Howdy Folks,
Yesterday, I treated 10718 to an oil change (I probably put less than 500 miles on her since her last change, but like to do it twice a year anyway). I used a brand name oil, but was wondering if anyone has used Oreilly Auto Parts' store-branded oil. It's very well priced, but I don't want to use it if it is low quality.
Thoughts?

DMC recommends Conventional Castrol 20W50, so that's what I've always used. I don't know much about oil, but name-brand stuff seems like it'd be worth the extra cost.

I used it on my last oil change, pours the same, has kept a clean look. I keep check on it often. I figure oils are probably like gasoline, all comes from the same refineries anyway.

Personally I think an oil change after 500 miles is excessive. Also I use mobile 1 with the LS1 and used mobile 1 with the PRV.

My understanding is that oil will tend to break down after a few months, regardless of miles. So I change 10718's oil twice/year despite being seldom driven.
Mobil 1 on a PRV? I thought that synthetic in an older engine could cause leaks, no?

I never ran into any issues with the PRV. Used it for 10 years. I dont believe it really lubricates or anything better, I just think it lasts longer. (The LS1 has to have mobile 1)
Oil can begin to break down over time but the process is significantly slower than the breakdown that happens from the engine running. The greatest damage and contamination to the oil comes from the cylinder blow by. 500miles+6 months is very different from 5000miles+6 months.
Still, to each their own, it's all just my opinion. :)

My 2005 Corvette with the LS2 engine only recommended Mobil 1 5w-30w oil. My Mercedes 500sl also recommends Mobil 1 oil. Why would you argue with some of the most expensive engines in the world? They didn't even have synthetic oils in 1981 so they couldn't recommend it. As engineering advances oils and fluids who are we to argue with very expensive and advanced technologies. IMO it is better to use the most advanced products that we can find including Dexron coolants. 8)

Twice per year is probably overkill on 10718, but it makes me feel better, and also gives me a reason to get under the hood every so often. :-) In my case, switching to Mobil 1 would really be overkill since I'm changing the oil roughly every 1000 miles.

I agree with Nick on this one. It's heat and contaminants that break oil down, not time. Oh I still change my oil often enough, but I wouldn't change it in three months unless I had more than a thousand or two miles on it.
Have always had good luck with Penzoil. Myself and family members have had many cars go well over 100k, and some over 200k, all with Penzoil, and changing the oil & filter every 3-5k miles (not restricted to three month intervals).

I always use Castrol Magnatec 10w40 in my car, along with the DCUK (http://www.deloreaneurotec.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=1175) recommended (Mahle OC 460 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/MAHLE-OC-460-Oil-Filter-/180902284127)) oil filter, and change it every 2500-3000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
