This has been done in Germany where there's no speed limit.

I've got DMCHs 140mph speedometer and I've seen 1258 get to 110, but I never pushed the limit of the 85mph one though. Fastest I had the stock set up to was about 70, the car really seems to like 70 as a cruising speed . She felt really good and stable too at 110, not like my 280z.

There aren't any roads safe enough around here to aim for 88 but I've caught Red doing over 70 in a 55 a few times. She gets away from me more than any other car I own. I guess the ride is so smooth I really don't notice.

I know its not accurate, but I call this the "Delorean Effect". Because the car is basically one big spoiler the faster one goes, the more the car is pushed down, it feels more stable, and becomes very responsive (you guys know what I'm takin' about) It helps to have stiffer and lowered suspension for all this too. I've never driven any other car that behaves like this in a more or less stock set up, even when she was stock I could feel the difference. At 75-80, the engine seems really happy, and doesn't feel to be struggling at all.

Gotten mine to 120 here, the 110-120 range takes forever but it will do it. Most happy cursing speed for my DeLo seems to be about 80, as a kickdown to 4th at this speed gets you to about 100 in a reasonable amount of time. Normally I don't care about such things, however my Delo has attracted some pretty piss poor drivers that are a danger because they become so distracted by the car. I find it useful to maintain speeds higher than the average speed of traffic to limit gawkers, and if you get someone driving poorly, trying to keep up taking cell phone camera pictures, kickdown to 4th, accelerate as fast as you can, up shift into 5th, and then run it at 100+ for a few minutes. The average motorist won't keep up.

I had my car (manual trans, stock engine) at the strip a few years ago and it ran a 17.00 @ 80mph

I pushed both of my DeLoreans over 100 mph regularly when I owned them... I was in my late teens to mid 20s and fear didn't occur to me. A couple of years ago when I rode with Brandon Barber up to one of Darren Decker's get-togethers, Brandon pretty much drove 105 for the entire round trip. All I could think about were things like a trailing arm bolt snapping at that speed, or those infamous replacement ball joints failing. :lol: The cars certainly do feel very confidently planted at higher speeds, but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing those speeds in a car that hasn't had it's suspension gone through (all rubber bits replaced, trailing arm bolts checked/replaced, lower control arms checked/beefed up, front suspension recall performed, etc). Wow, I sound like David T! :umm:

Ugh, this is by far the worst... I ran into some guy in a bright yellow hatchback Protege that would not leave me alone a few months ago. He kept trying to get a good picture from behind me while driving. Like normal I hit the gas and put some distance between us. He tried his best to keep up and I didn't want to maintain the speed I was going so eventually he caught back up.

As he got up behind me the second time, I hit the gas again (driving in the middle lane). Sure enough he hit the gas and tried to keep up. Ontario at the moment has a controversial "50 over" law in place. It was intended to deal with street racers and the jist of it is, if you are caught doing 50 km/hr over the speed limit, you immediately lose your license and car at the side of the road. It is controversial because the traffic cop pulling you over is judge, jury, and executioner all in one and you don't get a say in the matter. It's pretty much about the biggest BS on the roads here at the moment.

I understand it not being safe doing 100 km/hr or more in a 50 km/hr zone going through town. The scary part is where most of the regular roads or highways in amongst small towns are 80 km/hr zones. Since most people hover around 95 km/hr in an 80 (some of that to do with only getting fined demerit points on your license starting at 16 km/hr over), if you come up on a guy doing say 85-90, and then quickly go around him, it is not hard at all in any car to get to 120 or so by the time you go around. So for the times where you under estimated the distance or didn't realize there are two cars you need to pass, in order to not dilly-dally, it is super easy to get to 130 km/hr. And if you are having some pretty crappy luck that day, if just over the hill comes a cruiser with the radar on, bingo, 50 over, you lose your license for a week, your car is impounded for a week minimum, and you face up to $10k in fines.

