A1 Window Regulators - Product Update Information

Hey folks,

If you're purchased the window regulators from A1 (http://www.a1electric.com/catalog/cat_delorean.htm) in the past, you'll recall they were VERY reasonably priced at $319.00 for BOTH the left and right units, shipped out the door to anywhere in the US. They are THE place to get your window regulators, hands down.

Last week I went to the A1 website to order another set for 2510 only to see they were now listed at $470.00 for a pair. That's a heck of an increase. I sent them an email just to double check there wasn't an error on the website. I even doubled checked my receipts from 3205's restoration to make sure I wasn't going crazy. Sure enough, the price had indeed increased to $470.00 for the pair. After a couple emails back and forth with the good people at A1, I came to speak with Riki over the phone. Riki told me they held the prices at $319 as long as they could but at some point the increase had to be made.

But wait, I'm not done! Riki mentioned he was aware of our forum and grateful for the customers we send their way, so if you're looking for window regulators, call A1, ask for Riki and he'll work out a deal with you. I got off the phone with Riki this morning and he gave me a SUBSTANTIAL discount... like, really substantial. Not $319, but also a far cry from $470.00.

Bottom line? Yes they have become more expensive but if you need these parts for your DeLorean, A1 still offers the best deal in town, you just have to CALL them and ask for Riki. He's even asked me to pass along this information, to call him directly.

They ARE the ones the vendors sell IIRC. I'm pretty sure DMC gets theirs from A1.

Edit - J, i forgot to add they go in "fairly" easily.

It just so happens that the plugs don't match. There are also physical fit issues. But they are all there is.

Damn, I danced around getting a set of these for a while since my motors are beginning to slow and have the ratchet/popping sound at the upper limit. Guess this is what happens when you wait too long :frown:

I used this video last spring when I installed the A1 pair. Without it, or installation instructions from a DMC vendor (direct from A1); you'll go insane unless you've done it before. I guess I got them at a great time, for still the lower price as of April or May.

So does anyone know what the differences between the units from A1 directly and the vendors is? I love our vendors but the price difference is too much to ignore if there isn't a dramatic advantage to the vendor units. Things like mounting brackets (if necessary) being included would count in my book. Or the electrical connectors - are they direct drop in from DMC or DPI and require harness mods from A1 or something?

Because I was out for a drive today and thought "I know my regulator is failing but it's nice out, one more time won't hurt it..." - just as the window disappeared inside the door forever. Sigh. ;)

Thanks guys. I know the vendor units are the A1 ones, but I didn't know if they included anything special that might be required; brackets, connectors, etc. :) I'm always one for patronizing the vendors (I get my oil filters all the way from Crystal Lake even though I can get them a mile away from my house!) but in this case I might have to drop Dave's name and save a few bucks. I just got my old regulator out and it is majorly screwed up.

Just got off the phone with Riki, who definitely remembered Dave and definitely made good on his promise to show his appreciation for the DMCTalk community. My new motors should be here Monday!

Side note: when I took the old one out (piece of cake by the way) I discovered the highlighted bracket piece was not attached to anything. I don't have any idea where it should have been connected. I assume I will need to attach the new one to the door when it comes... anyone know where it should go? It isn't clear in the parts diagrams.

Hey Jon that's great! It will make more sense when your new ones arrive. Takes a bit of fiddling to get them in there but it's not that bad at all.

Take the time to tape all of the stainless edges before you start jamming your hands in there. Well worth the time spent.

Thanks :) You don't happen to know where that mystery stud towards the top of the tube is supposed to bolt, do ya :) I am guessing that the lack of support up top probably didn't help keep the original plastic elbow from shattering so I'd like to make sure the same doesn't strain isn't put on the new ones.

If you reference Martins Video posted earlier. At about 1:25 to 1:35 into it you will see the Tube Support plate (w/bolt) for the NEW A1 unit attached to the Inner door Grab handle bracket.

It isn't that one I don't think. There were 2 studs - one at the elbow that would line up with the grab handle, and this one was on the tube about 3/4 way up the door.

The A1 and OE units are apples and oranges. Do you have the new units yet? As I recall there is not a another tab bracket farther up the tube on the A1 unit. The other attach point is the drop glass attachment 2 hole tab

These units worked well for me, The fit is a bit... "different" however they DO fit, hold securely, and work fine.

Got my driver's side regulator in tonight no problem. The fit is absurd to say the least, but ultimately secure and functions perfectly. Only took about an hour to get it installed, secured and working. Tomorrow I'll put the door back together and call it a victory!

Make sure to pull the front marker lens and check for clearance between the motor housing and door skin while the motor is operating prior to reassembly.
