Thanks for the heads up. I ordered some parts week before last and didn't notice the price changes. Guess I need to start comparing prices again. Unfortunately, most parts come out of Houston no matter who you order from. Good time to remember we have multiple vendors.
That 10% off from DMC for spending $1500 in 12 months isn't sounding like such a good deal anymore. Guess I'll start calling Rob (PJ Gradys) to compare prices on any kits I order going forward.

I just received my louvre support buffer which was $49.95 a few weeks ago, now $61.xx. Overall looks like prices are up at least 20% or more. Although compared to other parts prices I've experienced its not too bad. I've had some sticker shock at the Harley Davidson parts counter.

I believe what you are seeing is parts which are not being reproduced and are coming out of the original inventory have increased in price by 25%.
I ran a couple parts I knew the prices of and compared that to what the price is now, and if a part has gone up, it went up 25%. Not everything went up though. To me it looks like parts which are from the original lot from the 80s have gone up, but if you are looking at a reproduced part price, that has not gone up.

I'll be going EFI/Carb ...
Unusual hybrid, but not without precedent:
Nearly five years ago an owner in Pennsylvania was trying without success to get a Megasquirt conversion to work. A plan was hatched to temporarily replace his K-Jet manifold and mixture unit with a carbureted manifold & carburetor *AND* leave the EFI plumbing in place (injectors, fuel rails, etc). He would simply swap pumps in the tank and connect them appropriately in the engine compartment to switch between systems. When its bowl was empty, the carburetor would serve as a throttle body assembly for the EFI. When their fuel rails were empty, the EFI injectors would serve as head bung plugs for the carburetor.
His long term plan was to go EFI exclusively, but this would at least have allowed him to drive the car with the carburetor until Megasquirt was figured out (the EFI conversion had taken his car out of service for more than a year, and he was very discouraged). He sold the vehicle before this plan could be put into effect.

Everyone's cost of doing business has gone up. Most of our increases will go into effect January first as well. Everything is going up between 18-27% at Dpi. You can blame this economy.

I fight our suppliers constantly to keep the price down. But in the end I need to look out for the companies best interests. The cost of doing business is rising quickly and the end result is a shift in the owner demographics within this community. Cylinder heads are 1500.00 a piece now for example. Complete engine packages are starting at 11k. It's not a cheap car to maintain correctly anymore.

So is it a bad idea to get a Delorean, if the plan is both as a DD and somewhat, if little, of an investment vs. buying something a few years old, driving the daylights out if it and then having something worth nothing in a 10 year span, vs. a Delorean which could be worth at least $5k if properly maintained and looks well-maintained..
What is the cost of maintenance on a D over a year (if an owner who is mechanically inclined does most the work)?

I can’t really say that I didn’t expect the prices to start rising over the years, I just wish my pay check would have started rising with them.
I can understand all the reasons why they are going up. After all we can’t expect prices to stay the same forever, especially when everything else is on the rise. That being said, I do have a feeling one day these cars will only be affordable for the more wealthy owners, which will sadly force me out of ownership. I hope I’m wrong or that I win the lottery.

My thinking is that if prices are reasonable people will spend more benefitting the economy. When prices are higher, people will most likely spend on what is only needed and not splurge for that extra item (e.g. flux capacitor, or ss door sills). In turn this holding on to money will only hurt DeLorean vendors. But I do understand prices have to rise, but it should be at a realistic rate,[political] Now this cannot be considered political because I am Canadian, and what do I know, I'm sitting here in my igloo, waiting to get electricity.

I politely disagree. I see how people go nuts spending on this car; I am no exception to that. People will just find other ways to "soften the blow" and they'll keep spending. It's either that, watch the car become a lawn ornament, or sell it.

Price increases of this sort of percentage are pretty outrageous... The "economy" is not a very good excuse. What's the real reason? Someone has to make more boat payments, or wants another summer house is far more likely. All such a large and noticeable price increase is going to do is make everyone in the DeLorean community angry. If prices needed to be raised due to a lack of profitability, or for want of higher profits, or supply running low Fine... But over time, and a more reasonable amount would prevent such outrage from the only people that buy from "DMC"

With such a increase from the vendors who provide quality parts for our cars, a lot of folks will begin to seriously consider purchasing alternate parts. Lists of cross over parts exist now and a lot of these parts are available at your local parts store. Now some might say the parts are not as "good" as the vendor parts but the fact is if they are significantly less expensive, people will buy them. It's too bad because everyone loses in that case.

