Quick question on rear calipers

Hi,

I've tried searching the forum but couldn't find a good answer. Im planning on purchasing rear calipers from rock auto which are the one's that crossover to a Jaguar. I was wondering if you can still use Delorean rear pads or would I have to purchase Jaguar rear pads? Im assuming that the calipers are pretty similar and bolt on the same with no modifications? I do know that the piston is smaller. Also, whoever is using these calipers, how do you like them?

Is there a particular reason why you are replacing your calipers in the first place? They are easily rebuildable with seal kits from your favorite vendor, or the rebuild kits are even cheaper at NAPA auto parts.

Unless you've cracked the caliper housing or something and the old ones are completely junk you can easily rebuild your calipers.

Worst case the pistons might be pitted from rust, but replacing pistons as needed is cheaper than replacing the whole caliper.

Seal kits are available from the normal vendors, ot you can find them at napa. They were out of stock at my local store, but they could order them for around 10 bucks per caliper kit.

Napa p/n's are 667 (front) and 989 (rear)

If you are looking to restore the finish of the calipers to their original yellow zinc coating there are plenty of places around that can clean and replate them for you.

If you would rather not rebuild for whatever the reason don't turn in your old giring parts as cores. Sell them to someone here who wants OEM parts.

Well I figured since I replaced the front calipers I should probably also replace the rears as well since their original and probably rusted on the inside. But yea I'll consider the option of rebuilding them since its a cheaper alternative but I just have to make sure its something I can do myself or let a shop rebuild them for me.

Rebuilding the calipers is a pretty easy job. Just 4 bolts to split each caliper half and two long screw drivers to pry the pistons out. If the inner bore of the caliper is rusty that's not a problem since it's not a sealing surface. The rubber ring that seats inside the groove of the inner bore is what actually seals against the piston. If your pistons are rusted and pitted then they'll need to be replaced, but they're much cheaper than a full caliper replacement. Hervey sells stainless replacement pistons, otherwise DMCH has the stock steel OEM parts.

If for some reason you do decide to replace the calipers with the Jaguar crossover parts please don't turn in your DeLorean calipers as a core to rock auto. The'll most likely get scrapped as an 'incorrect' core anyway and there will be one less rebuildable set of parts for other DeLorean owners to have refurbished. One of the vendors may offer to buy your old parts and then at least they'll stay in the DeLorean community. There's really no reason to completely replace them though unless they are cracked or no longer rebuildable. If for some reason you think it's beyond your skill level you can always send them out to one of the vendors and they can do it for you.

I sent my calipers off to DMCMW get re-plated after I took everything apart and they came back looking good as new

It's definitely easy. These are pretty primitive calipers and can be easily split and reassembled by a home mechanic without worry.

wow thanks for catching that. Yes, the fronts are 667 and the rears are 989. The front braked calipers have an internal passage that connects the two halves (and require that small additonal o-ring) and the rears have an external crossover tube that connects the two halves so there is no o-ring sealed internal passage.

Doing brakes is pretty easy and you don't need a lot of special and expensive tools. Some things you should have are a flare nut wrench for the brake line fittings, and a hone to clean the insides of the calipers. A "One Man" brake bleeder kit is nice too. None of this stuff is expensive and the money you save on just 1 brake job more than covers the cost of the tools. Compressed air is handy to remove the pistons, especially if they are stuck. If you want to make the calipers look pretty Eastwood.com has paints you can use. The most important rule is to keep the parts CLEAN!
