I wasn't sure where else to post what I just noticed, so I figured I'd just make a new thread.

I decided that I'd start watching "Heros" because its on Hulu, and I just subscribed, anyway so I'm on Episode 9 "Better Halves" and in the scene where this guy is going through some of his sons old comic books there is a copy of the "Tales from Space" comic. It was barely shown, but you could tell what it was. Anyone else notice that? Maybe it's old news, but oh well.

Edit: Yup, old news. I just googled it and its mentioned in the BTTFwiki, along with an appearance in 3rd Rock from the Sun... :( my nerd powers are weak.

I remember seeing that when it aired but couldn't remember the reference. I forgot to google after the show. I've seen a lot of subtle references to BTTF in cartoons lately. I think it's because people who grew up with BTTF are in the industry now and are adding these little easter eggs for fun.

And yes, I watch cartoons. There are some really good ones out there with plots and dialog much better than 90% of the other shows. Plus the artwork is impressive. Take Motorcity for instance, if you like Ed Roth then you'd love the artwork in that show.

Since this is the Nerd thread I cant see anywhere better to place this.

Being in the special effects business for ten years prop making has always been my life. From working in film production, to appealing to the kid in me I've always loved creating original pieces as well as perfect replications for fans or "nerds" alike.

What I have been planning long before I bought the Delorean was to build a full scale replica of.........

Now before you all smack your fore heads in sync., I've actually been gathering all I can for the schematics and there's more than enough just from the dvd bonus features alone which are choc full of tech stats. Even in LA my effects teacher Rob Burman who helped with the original films design and construction was gracious enough to fill me in on everything he could. While interning in his shop I had the childish joy of playing with some of "Brundles museum of natural history" pieces. This will be a full scale, working (sliding door/smoke/spinning lights etc.) replica.

I only plan to build one at first due to lack of space but so long as this one comes out right and more space prevails the second pod and computer will follow. Thank Giger that Meghan is equally as nerdy and into special effects as I am or I would surely be a lonely guy.

Sooo does this qualify as nerd territory?

They mention the crew member's name who owns the DeLorean in the video.... It's Shawn "Chili" Kirkhoff. I met him at the BTTF 25th anniversary reunion and he's a super cool guy. Amusingly, he looks exactly like the American Dad character that is based off of him. If you haven't watched that episode it's titled "DeLorean Story-An"

Actually (looking at the two "H" hospital signs, the right one is a Honda Logo) and this is a common Honda tire size (years ago). So maybe they guy's a Honda geek.

I let my geek flag fly here for a sec. I think it's terrible. I agree JJ's a great director. The whole lens flare thing he does has to go but seriously, both Star Trek and Star Wars!?!?!? I hope he's not taking this stuff lightly. These franchises are beloved by millions if not billions of fans worldwide. Trek 09 was a great movie. I had some issues with the sets they used and a few other superficial elements of the film but all in all a great movie and an interesting concept to put the charcters in an alternate universe. But now star wars too? Are Kurtzman and Orci writing the script too? Not that I have aproblem with their stories but I'm sure there are a ton of other writers and directors just itching for a chance to do something big like Star Wars and would probably due a great job with it. I guess we'll just wait and see.

I haven't given a shit about either franchise since Jedi, and ST:VI. But I just wanted to acknowledge, like it or not, that Abrams has achieved at a serious level for a fan.

I had to look this up as I had not heard of it before. I'm impressed. How many cartridges do you have for it? I read this on Wikipedia and thought it was interesting:


The game built into the Vectrex, MineStorm, would crash at level 13. However, on some machines the game would continue until the highest level, in which more mines were laid than would hatch. Consumers who complained to the company about the crash at the 13th level received a replacement cartridge in the mail. Entitled MineStorm II, it was the fixed version of the Vectrex's built in game. Nice! I was one of those childhood kids that had this thing. It's in a box in the basement at the moment. Borderline useless, like you said. The Gyromite game was more novelty than anything else. I can thank the neighbor down the street that gave me $10 a shot to mow his grass in the summer and $10 a shot to shovel his driveway in the winter. I recall going to the city when I was like 12 or something and walking into a Toys R Us with all my money and plopping down about $225 I think it was for the whole set. Man, that was one heck of a day. That grin might have rivalled the odd DeLorean grin :) Funny thing is, every piece of original Nintendo stuff I have ever owned still works to this day as well as it did the day I bought it. Can't say that for the number of newer electronics that have died shortly after the warranty expired. It was way easier to fix stuff when the solution was just to blow on the cartridge, lol.