Well he's kinda right Chris. As Stewie Griffin would say, "we're an odd family" and I mean that in the best possible way. If business in the DMC community were standard like it is in the Jeep or Ford world I experience, we wouldn't have such an endless stream of free help like we get from our favourite vendors be it tech sessions or online advice or time on the phones when we are in a bind. Maybe it gets taken for granted but I don't think so; we gush over the customer service we get from our favourite vendors and we reward them in return with customer loyalty and our praise. That in my mind is not "standard" business.
We should have been told about the price increases, out of respect if nothing else. I personally would have made different purchasing choices for my restoration of 2510 which is currently on pieces. Maybe I wouldn't have even taken on the project. Do we loose DMC's BRP? What determines increases? Which products?
There is only 8500 of us at best and all we ask for is transparency in our little community.

I believe what you are seeing is parts which are not being reproduced and are coming out of the original inventory have increased in price by 25%.
Looks like you are spot on. I still have thousands of dollars worth of part numbers and prices noted down that I've replaced and have just run a crapload of the part numbers into the DMCH site - it IS all the "NOS" stock that has exploded in price by 25%, all the reproduction/improved parts are unchanged.
The order I was in the middle of doing with MidWest at the very time this occurred Julee was awesome enough to look after me with - but admittedly had I known prices were going to jump by this much I would have quickly made a couple more big-ass orders. Snooze you loose I guess.
It happened early last week - pricing I had grabbed that weekend had changed by last Wednesday.
I've checked back over my notes and correspondence - looks like the price increase occurred sometime between Monday 2nd December and Friday 7th December, a week earlier than I first thought.
We'll have to see how this plays out. I've always been of the idea that the restoration costs of this automobile if it is to be done right is/was cost prohibitive and that was under the old prices. Sadly this development will increase the value and the attractiveness of parting a DeLorean out. It will also sting owners of the average 15K DeLorean (Rolling restoration if you will). On the up side It should have some positive effect on top notched cars that are together cosmetically and mechanically and are well maintained.

If I'm running a business, I'm not telling my customers about price increases until after they are in effect. Otherwise, I'd expect a mad rush while the old costs are still in place and a cold spell after the price increase. Not a good strategy if you're trying to make it out there.
It's a bummer that the costs are going up, no doubt. But I'm sure they anticipated the owners reaction (as seen on this forum) and took that into consideration.

I do run a business, all, again, all my suppliers would let me know of any price increase and I will notify my customers. That is common practice among respectable businesses. Exception would be parts made out of metals that price change everyday (like lead), but then price changes up and down accordingly.

This is a moot point since apparently none of the outsourced "improved" parts went up in price. The 25% increase was only on the existing supply of NOS parts. Prices for these parts are not affected by outside suppliers, raw material costs, etc.

I had some old parts spreadsheets that listed the previous DMCH prices so I entered in the new prices from the website and calculated the price increase percentage. Here is the comparison for the front suspension parts:
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=15547&d=1355935241
As others have stated for most NOS items there was a price increase of 25%.
Hardware prices seem to be all over the map with some prices remaining the same and others raising 50-100%
Contrary to my previous post there were a few 'improved' outsourced parts that went up in price as well.
...Over the past year I've put at least 5k in my car as part of a chassis restoration project so feel pretty lucky that I didn't wait another year to start. :nervous:

There was a Forbes article a few years back that talked about this and how they were able to pay off the original loan used to purchase the parts awhile ago. This means that aside from fixed annual costs (storage, insurance... which was somewhere between $50K-100K), they make 100% profit from NOS parts. So while I could expect minor increases over the years to adjust for inflation or individual increases when particular parts start becoming rare, this massive increase looks suspicious. It is their parts and they can set prices as they see fit, but this only makes me want to purchase elsewhere.
I wonder how long it will be before John at specialtauto.com decides to advertise about how many of his parts are suddenly so much cheaper then his main competition?

Here is a real example of how such price hikes affect the average owner. I have a 81 that has a "bad" engine. I was planning to replace the engine with the correct original type power plant. Now I will look around for other options such as a non stock engine. It really gets down to what one should spend on a car that can be bought for $20,000-$25,000 in great shape. Maybe we just need to raise the car price to the $40,000-$50,000 range!
As more cars are parted out just for the money and the current owners consider modified restorations, the number of original cars will continue to decrease and only be found in Museums.

This is an interesting comment... In theory if NOS parts are now suddenly worth 25% more, that would mean that a complete, running and driving DeLorean should be worth more. Not 40-50k, but at least SOME measurable amount over yesterday's prices. If a parts car suddenly jumped in value from 5k to 7k in for the value of its parts, I would imagine that would translate to a similar jump in value for good condition car.
I'm not sure how that works in reality since an overnight jump in NOS parts value won't immediately translate into a higher selling price for a complete car. Over the next few months or years though as people attempt to buy or sell there will be a greater appreciation for a car that is already in good condition. I would expect to see the sales/asking prices go up.
Maybe this is partly the reason for the price increases from DMCH? To increase the market value of the cars overall?

