Stainless Steel Pipe VOD Rusting?

Hi all,

My S/S pipe in the VOD is rusting. Does that make sense? I bought the pipe from John Hervey. I just installed it 2 months ago. Car is under work. I checked it out today, it is rusted all over. It has rust spots all over. Why would that happen??

Cheap stainless with a very high carbon content. Or it is actually mild steel. I have replaced a number of those and ditch a number more years ago.

That pipe is totally optional. Its only purpose is to locate a barb on the backside of the engine to speed up assembly line manufacture. You can replace it with a length of hose no problem. One owner has been running a hose in place of that pipe for nearly a decade now (about 10,000 miles per year).

Yes that pipe. Mine has rust spots all over, and it is a new part.

Some stainless will mildly rust hence the name stainless and not stainfree. You would hope that it would be just as nice looking as the day you installed it but depending on the environment it might begin to rust right away. Call John and ask if he will send you a new one. I bought one this year and installed it and if I'm lucky I will never see it again and it will not rust through or collect inside corrosion like the steel pipe did that was replace. Stainless will always last longer than steel, it will not rust through like mild steel will.

Hmmm... I'd be more concerned about what the inside looks like right now. I redid my valley last summer and the inside of my original was heavily corroded and build up had blocked most of the flow through.

So I used a magnet and the magnet sticks right on easily!

Compare how that magnet sticks to regular steel. Some real powerful magnets will stick a little to stainless. You can also compare how it sticks to a body panel.

Does John sell one that is not stainless? Maybe he shipped you the wrong one.

I used a cheap simple magnet, stuck right on. I have a S/S bracket, doesn't stick on what so ever. He only sells these "Stainless Steel" ones.

Crap "stainless" - many china made so called "stainless steel" is about a stainless as un painted mild steel sheet metal. I'd not bother dealing with John Harvey, but cancel the credit card charges.

You only have 30 days to appeal CC charges. Seller should take full responsibility and do a recall to all his customers who bought this part.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt, contact him and let us know how it goes. Maybe he got a bad batch, it may happen to anyone.

This is not uncommon in the auto industry. 303 stainless is routinely employed because of its high machineability. It will rust, especially if exposed to salts.

The Borgeson stainless steel u-joints & steering components that are often used on the DeLorean are made of the same material, and will rust accordingly.

It is also often the case that the stainless steel products were bent/machined/otherwise processed by regular tool steel. In this case, traces of the carbon steel tooling will often be deposited onto the stainless steel product and will rust, giving the stainless steel the appearance of rusting.

You are 100% correct but, after it failed the magnet test you know it had to be something else.

I did email John. He said its supposed to be all stainless, he will check up on them this coming week.

404 is good for this application, I believe yours is not 404, he should replace it for free ASAP. John should not keep you waiting that long, he claims it would never rust, it is not fair.

Pass/Fail depends on whether the test is that the magnet sticks to the steel, or the magnet doesn't stick to the steel.

When you do a magnet test on stainless steel, you expect the magnet no to stick to the tested piece, if the magnet does stick, then it failed the test.

A failed test does not necessarily mean the tested piece is defective or of low quality.

IIRC 400 series (ferritic) stainless is magnetic.

300 series (austenitic), such as our body panels are made of, is not.

My old pipe from John is not magnetic. Can't make out all the numbers printed on it but it sure looks like 304 stainless.

He emailed me that they used to make it in 304. This batch is 404. He'll try and get 304 next year.

You should get your money back. What is going to happen with the remaining of that batch?

Bet you are not the only one with this problem, you and others paid a premium price for "peace of mind" and end up with the opposite.
