Trickle charging through the jump leads

Is it safe to hook up a trickle charger through the hot point in the engine bay?

Yep...it goes straight to the hot post on the starter and on to battery (+).

I always used the jump terminal until I made up a cig lighter plug to charge a battery. Those plugs usually have a 5 or 10 amp fuse in them so you can not charge more than the fuse rating.

If you have a battery master switch you must make sure it is on before charging through that terminal.

Thanks all. I plan on keeping the battery maintained during winter and its a lot easier to access the hot point rather than dig the battery out. I do not have a cutoff switch but I do plan on installing one this winter with a removable key that I can reach from the driver seat.

So a follow on to that, is it also safe to use a normal battery charger through the same post? Ground to engine and + to the pickup post on the passenger side pontoon wall. I have this one: http://www.sears.com/diehard-platinum-microprocessor-controlled-battery-charger-engine-starter/p-02871227000P?prdNo=9&blockNo=9&blockType=G9 - it has settings for slow charge, high speed and 'start engine' mode. I've just been removing the battery every time I want to use it, but that's annoying.

Yep.
It's made to boost with and you are never going to have more amperage on the circuit than when boosting it off to crank it with a dead battery (except a solid dead short, but then it wouldn't matter which of the two you used anyway....).