Does anyone know what the status of the DMC-EV concept is? It was predicted by some (myself included) that if the DMC-EV concept failed to lure enough buyers willing to spend 100K on a "new DeLorean" that DMC (Texas) would then resort to broad price increases on the NOS parts inventory as a result to recoup and pass on it's losses on developmental costs of the EV concept to You and I the 'DeLorean Owner' and or vendor.

I have no idea where the EV concept currently is, but I can't imagine that it's going all that well... Even the big auto makers like Nissan severely overestimated demand for a full electric vehicle with the current range capabilities. This article on the Leaf is pretty interesting.
http://nlpc.org/stories/2012/12/19/nissan-admits-arrogance-sales-taxpayer-subsidized-leaf
The quote that struck me:
"an October 2011 survey of 13,000 consumers from 17 countries found that “no more than 4 percent of consumers are satisfied with what electric vehicle manufacturers have made available.” Of the many shortcomings, respondents said the EVs’ limited range was a top concern. Most said they wanted a capability to go 300 miles, which is far beyond the capacity of any EV on the market. "
Of that 4% that deem the ~100 mile range of an EV to be acceptable, what fraction of a percentage of that would be interested in a 30 year old niche car like the DeLorean? Then ask $100K on top of that (3x the cost of a Leaf) and see how many DeLorean EV's they sell. Is there a single person here on DMCTalk that would seriously consider buying one?
If I were DMCH I'd be 'pulling the plug' on the EV and cutting my losses. Maybe in 10 years when technology has advanced and range capabilities have increased it may be worth investing in an electric DeLorean.
If the publicity and attention was what DMCH was after then they've achieved their goal...but it seems insane to actually go into production with this concept given how the market has responded to other EV's.

Just because Houston raises its prices doesn't make our cars worth more. Reason being Houston is using its hold on the price market and can (within reason) raise prices at their discretion.
The DeLorean market is a different story, since most cars are in private hands, when they hit the market it's for a variety of reasons, more often than not, the seller needs cash, and is willing to take a hit, so they snap on the first good solid offer. The other part is buyer demand. Since DeLoreans are generally kept as toys by their owners, the cars are sought after as toys. The demand simply doesn't out do the cars turnover rate. They're always on eBay!!

"Business is business" may be true, but there's good business and bad business. Maybe DMCH doesn't care about offending current owners because they have little choice on where to get parts. Having said that, what's the worst case, that an owner sells their car to avoid the price hikes (of which many more are coming for sure)? That only helps DMCH because the new owner will only see the current prices and just has to accept them as the market for the car they're buying.
This does make me ponder about what I'm going to do with my car and parts car. Making them both parts cars and getting another may be a better option at this point.

yess there was just a parts price increase, the first time in close to 10
years. It was not on everything, actually just mostly rare hard-to-reproduce
parts. I think people realize that costs of business keep rising and as the
rare parts run out it costs a lot to reproduce them. If you compare DeLorean
parts prices to similar items on other 30-year-old relatively exotic cars
they are still pretty reasonable
David T

The price of parts does have an affect on the values of the cars. If it costs more in parts to fix a car up from being a non-runner to say condition #3 for instance, then any car that is a #3 is worth that much more. And all other conditions accordingly. You can complain about what parts cost but if there was a particular part you needed and it was no longer available (let's use a driver's torsion bar as an example) now price is not quite as important as availability. If you maintain your car it is always cheaper in the long run than to have to fix one up. If you recall we had a thread a while back about keeping a Delorean going for $500 a year. It is doable if it is already in good shape. As an owner you should be budgeting at least that amount for maintenance every year. Some years you may spend less and others maybe more, it averages out.

If you recall we had a thread a while back about keeping a Delorean going for $500 a year.
It looks like it isn't possible to spend just $500 a year on maintenance. This guy spent a lot more money and documented it.
http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?2675-How-to-maintain-your-Delorean-for-less-than-500-a-year-and-put-10-000-miles-on-it&highlight=maintain+%24500

yess there was just a parts price increase, the first time in close to 10
+1
Many NOS parts that were in seeming great supply 10 years ago are being depleted. A good example would be luggage racks. I know for a fact that their are very few left in DMCH's inventory hence the Giant price increase. Ironically, when this inventory was still owned by KAPAC They had hundreds of them and NO demand. They were literally giving them away for the whopping price of $15 during special club events. James has publicly stated they will not be reproduced when the supply is gone.
Prices have not gone up significantly for many years. Perhaps they should have just like every other business raises prices a few percent every year then we would not be surprised by the large increase. No one wants prices to go up but that's not reality. The Only price INCREASES I would prefer to see are on Items currently priced at $0.00.

