What does "LK Sport Coupe" mean?

Hmmm. The "LK" probably means nothing or is some mistake in translation (from Chinese).

The molded-in name on the bottom of that Sunstar model as well as the color label on the top of its mounting pedestal says "1981 De Lorean LK".

Go figure.

Not just Sunstar, but the National Automobile Museum in Reno, NV labels it an "LK Coupe."

Thanks for that reference. Now it gets more interesting. Have not heard of the LK moniker before this thread - and the Sunstar model. While there is precious little, if any, factory literature or DMC corporate listing of the commonly-used "DMC-12" model name there is little or none that refers to the car as the "LK Coupe" by DeLorean. Have been to see the gold car in Reno long ago and did not recall it being listed that way but there it is on the image David shares. As of 2006 their display chart did not have "LK Coupe" on it, at least not prominently. Thanks for catching that. 2006 photo of the Gold D - with its plaque - in Reno follows:

Interesting, so maybe they added the "LK" more recently. Perhaps as a result of the Sunstar model. It is odd that there seems to be no record of "LK" prior to the Sunstar model. Maybe the museum saw the model and didn't vet the name before updating their records? They have a lot of cars, it would be difficult for the curator to know everything about each one, though admittedly getting the name wrong would be a large oversight.

I recall reading a theory that it was a misappropriation of "UK".

I wondered that too. I have this LK Sunstar model and never knew what it meant either. My guess is some lost in translation piece that went unnoticed until they were already being produced.

I googled this question and found this link:

Now, it's just another thread on the internet, but the last poster makes this comment:

With mercedes, all the cars that have "LK" are sports cars.

Perhaps back in the day something along these lines led to the confusion?