Yea it was pretty much a useless accessory but I was always intrigued by it. Plus my fear of robots and the thought that it might turn on us at any moment kept things interesting. Imagine getting up to take a piss in the middle of the night and seeing that robot in the closet with the door cracked and the red light on its head lit up. Those were just some of my nightmares. I won't even bring up clowns. Jesus.

Back then stuff was simpler and I think that's why it's had a longer shelf life. I agree. I had a PS3 I bought new in 2006 that died a couple of years ago after what I would describe as moderate use.

If you really want to geek-out, you should put on a vinyl record of Rush - Moving Pictures or Signals while you're playing it. They're my favorite band but after going to a handful of concerts and seeing all dudes between the ages of 30 and 50, it definitely fits in this thread.

Every now and then I boot it up and play Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem (I, II, or 3D), Jazz Jackrabbit, Doom, Blood, etc. Even has the Turbo button since it was so advanced for its time. Oh the memories...

I happen to have every single Nintendo console ever created, with the exception of the newest "Wii U" thing, and all are functional. The old NES I got at a garage sale, and it still plays Super Dodgeball like there's no tomorrow. SNES works flawlessly. My N64 I bought brand new when it first came out and they were bundling Super Mario 64 with it, and it only died last year. Got another one and that one's been fine ever since. My Gamecube was amazing until the Northeast Blackout of 2003, during which it fried. After gutting it, every single day since I started my current job I've been using it as a lunchbox. I got a second one, and that one's been fine ever since. My Wii I got when it was still in massive shortages and was being marked up on Amazon for $100 more. I also have a Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, the latter of which was almost confiscated by TSA three years ago after they didn't know what in the hell it was on a trip to Florida.

Does anyone remember those old black and white LCD Palm Pilots? Or the knockoff Handspring Visors? ActiveSync to synchronize everything to your computer, monstrosity of a USB/charging cable combo, quite hilarious how Blackberry and the iPhone made that obsolete. I still have both, and I believe they both still work. Batteries are probably shot in the Palm Pilot, but the Handspring Visor takes AAA batteries.

On a side note, I've got to see if my Atari still works. Last time I checked it was dead, but some other members of my household think otherwise. Might be worth getting it repaired somewhere if it's broken.

As an aside, the Handspring Visor wasn't really a palm "knock-off"; it was created by the same people who created the Palm Pilot and it ran PalmOS. It was arguably better than the Palm Pilot since they formed Handspring and made the Visor because 3Com was running Pilot into the ground. The Visor was actually a badass device; I remember the first time I read about the springboard cartridges, I was massively impressed.

Handspring eventually went on to merge with Palm and the devices became palmOne. I also still have my Treo 650. (And it still works too.) :)

I loved my Visor. I have been a handheld geek since way back. Had a TRS-80 model 100 (yes, that counts... lol - still have this and it works!), a Casio FX-5200p, a Newton, a Palm Pilot 1000, a Palm Professional, a Handspring Visor Deluxe (the orange one!), a Palm III, a Palm V, a Palm VIIx, a Palm M500, a Palm M505, an HP 200LX, a Compaq iPaq, a Casio Windows CE thing, a Sony Clie (don't remember the model), a Treo 600, Treo 650, Nokia E61, Nokia N-Gage, a Motorola Q9, an iPhone 3G, an iPhone 4, Kindle Fire, and the iPad mini on which I am typing this now... In that order.

Almost every one revolutionary in its own way. Some of the Palm models were more evolutionary but I was a relentless upgrader. Still am... Just waiting for that iPhone 5 successor... :)

Edit: forgot my Casio FX5200p. That thing was awesome too.

That list doesn't even include my thankfully past obsessions with graphing calculators, SkyTel pagers and data bank watches... lol

Impossible to say. That case you have there isn't an IBM case, it's one of the standardized generic cases that were being sold everywhere back in the day. I myself owned three of them, each with different spec components inside of it ranging from 486 to Pentium 100. That was the case you got when you went to you local computer shop and said you wanted a "mini tower". Notice how the two you posted are identical except with different fascias? That's why. :)

SAME HERE. I was so pissed off at the concept of having my motherboard tell the power supply when to turn on and off.

