View Full Version : Electrical Cabin Lighting Fixture Upgrades?

Has anyone added different cabin lighting fixtures? I know many have used brighter LEDs, but I'm looking to go bigger. The stock lights seem small and dim compared to modern cars. My rear cabin light has always been hanging by its wire since a tab broke off, and it doesn’t even seem to fit. Ideally, I’d like something that’s larger, a little more modern looking, brighter, and LED. I’ve pulled my headliners, and want to weigh my options for replacing these yellowed plastic dome lights.

The back cut out was for some reason larger than the front. So keeping my light fixture from falling out I hot glued it in.

In regards to brightness, go SMD and you'll have plenty of light.

Remember, do not use the new Super Bright LEDs that use the switching regulator (two black cylinders on circuit board) if you want to use my dome light unit.

Here's a thread about how I used the largest SMD LED bulb that would fit in the stock fixtures without modifying them.
http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?152-Cheap-basic-LED-interior-lights
They put out way more light then a standard incandescent bulb and best of all are cheap and easy to install. Here is a link to them directly on eBay (warning, eBay links don't last long, so don't wait or else you'll have to search for 3528 LED bulbs that match the picture in the thread above):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-x-39mm-16-LEDs-SMD-3528-Super-White-Festoon-Dome-Car-Bulb-Lamp-LED-Light-N98B-/130781510988?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e732f7d4c&vxp=mtr

I also put large arrays under the dash to light up the foot-wells. Very similar to the pics posted above, but much quicker and easier to do while still giving plenty of light to find stuff inside at night.

I like those rear side lights... I might have to investigate that.

For the front map light, I'm interested in something like this:

Looking closely at the pics it appears that car's front map light is a standard Houston unit modified to hold a 3x6 SMD array.

Be nice.

I was talking about the car in the DMA scrapbook.

The YouTube clip you mention clearly is not a Houston fixture. And it has a 3x5 array, not 3x6. Plus the SMD's appear to be 3mm (or smaller), not 5mm like the car in the DMA scrapbook.

I suspect the car in the DMA scrapbook has its array just laying on the lens, like Farrar Hudkins' car, in which case 18 5mm SMD elements are about the most that can be squeezed in. The fixture appears to be modified to shine flush with the headliner in door mode rather than being flipped forward or backward.

Be nice. And just why the hell would I do that when the only thing you've done is be a jackass to everyone, while offering input that is either unhelpful, irrelevant, wrong, or all three? When you start showing us some respect here on these forums, you'll earn our respect that you very quickly lost due to your attitude. In the meantime, I have no reason to be nice to you since you very obviously cannot play nice with others, or simply refuse to do so. I do not show others respect if they refuse to show me any, and the same goes for most other members of this forum. That is how the world works, and if you don't like it, then I suggest you walk back out the door you came in and venture elsewhere.

The original poster stated he would like to explore LED cabin lighting options. I posted pertinent links to pictures in the DMA scrapbook. Original poster even responded that he liked some of the LED options illustrated therein.

Is that really "jackass" or "unhelpful, irrelevant, wrong, or all three?"

Still looking for any alternatives to the stock map light.

Front map light options depend upon the flat mounting area, which is fairly wide (5.5" max) but not very long (1.75"), unless of course you plan to mount it elsewhere in the headliner.

LED's typically are very directional, which can be a problem with a stock fixture. If you position the fixture to shine into the cabin in map light mode, it will be pointed towards the hood in door mode. You could just wire it to always be in auto mode. Then you can aim it anyway you want.

Do you mean always in door mode (Purple/White ground)? The problem with that is you lose the ability to turn the light on while the doors are closed.

The car pictured in the DMA scrapbook has had its fixture modified to shine straight down in door mode, and still turn on map mode (doors closed) when flipped back towards the passenger cabin.

As well as changing the interior dome lights to LED, I also added 12v LED strips to the footwell.
These really make the car feel a bit more modern and handy if you need to work down in the footwell areas ;)

Sorry, the stainless steel bodies are grounded to the battery? That's news to me . Tell me more about how this connection is made, Emdf and Mike (since youre in agreement).

DeLoreans have fiberglass bodies. This means the body cannot be used as a ground for attached components. Contrary to your assertion, the stainless steel body panels do not remedy this. Moreover, not a single component on the car relies upon the stainless panels as a path to ground. This is unlike a car with a steel body, and this was his point.

Looks like Bill got you on that one.

I say yet again: the name on my account is "David Brooks".

DeLorean stainless body panels are tied together, and to the battery, with *ONE* single 18 gauge wire (enters the passenger compartment under the windshield by the passenger A pillar). This is for static electricity dissipation only. DeLorean body panel bonding was never intended to ground electrical devices. That is why, unlike metal bodied cars which do use their bodies as a massive ground plane, every single light socket has both a positive lead and a negative lead tied to ground junctions inside the car.

Keeping the thread on topic: note that aftermarket xRef light sockets often do not have dedicated ground wires -- you may have to add them for installation on a DeLorean.

DMCMW Dave
12-09-2012, 12:56 PM
There are specific wires that connect the body panels to the frame. Often broken off or missing, not something to rely on for a good connection, but in general you will find that the panels are grounded. You are correct, nothing relies on this as a conductive path, it is done to prevent static buildup on the panels.

