Installing new pedal pads?

I bought a set of new pedal pads, but I don't know if I should use glue or silicone to hold them down. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not sure if some RTV would stop them from sliding around and tearing like the originals did, or if it will just make them hard to replace when the next time comes around.

By the way, the new pads really look nice with the logo embossed on them.

That would definitely hold, but man what a mess that stuff is to remove later. Might use it anyway, since if the pads stay put they hopefully won't rip and need to be replaced.

Will do! My current ones are mostly still in decent shape, though the clutch pedal has the whole bottom edge ripped open - so it keeps falling off.

The rest pedal kit recommends silicone/RTV for the pads. That should work just fine, and come off easily if you ever want or need to.

Fair enough, sounds like a plan to me :) There was nothing underneath the original pad that shredded and fell off so I wasn't sure. RTV makes sense though. Pictures soon!

Interesting, as I have never felt that any glue is necessary on the pedal pads. The factory didn't either.

After years of getting my shoes caught in the pedals and pulling the rubber pads off I finally had enough. These aluminum pedal pads are screwed on and won't come off.

+1 on Dave's comment.

I've replaced mine. No glue needed. The rear aperture of each pad is stretched open just enough to slip them over the metal base. It's tough to get them on. After the back of the pad closes up over the base it doesn't move a bit.

If your old pads came off showing a glue job beneath then a PO probably did it. Probably won't hurt to glue them, but why bother?

Fair enough, I will try slipping the new pads on with no glue first and see what the situation is. Maybe the clutch pad is moving because it's ripped and not the other way around. The other two feel just fine.

Another idea to help make them stay put it to stick a pad of emery tape, or grip tape like on skate boards, Then put the pad over. The gritty tape will give a bite into the rubber so it wont want to slide and start tearing the corners.

By the way 3031, that is one fine looking Delorean!!! Is that a remanufactured one????
I like those pedals also, where did you get those?
Word of advice... put one of those on the dead pedal also.

Thanks, No it's not a reman. Just been in the family since 1981. Just turned 20,000 on it a couple weeks ago. I just did a suspension job on it this summer. Love the new feel, the way God intended. I have some other pics on my page. About the dead pedal. your right, but I can't find them at the auto store in that style any more. Still looking.8)

OK, got the pads in. No glue required at all, the fit is extremely tight. Some pictures as promised!

The new pads. You can see the new clutch/brake pads have the DMC logo molded into them. The NOS accelerator pedal pad was absolutely coated in mold release wax.

Did I mention that the NOS pad was *COVERED* in mold release? It wasn't anything that some hot water, dishsoap and a toothpick couldn't remove though.

New pads installed. In the light from the flash it's clear that I didn't end up getting all that mold release wax off the accelerator pedal. I may have to pull that back off and make sure it's fully removed so that I don't end up with wax ground into my carpet or floormats. Any advice on removing that stuff completely?

I'll give that a try. I don't have lacquer thinner on hand at home, do you think standard paint thinner will suffice?

Seems like my hot water experiment is evidence that this won't work, the wax just softens up and flows around, then re-solidifies where it lays.

I do. But there's no reason to cut a corner on something this simple. Besides, the wax will wear off and end up in tiny balls on the floor, which will get mashed into the carpet, and that's a bigger mess and much harder to clean up.

Don't know, never tried paint thinner. I just know the only thing that worked really well for me when I needed to get my new window channel upper seal rubber COMPLETELY clean, was lacquer thinner. You can get a small can of it for around $6 at any auto parts store or hardware store.

Fair enough, thanks :) If I can get a small amount I will do so. I just try to limit the number of giant jugs of single use chemicals and crap I have laying around the garage.

Yeah, now that Clint mentioned it I remember trying to find it to dissolve my old outer door seals (I put WAY too much 8008 on) and it is absolutely positively not available. I ended up using about 10 hours of elbow grease and a thousand straight razor blades to achieve the same results that 2 oz of thinner and 90 seconds would have gotten me.

I guess my local Ace didn't get the memo. They have a few containers of lacquer thinner (though it might be a special CA formulation) - but I didn't buy it, as there are warnings on it that make me think it might not be safe for use on rubber. Jim, what do you think? All the other solvents/goo removers had similar warnings about use on rubber.

Come to think of it, it was Naptha I was trying to find for the door seals, not lacquer thinner. This stuff is labeled 30% VOC which I guess must be within the tolerance.

Funny, I had the same wax on my new accelerator rubber and not on both other ones. I scaped it off, all fine.
I do not have the DMC logo on them, I kinda like that.

to DMC3031, cool to have such a good looking original Delorean, take good care of her!

Pardon the thread necromancy but I wanted to offer my advice for the next person who has to replace their pads and finds this thread. When I was putting mine on, I found it helpful to use a blunt, hooked tool to stretch them far enough to fit. I used a sturdy hanger-hook, the kind that's looped at the end, like so:55666