I have about twice as many cartridge games now and a lot of add ons like the "Touch Tablet" and Light Pen. I have about 300 games on disk, but I don't buy games unless they are in cartridge form and they must have the manual. To me the fun in collecting vintage Atari is the artwork in the maunals.

I can't see an Atari controller without remembering watching my younger brother and his friend playing a game on one several years ago. I don't remember the game but basically you're a block in a maze. They walk over to what is supposed to be a sword and use the button to pick it up. The next room has a dragon in it. So Josh runs at the dragon with the sword and pushes the button. This drops the sword and josh dies. That happens maybe five times in a row. Josh and Pj are yelling and laughing "what is going on? I hit him!" Then Pj yells "push another button!" to which Josh yells back " There's only one button!" I'm just dying of laughter at this point. They figured it out eventually. I sure wasn't going to tell them, I was having too much fun.

I tend to collect old computers and other equipment as well. I gave away my NES a long time ago and still regret doing it. But I still have my Sega Genesis/Sega CD 1st gen, SNES, and PS1 along with the Wii for my gaming systems. Nintendo has made many NES titles available though the Wii Shop, but the Wiimote doesn't feel right compared to this guy:

As much as I do enjoy collecting old machines and curios, I hate the idea of hoarding them where they can't be used. Granted one day when I have kids of my own, I plan on buying an Apple II so we can play Oregon Trail, and they can learn about computing from the ground up the way that I did. Especially with DOS. But still I don't like stuff just piling up either around the house or in storage. So I like to make retro technology useful, or simply repurpose things outright so that they I don't feel like they're being wasted.

I still have an old 1984 Macintosh Plus w/4MB RAM that I picked up off eBay in the late 90's. An 80MB HDD with OS 7 & Netscape 1.0 connected to a SCSI HDD, and I'll have a nice Mac Plus that can either surf the net or be my optional server. I've also got a G3 700mHz iMac (final model) that I planed on either keeping in a guest room for people to check their mail, or turning into a Macquarium (unless you keep the room cool the 700mHz version overheats the HDD).

I always loved older technology to play with for nostalgia, as well as to better understand and appreciate what we have now. Although places like Radio Shack have almost completely changed their merchandise altogether.

IMHO, Roddenberry did good and bad things hiring as many people from the old production as possible. Some of those early episodes have a real 1960s feel to them -- especially the ones where at the end of the episode, the "white hat" beats the "black hat" and everyone smiles and the credits roll, no matter how many people died or what unanswered questions were raised over the course of the story. They seem out of place in the 1980s and beyond. The one-piece uniforms looked akin to the space PJs everyone was wearing in the first Trek film. And the writing for the female characters was atrocious. Blonde, brunette, redhead... most of them carrying the same emotional baggage they would have in 1960s cop shows. ("Crusher! Your boy is in danger again! Start crying like the brave officer you're not!") I don't blame Crosby for getting out, but I guess she didn't know that writing was on the horizon -- or that her career was made by that show, heh.

This is pretty much why I give all of season 1 a pass. If the show had never grown beyond what you describe then it would have sucked (and probably wouldn't have lasted 7 seasons). But they figured out pretty quickly that they needed to get away from the old ways and evolve, and be its own thing rather than try and copy the original series. (Which they tried doing pretty blatantly at some points - The Naked Now, for example.)

The WCB was a fantastic drink. Sweet, but it didn't burn like a hurricane. You'd sip on it and then BAM! You're drunk. I have a great story about getting drunk on one of these one night, but can't post it publicly. The environment though of Quark's Bar really helped you achieve a buzz like no other. Anyone can get drunk, but it's a whole trip where after loosing the control of sobriety some tall person comes up to you and starts speaking gibberish. You try desperately to decipher what they're saying, only to realize some Klingon is speaking to you in their native tongue. After the intimidation is over, a Ferengi soon shuffles up to your table and encourages you to relax and drink more. You desperately try and escape the madness by imbibing more in an attempt to numb yourself. Then a Borg appears and engages you in a philosophical discussion of emotion and life by referencing a tiny plant they have tasked themselves with caring for. You are drunk enough now to take everything seriously and participate in this discussion, but are not capable of cohesive thoughts save for recommending gardening tips. After you finish your drinks and whatever food you may have ordered, you stop by the restroom to relieve yourself. While standing at the urinal, an LCD panel sparks to life and a female voice announces the results of your urinalysis which shows you to have a favorable edge in number and pattern recognition, and thus encourages you to head back out to the floor to gamble. While gaining your composure outside, you are fascinated by the spinning Dilithium Crystals outside the door, and then pause to watch the dogfight between ships hovering in the air above you as lasers fire off across the casino floor.

