How to remove the lock from storage lid #108004?

I am replacing the carpeting throughout my car and the storage lid behind the driver's seat is next. I need to know how to remove the lock. I was able to remove the tumbler but I don't see how the ring (second pic) that holds it in place can be removed.

There is a clip behind the door holding it in place. You need to carefully compress it and back it off to release its hold on the rest of the unit.

I assume it is somewhere under the black gunk. I'll strip it and look for it. Thanks.

It's that black metal clip. The gunk is at the base of it. It's like a 2 pronged fork IIRC.

Unfortunately someone put that black goo on the cylinder. You'll need to scrape it off then pull the U-clip to release the cylinder body.

Yep, you were absolutely correct. The black gunk turned out to be a bunch of rock hard... schellack... but once I had chipped it all away, what was left was the prong that slid out nicely. Problem solved.