And you know the worst part? They just wrote in the paper recently about an off duty cop who was doing well over 50 over and they let him off. People caught wind of it and they went back and gave him a slap on the wrist. What do they call the police in some places? The rich man's army? This is not the number one most awesome reason to live in Canada at the moment.

Oh yea, and that's km/hr not miles. So it's about 31 miles per hour or so over in comparison. Our main highways through the cities with the concrete divider and what not are usually 100 km/hr zone (62 mph). So if I were to get to 149 km/hr (93 mph) I wouldn't want to risk much quicker for fear the DeLorean is getting towed away. So the answer to your question of burying the stock speedometer... no officer, I have never done that. I will agree that a sweet spot for cruising on these main highways is 75 mph or so. I find myself doing 55-60 mph on the regular roads mostly (well, technically I aim for about 2,500 RPM with the reliability of my angle drive).

I like what I'm hearing about the DeLorean getting more stable at higher speeds - I'll have to try it sometime. But 130mph, that's quick!

I took my D to 100 once, and the front end felt insanely unstable. Not vibrating or shimmying, just very light - Scarey actually.

My Carrera feels right at that speed, which has a similar weight distribution. 38/62

I had mine to an indicated 120mph. and it seemed to have some left in it. I also remember it being pretty stable for a 30yr old car. I only did it once and I don't think I have had it over 100 since. The thing is this is a collector car now, not a performance car. If I want performance, no need to risk my DeLorean when a 5,000 dollar used Trans Am will do just fine.

Here is the main factor anyone should consider. In most cars a wreck at 100+ mph, you have SOME chance for survival, in a DeLorean.....



PS: I have to think that mine being lowered with the Eibach suspension, performance shocks, and strut tower brace probably does better than a stock D with the front end jacked up to the moon.

Agreed. You'll note that a stock height car has an angle on the tie rods coming out of the rack when sitting still (static). Pressing down on the car will cause the tires to toe out. When a car is lowered the tie rods are level when static, so than any deviation from static causes the toe angle to to move inward.

The stock suspension with the raised front will tend to "hunker down" at speed as noted. This causes the front wheels to toe OUT, which is exactly what you don't want and will definitely make it feel "light" i.e. unstable. The only way around this on a car with stock springs is to set the toe with about 300 pounds of weight in the front end of the car (to level out the tie rod angle as if it was lowered). This will also cause some pretty aggressive front tire wear.

When the front is lowered (and properly re-aligned to the new height), movement in either up or down direction will cause the tires to toe IN more which makes things feel more stable.

I didn't think about that right away Dave. I just spoke to Julie and asked her to add me to her "Waiting for Shocks and Springs" list. You may recall, my car was lowered by the Previous Owner, (in 1981) but between that and the fact it sat for 25 years, it's too low for me. Highest speed hit by one of the DCUK members whilst on a European road trip in Germany was 135mph (verified via sat nav). Not all the cars could do this (most were topping out at 125mph), and the car that did had no greater power output on the dyno the previous summer... Work that one out.

Mine's done 4800rpm in 5th = 128mph, but that was down a hill. It might have had a bit left, but I didn't have the road left to find out. Can't say the car felt brilliant at that speed - had to straddle two lanes due to vague steering.

At high speeds the steering gets loose because of the heavy rear weight bias, not enough weight on the front, and too much air getting under the car lifting it up. Quick fix is to move the battery to the front. It will help a little. Lowering the car will also help.

This is where I get nervous. I have no problem pushing it hard through 1st-4th, but 5th is where I want to back off. After rebulding the transmission and seeing the overhung 5th, I just dont feel comfortable accelerating much at all in 5th.