It's a damn shame that place closed down.

Also, what did the collective here think of Enterprise? I felt like that series had incredible potential and excellent characters and production. I was ridiculously bummed to see it go so early.

It was so easy to relate to because all their fictional tech was so crappy, half baked and "first-gen" but all the sets and props were made with the highest real tech that we had to offer. The gap between real tech and show tech had never been smaller, so it felt very real.

That movie is like Groundhog Day though. You think you watched it more than you actually have. :) I do remember the very first time I saw it though. The cold open showing the Enterprise being destroyed just left me mouth agape.

I have issues seeing 1701-D destroyed though. Those parts are always uncomfortable for me to watch, and its final destruction in Generations makes me tear up.

I wasn't too upset when D got blowed up good in Generations. I thought it was time for a new ship.

I really liked the design of 1701-E. I thought it was a good update, although I will agree giving the ship a joystick was a bit on the silly billy side.

One thing I never liked about D was when they did the saucer separation. I always felt there should have been more parts that unfolded once the ship separated. Even with the toy, I thought it looked goofy.

The one thing I did enjoy about the show was the evolution of Troi. She was such a dull character in the beginning.

As far as favorite ships, I'm still a huge fan of the Klingon Bird of Prey. It rattles, they are rusty, but what a cool design.

The Excelsior was such an unreliable piece of shit when the first of them launched, and the transwarp drive was a complete failure.

The best pre-D Enterprise was the 1701 Refit, which was essentially the same as 1701-A.

That was a great episode. I remember finding a handful of Enterprise C AMT models at an outlet toy store about 10 years ago. I bought them for 5 bucks each and sold them on Ebay for 50 dollars per ship. That was a lucky find. I kept checking back but they never got anymore in. I know I shouldn't have but I did build one to keep. I have no idea where it is now...I wish I'd of just sold it.

Mom found a few of my old toys in the storage shed and gave them to me last week. She gave me a Voltron watch, RatTrap the Transformer, and two others that I loved growing up. They're the blue and yellow lions from my diecast Voltron from way back in the early 80s. I was a huge Voltron fan. I tried to watch the 80s version a year ago and I couldn't take it. I had low standards as a kid. The toy is still awesome and built way better than anything they produce now. I know the black lion is broken and the red/green lion's heads are probably lost forever. I'm thinking of Ebaying my way back into having a full Voltron again. A few people have purchased the late 80s remake of the set to rebuild broken and lost parts so I might do that. I kept my 8 inch tall vintage diecast on my desk at work. This one is over a foot tall and modular...and heavy.

So I just have to find my 3 other lions or just buy odds and ends off Ebay. I'm thinking Ebay might be easier...that storage shed is a nightmare.

Every other winter we go home for Christmas. Each year we raid the attic and find more of my old toys and my son, who's now almost 6 gets to bring them home. His current favorite from last year is all the vintage 80's GI Joe.
It's really cool seeing those things that brought me so much joy do the same for him. Bonus, I also get a kick out of playing with them right alongside him.

I actually have all four Turtles, of each release, on the second shelf on the far right. It includes the originals, the movie turtles, the "Fox" Turtles, the "Nickelodeon" set and the 20th anniversary set at the back. I am working on getting the set based on the original Eastman and Laird comics, but I haven't been able to win a decent auction yet.

Apparently, this is one of those snap together models, that has detailed decals and doesn't require painting... Yeeeeah right. They look like ass if they're not painted. I'm thinking of getting more of them and making a mobile for the kid.

I've never before heard the words "disappointed" and "Krull" used together in the same sentence!

They dubbed Lysette Anthony, who played Lyssa in the film. Considering that she had all of roughly 8 minutes of dialogue in a film with an overall run time of 121 minutes, I don't see how it could have been so distracting to cause one to not want to watch the remainder of the film.

Admittedly, when I first saw the film, I thought that it was merely OK. Over the years though, it has grown on me immensely. I'd rather watch Krull than any of Peter Jackson's LOTR films!