You did not expect all parts to be still at 1980's prices?
Keeping stock is costly, I see it in my business every day where customers screem for last minute delivery (and blame us if the slightrest delay casued production flow trouble)
So it is normal the price has to follow the market, but I also agree this price increse is heavy in one time. I'm having a very hard time to increase the price with 5% to my customers, with the constant thread the competition is not. I jsust hope this does not mean DMC is in Financial trouble.
I also agree that it is normal DMC does not announce this price increase in advance, it would trigger the wrong reactions.
But I have 2 conclusions.
- Some owners will pospone service to the cars or use cheaper alternative parts, in each case not benefitting the health of the car.
- The moment my perfect running Delorean in great condition will be worth so much more in parts, I'll be parting her out if I need money someday.
Some Deloreans will likely be put in storage awaiting better times, that is what I would do if I had to.

I don't think luggage racks is a good example, as I doubt there is such a high demand on these. Plus I doubt it would be hard to replicate them.

Everyone's cost of doing business has gone up. Most of our increases will go into effect January first as well. Everything is going up between 18-27% at Dpi. You can blame this economy.
So when the economy recovers you will then lower your prices back down again?? :neener:

As I stated elsewhere on this matter. Everything is in regards to nos parts. Other increases will be subtle in comparison. I was expressing a increase in nos pricing which dmc has made and we followed suit on as being done due to economy reasons. Not many sources for nos components. When we run through our current stock pile we will replenish at the 25% increased cost. After shipping costs it is 28% on our end roughly.

Several years ago back on the DML, a guy named Sonny V would post every now and then. Most of his posts were about his experience at DMCH and he would always praise them for their work. One day he made a post, but at the end was James' signature. When somebody pointed this out, all his posts suddenly disappeared from the archive (posters could remove their own posts if they wanted to, so he most likely did it). Fortunately others kept their own set of archives and after checking out the IP addresses, it was discovered James was posting under a different name to advertise DMCH.
Needless to say there was a big backlash against DMCH for this as it was very misleading and bad form to post under different identities. Steven posted an apology after awhile explaining that it was done with his approval.

To our DeLorean community:
Our first aim is to please our customers and help maintain a strong DeLorean market.
We have avoided raising our prices for as long as possible.
In the past ten years we have only instituted two price increases on our DeLorean parts that were purchased from KAPAC back in 1997. It is important to note that when DeLorean Motor Company purchased these parts in 1997, we immediately reduced prices on a range of these parts. The new prices today are still mostly lower than the prices that KAPAC was selling to the DeLorean community in 1997.
Furthermore, when we have introduced “reproduction” parts to replace exhausted NOS(New Old Stock) parts we have in most cases been able to maintain or reduce prices on those parts.
However, our business operating costs have risen significantly over the past six years and we can no longer put off the inevitable. For example, our health insurance and employee related benefits have risen over 200%. Our commercial insurance has risen 34%. Our mailing, office and shipping supplies, inbound freight and shipping costs have risen 64%.
While we are not happy about having to raise these prices, we are confident you will continue to be pleased with our diligent efforts to maintain a strong, high quality, DeLorean market.
If some of you wish to discuss this price increase further please feel free to call me.
We look forward to our continued business together.

Thanks for stepping up, Stephen.
I personally appreciate your response and understand the reasoning. Quite honestly I am ok with paying increased pricing on certain parts if it means you are able to maintain your employees and their access to benefits. There have been many other high profile business owners who have come under fire recently for cutting hours, benefits and jobs for many of the same reasons you mentioned -increased costs for benefits etc. while the CEOs still take home million dollar pay checks. Your decision to rais prices could not have been easy but the choice to cut benefits and staffing should be even more difficult.
Thanks for helping to keep our cars on the road
Cheers
Steven

Couldn't have said it better. Thanks, Stephen, for taking the time to address us personally. While price increases are never something anyone looks forward to, it's refreshing to hear a company trying to retain the quality of life for its employees. There are so many companies doing the opposite these days.

Welp... If I need another passenger side torsion bar, I'll be buying it from DMC. - it should be obvious why. But I will shop... if I can't find a better price on a part they don't hold the title of having the only one available, I will still buy from "DMC" - If I can find a better deal... My customer loyalty went away with this sort of a massive increase.