I know of at least one Delorean (manual) with a custom built PRV (3.0 lower end) & (2.8 Upper K-jet Heads with custom high lift cams) that was Police radar checked @ 149 MPH and still climbing when the driver had to back off for oncoming traffic. Btw NO ticket was issued. The D owner that had the engine built, had a neighbor who was a sheriffs deputy. As the story goes the deputy dropped by the guys house one day knowing he had been building the engine for the car and asked him how fast it was. The Owner said, he didn't know. The deputy said, lets go see what it will do. They headed out to an isolated long (flat) straight stretch of rural county road in IL. and let it all hang out.

The owner of the car had the tendency of driving it hard and it eventually caught up to him. During a trip up to an Open house event at DMCMW several years back he was a few miles from the shop when he pulled away from traffic light and lost the transmission. (input shaft or coupler failed). I was there that day as witness when the car was hauled to the shop and checked over.

People tend to move around A LOT when you tie them up and put them into the trunk of a car. People also tend to die when you take them apart (which is pretty much required if you want to get a normal-sized hooker into the front cargo hold of a DeLorean). Hence, dead hookers.

See, Ron is right. The hookers don't have to be dead. In their normal line of work, you are essentially just paying for their time, so in this application you just pay them to lie in the trunk and not to move. And stop whining. If you get a super flexible one, he/she may fit in the wheelwell, though in that case he/she will weigh considerably less than 90lbs.

In fact, one of the big disadvantages of using dead hookers would be that the "effluent" will cause your frame to rust, and you will never get it out of the trunk carpet.

So I again come back to my 90lb bag of cement. And afterwards you can always erect some fence posts with it.

Isnt this law country wide? I can see it being a good law out east or in populated areas, but out west (Sask,Alta) on the TCH no way. I have been told out west they have the same laws but no big signs indicating it

What speeds are normal in the Delo for shifting (manual). My 08 Mustang GT I shift basicaly out of 1st at 10MPH, 2nd 20, 3rd 30MPh, and hit 5th about 50mph. The only time I drove my Delo was last week. Shift points way different than what I am used to, Basically I was in 4th the whole time, didnt go much over 50 or so. Ratios seem much tighter in the d vs Mustang.

Depends if you are trying to get MPG or having fun driving. If you want fun, crank the RPM up before you shift. Good MPG shift at or below 2000 RPM.

Isnt this law country wide? I can see it being a good law out east or in populated areas, but out west (Sask,Alta) on the TCH no way. I have been told out west they have the same laws but no big signs indicating it

Other Provinces may have similar laws (I really don't know), but they are Provincial laws, not Federal. Ontario introduced their version of the 50km/h over law in, I believe, 2007.

That wasn't the law in Alberta while I was living there last summer. They do still have photo radar though, but you're allowed to have a radar detector in your car. You can't have one of those in Ontario of course.

Quite often in Ontario people will drive somewhere up to about 15 km/hr over the limit. So in an 80 zone, many drive 95. Partly because even if you get caught, the fines aren't that much at the low numbers and you don't get points on your license.

Ask me how frigging pissed I was when I got a photo radar ticket in Calgary for doing 93 in an 80. I think it ended up being the better part of $100 with the "convenience" fees and whatnot. And you could see in the picture I was getting out on the TransCanada highway leaving the city and there was a concrete divider in the middle and no other cars or people around. Not like it was through a busy intersection with a nursing home on one corner and a coffee shop on the other. There is only one thing it serves a purpose for and it ain't public safety. It's a cash grab. End of story. So now I'm back in Ontario and they can keep their photo radar in Alberta.

Wow, I hear ya. I've heard rumblings about Toronto getting radar cameras. If they introduce those, there is surely going to be a massive initial increase in revenue from speeding tickets due to the general public's driving habits (ex. 93 in an 80 zone) that normally wouldn't result in a ticket.

Yea, Ontario used to have photo radar back in the 90s. They got rid of it because enough people objected to it. Oh, and what do you know. That's the only other speeding ticket I've gotten in my 22 year driving career. Both were photo radar. Honk on bo-bo, I think the expression is.
