fully closed door to do a measurement. My wild ass guess would be 300 ft/lbs.

It will (if you use 1/2" drive tools) but is VERY hard on the allen hex in the bar. It can stretch the head of the bar so that it won't fit in the clamp splines. I wouldn't try to make that measurement either.

Those who are manufacturing torsion bars at this time should have the answer. If you know the total weight of the door, measurements and the angle of movement you. should be able to do the math.
