View Full Version : General Does anyone have a B28 Engine Reconditioning Shop Manual?

I have tried to buy one at books4cars.com, but they don't have one in stock. I was hoping that someone here had one that I could either borrow or buy, since the DMC manual's engine section isn't very specific on tearing down the motor.
Since this is my first time attempting a motor refurb, I need all the help and advice I can get.

Have you tried the Volvo manuals in this thread?

I picked up copies of those Volvo books for a few bucks on Ebay. They're definitely a nice addition to the DMC shop manual's engine section. Also, you'll notice an updated head bolt torque pattern (amongst other things).

The Delorean manuals were written assuming they would be used by technicians with experience on automobiles. They were not written to include every step. The other manuals are more inclusive. I would still follow the specs as outlined in the Delorean manuals.

As someone who has never rebuilt an engine before, I will be reading as much as I can. Hopefully there are some more experienced PRV people that can give me pointers along the way.
My first step is to remove the heads. I'm wondering if it's worth tearing down to the block if everything inside looks ok. My original plan was to strip it down, hot tank the block & check for corrosion/pitting, powder coat, then re-assemble.
Is it wise to re-use the pistons and liners? In the manual it recommends using new.
Am I biting off more than I can chew by attempting this?

A lot depends on why you are doing the engine job and what you find as you disassemble it. The "bottom end" is usually pretty durable. Unless you overheated it badly or had water in the oil or see scoring in the cylinders you can probably stop with just doing a "top job". The PRV can last over 100,000 miles if you change the oil often and do not overheat it. Before taking it all apart you should do a compression test and a leak-down test. Maybe there is no reason to even take the heads off. Did it use oil between oil changes?

The heads are generally a mess. The PO somehow found a way to strip out every threaded hole in them and put helicoils in. Also, there is some freeze plug corrosion/rust going on. So, at a minimum, the heads are coming off and will likely be replaced. The engine ran rather poorly in the 10 minutes I was able to drive it, but I can't really say for sure what combination of issues caused the condition. Of course, it remains to be seen what lies beneath the heads.
I want this car to last, and since I'm doing a frame-off restoration on it, I figured I may as well rebuild the motor for peace of mind. As a "while i'm in there" kind of thing... disassemble, clean, make pretty, rebuild = solid motor that will last a good long time.
I guess the best thing for me to do is take the heads off and post pics of what lies beneath. I'm sure there are more well trained eyes than mine on this forum.

I went into my rebuild with pretty much no knowledge of how to rebuild a motor. Using only the DeLorean shop manual and general internet reading I managed to rebuild it with no problems whatsoever. If your a quick study and find things generally easy to figure out how they work, you'll do just fine. 4 days after my rebuild I drove it over 800 miles roundtrip.
Regarding a few specific questions...
I would go ahead and tear down the entire engine. If even just ONE liner pops loose when removing the heads your going to have to do it anyways. Hot-tanking the block is a great idea, though I never did it myself. Removing old gasket material will take more time than the actual disassembling of the motor. Reusing the pistons and liners should be no issue unless it looks like the pistons have been burning. Mark their respective numbers and positions and reinstall in the same locations. Replace the rings and call it a day.
Too bad my rebuild thread is long gone.

Damn! That would have been a big help.
Was it on the old forum?

Yep, DMCTalk.com.
Stupid me never copied it off of Google Cache when it was still available. If I had even just the text I could piece most everything back together as I still have most of the pictures to go with it. Archive.org doesn't report having anything for that thread either.
If anyone else out there has internet caching tools, its old address was...

The wayback machine didn't archive your thread by its friendly name above, but it may have it all the same. Check this out: http://wayback.archive.org/web/*/http://www.dmctalk.com/*
You might need to search those results to find your thread but my bet is it's in there. Do you remember the title of it?
