Oil pressure sender problem

Hello everyone. I am currently in a bit of a bind. I am in the middle of changing the oil, filter, and pressure sender (gauge) on my car. I have the oil drained, filter off, and am in the middle of trying to change the sender. I began twisting it off, and it appears to have broken. The outer "half" is spinning around the inner "half" that screws into the block adapter threaded into the engine. Hopefully that makes sense the way I have described it. I cannot seem to find the proper wrench size to try to work the inner part off (I cannot see it and have tried several sizes to no avail, assuming there is even a hex portion like the new one I have here; the new one is a 14mm). Has this happened to anyone in the past? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Got it! Ended up taking a small pair of vice grips and claming down on the inner portion VERY tightly. One good crank and it was off!

I was going to mention, vice grips might be the way to go. I used to Borg-Warner for my replacement, and I believe it was a 9/16". I documented the whole thing on my blog.

As a matter of fact, your blog was what I used as a point of reference! I remembered that you had very detailed pics of the job. All was going well until that thing started spinning around on itself. I couldn't make out the size of the wrench needed to remove the inner portion (nor could I even see it due to the lack of clearance...). Upon getting it off, it turned out to be something on the order of 23mm (not exactly sure, 21 is the biggest I have), which 1. I don't have, and 2. probably wouldn't have been able to squeeze in there anyway given the amount of space and clearance I had. Sooooo...vice grips were the way to go! The replacement I used is a 14mm, so if I ever have to remove it, life will be much easier!

I'm glad to hear my blog helped you along! I think you'll be real happy with the replacement. I updated it with shots of the gauge working with the Borg Warner replacement. I'll also put in an update regarding taking the old unit off. It looks like it could be better wrenching it off from the actual connector rather than the unit. Mine came off without breaking but it looks like I might've gotten lucky!

Is the Borg warner replacement the one with the flat tab for the sender instaed of the post type? Those units are the most reliable ones on the market. In 60,000 miles and 15 years I have replaced it once and it reads perfect every time. I wasn't sure if it was a Borg warner or a TRW.

Hi Chris,

Yes, the BW has the flat tab. It required a simple modification to the car's electrical, but that was it. I'm glad to hear the reliability of the unit is good. Even though it was a simple upgrade, I don't like doing things twice!

Hey guys, I have gone through 2 "H" brand oil pressure sending units and #2 now is leaking at the housing and end (not where it threads into the block). I'm not interested in repeating the same problem for a third time.

Where can I get an accurate and leak-free/long-lasting oil pressure sending unit for my gauge?

Try going with the Borg Warner S767 (I think that was the part number). I chronicled the install on my blog. I picked mine up at Pep Boys for about $16 and they had it for me the next day. Since it has a tab, you'll have to modify the car's wiring a bit but it's easy. I haven't had any leaks at all thus far.

I have the same problem. I've tried vice grips and still can't get the sucker to move. I've given it some PB blaster and I'll try again tomorrow. @kings1527 do you still have those photos?