James Horner was a young buck and had much to prove, especially considering what a splash John Williams had just made by combining the last breath of old Vienna a la Korngold with the leitmotif compositional structure of Wagner in the late 1970s when we started hearing full orchestral scores coming out of Hollywood again on a regular basis after rock and disco soundtracks had run their course in the mainstream. Williams had perfect timing. Horner got "Krull" and went completely balls-out with his best material of the time, and, unsurprisingly, came out with a winner.

Honestly, I can hear similarities in pretty much all of Horner's scores from the 1970s to 1990s. He had a formula that was working at the time: brass fanfare and main theme, second theme played in the cellos and violas, low brass for sinister connotation, rhythmic percussion to denote time and pressure. (It was "classic" Hollywood with a more modern sensibility, in that he was no longer necessarily bound by tonality, although atonal music was, for some reason, pretty much the realm of horror and suspense for a long time.) Add in a consistently-recurring theme based on a stepward motion from the fifth to the tonic with a raised fourth, usually in the piccolo, which he used in everything from "Wrath of Khan" to "Cocoon," and you have quintessential Horner. After that, he started resting on his laurels, and who can blame him? Film composers work treacherously long hours and have insanely short deadlines -- which is why almost none of them do their own orchestration. And they can borrow from themselves at will. So it's no wonder that scores from back-to-back assignment sound similar. (Ever notice the similarities between "Star Wars" [1977] and "Superman" [1978]? If it works, keep doing it -- that's the Hollywood mantra. LOL)

I think the "Pagemaster" is the worst offender, all he did was marry "Willow" and "Glory" and called it good. I mean, the guy is good when he's being original, it just that his stuff is SO similar sometimes that I find it takes me out of the movie it's so bad. By the WORST is his "Braveheart" score. Why he chose Irish pipes instead of bag pipes for a movie about a Scotland I'll never know.... :mad2:

The biggest rip-off that I've ever heard was done by Ennio Morricone in Adrian Lyne's Lolita (1997), which is clearly a rip-off of his score from Bugsy (1991).

I agree with Farrar in that pretty much all mainstream / big name composers are guilty of this due to the nature of the business. Even the legendary Jerry Goldsmith.

One of my favorite film score pieces of all time is David Newman's suite from DeVito's Hoffa (1992), which was recently used in an iconic campaign commercial by former MA Senator Scott Brown.

I'll admit they're obviously the work of the same composer, and share a common approach (triumphal main theme, Wagnerian use of leitmotif, etc), but the differences between them IMHO show careful attention to the subject matter. The main theme from Superman is brassier and more triumphal (as befits a movie about an individual superhero), whereas Star Wars is bassier, with warmer strings. "Leia's Theme" is more plaintive than its closest equivalent "Can You Read My Mind?", and both are clearly intended to evoke the situations their respective characters are in when we meet them.

And then there's Maurice Jarre. I heard echoes of "Grand Prix" in "Firefox" 20-odd years later.

One composer who's scores have all sounded uniquely different is Albert Pyun collaborator Anthony Riparetti. One of my favorites from Riparetti is his thunderous score from Pyun's Knights (1993) staring Kathy Long, Kris Kristofferson, and Lance Henriksen.

Pyun is one of my favorite directors.

John Williams isn't near as bad as Horner. Williams at least for a very long time, used a similar orchestration but didn't straight up rip off themes to the extent Horner does.

I find Robocop and Starship Troopers to have a very similar soundtrack too, and they were both scored by Basil Poledouris.... I think they're even in the same key! (F minor)

But I will never complain about that, since I'm Paul Verhoeven's top class fan!

I'm not criticizing composer's style. Being keen enough to discern familiar orchestration is awesome, I'm pleased to read others do it. It's the blatant, carbon copies of themes that I find annoying about Horner. For example, not only did Horner utilize a work not his own, the Gayane Ballet Suite, he reused the exact same orchestration and simply slowed the tempo down for Clear and Present Danger. Borrowing from classical music is ofcourse not unheard of, but there is a line between inspiration and plagiarism. I could use Star Trek VI as a terrific example of this, there's no doubt that the opening overture was heavily influenced by Holst's Mars (that was expressly the style Nicholas Meyer wanted) but it was tweaked enough (not Ice Ice Baby tweaked) that it was really just a shadow or Mars.