Bill Robertson's Sock Puppet #1

For accuracy: body panels are not tied directly to the frame (it's not as though you have to undo a bunch of body panel wires to separate the frame from the body). Panels are tied to each other, then via the single passenger A pillar wire mentioned above to one of the dashboard hold down bolts, then to the blower motor, then via the blower motor's ground to the rear bulkhead bolt/frame.

I'll disagree with that one. 15365

Actually you do. There is one of these wires at each side of the rear of the car. Front fenders are grounded to the harness at the RH windshield corner and then with small wires (usually rusted away) via the hood that tie the panels together and the windshield surround. Door is grounded via the internal wiring harness. The only panel without a specific ground wire is the roof T-panel, but ut generally makes a physical contact with the rear quarter panels.

None of which has anything to do with Cabin Lighting fixtures.

Nice to know!

I was wondering what this wire was. It's located at the drivers side windshield/fender. Normally it's tucked underneath but, I pulled it out for the pic.
Being that it's a braided unshielded wire I figured ground but, couldn't figure out why it was there.

I'll bet what you are seeing is the same - the ones that are connected to the harness are black wiring, the ones that you call "shielded" are a braided wire but there is no inside coaxial wire, it's just a braded flat wire for some reason.

Just a very thin ground strap?

Or more correctly, they are just bonding the panel to the windscreen trim to eliminate static.

Update!
Has anyone seen/used the dome light from a Volkswagen Jetta? The Jetta has two of these, one on each side in the back seat. So far, it’s a perfect fit! Looks like I won’t need to modify the headliner, since it’s the exact same size, and the depth is slightly shallower. I thought the wire connection might be too large, but it looks like I got lucky with that as well. It also uses the same festoon bulb as the Delorean:
http://www.16908.info/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/012713_1251_ExploringLi5.jpg
http://www.16908.info/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/012713_1251_ExploringLi6.jpg

The headliner fabric I bought is darker than the Jetta light’s gray plastic. I don’t know if I should attempt to paint plastic black, get different headliner fabric, or leave it alone. Thoughts?

For the rear of the cabin, I found this light in a Saab 900. It features a bigger festoon bulb than the stock light, which I would replace with an LED. It only has one connection, so I would only use it in courtesy mode, and lose the map light function. I also like how it’s shaped like the parcel shelf. I’m not too concerned that it doesn’t match the front light. It's fairly shallow, but it looks like I might need to dremel off some plastic too fit the tight spot underneath the window:

I’m going to attempt to repair and recover my trim board above the parcel shelf, due to its poor condition.

The headliner fabric I bought is darker than the Jetta light’s gray plastic. I don’t know if I should attempt to paint plastic black, get different headliner fabric, or leave it alone. Thoughts?

Looks fantastic except for the doors... paint it!

I'm kinda jumping the gun on this since they are not yet installed in the car... but I'm really happy with the way they turned out, so here are some updates. Painted (or dyed?) with SEM Landau Black:

Big improvement for me. Little more modern, and the LED light is brighter.

Looking very nice! Adds a little bit of a modern touch but doesn't look out of place.

Does that LED have the switching regulator on it? You can tell by the existing capacitor and inductor (black cylinders) soldered on the back side. The switching regulators do not work with my dome light unit.

Those look like regular resistor current limiting so they should work with my dome unit.

Those switching regulators prevent me from detecting when the lights are powered on or off. They also do not dim very well.

I just couldn't get the module to stop blinking all the lights... Then again, I am missing the glove box light.

Well I think I accomplished my goal. In my opinion, the lights look great, and they cost less than this light (http://www.autopartsway.com/PartDetails.cfm?W0133-1628874/HEL/) that Farrar found, and a DMCH NOS unit (currently $74.95). I'm pretty proud of this.[/CODE]

What year VW Jetta for the interior light?

According to this auction, it's a 98-05, found in a Beetle, Passat, Jetta, or Golf

29275

See if you can get one from the junkyard, and clip off the wiring harness. Otherwise it's *another* $10 on ebay:

It's definitely my best "find" to date. I've gotten a few compliments from other Delorean owners.

Hey that really looks nice.

another alternative is from several older Peugeot, for example 205.

Fits great and the regular position is - on with doors open.

Did you paint the light module or are they also available in black? All the ones I saw on ebay were beige. Looks really nice, in any event. I have Porsche 928 lights in mine and they look original, rocking fore and aft to switch modes - but they feel fragile and are definitely not as slick as those VW lights.

I carefully disassembled, prepped, and painted (or dyed?) it with SEM Landau Black. The original color was a light gray, and would probably look great if left original with those symbols. However that door ajar symbol needs to be a side profile with a gullwing ;)

Picked up two of these and they work great! Got the lights and pigtails for $10 each. And they fit perfectly! Just ordered my LEDs from Hong Kong and I'll be good to go. I was hoping to leave the factory grey finish...I liked the little symbols, but the light grey is too light so I'm more than likely to paint them like you did. Thanks again for the leg work on this one!!!

Any changes planned to the light in the engine bay?

EdR5150
08-25-2014, 12:38 AM
I hope to see some pics once you're done with the dome lights!

As for the engine bay, I considered many options, and bought a few cheap LED fixtures. I've abandoned all those ideas in favor of using the stock fixture with a 48 LED panel. Some people have installed a second stock fixture on the left side, which helps brighten and balance the compartment. Right now, my engine compartment looks kinda rough, so I'm going to spend money elsewhere on the car, and purposely keep the compartment dim.
