Carpet Dye: Solution or a Mess Waiting to Happen?

With the D sitting in winter storage I just realized how faded my carpet are. Has anyone ever tried a carpet dye? I have no experience with dying carpets. Does any of this stuff work or is it all a gimmick in a can? I'm not looking for perfection but I don't want to waste time and have a huge mess to deal with. Any recommendations or warnings? I have grey carpets. Thanks all

Why should you dye?
It's a 30+ year old car.
Let it have some traces of it's age.
Aging comes with imperfections, but these imperfections make aging acceptable.

That - by the way - goes for mankind too; getting traces of aging isn't bad, it's part of life.
Making them go away is like not accepting aging.

Of course the technical state of automibiles undeniably has to be perfect.
But that's not for reasons of looks, but for safety.
Better spend your funds keeping the car a safe driver than "Mister" or "Misses" Beautiful!

I know Bill Robertson dyed his light grey carpets black on one of his cars a while back. Bill kept his in a sealed dye bath for a week, and they really turned out great.

Don't use the spray on dye. It'll make your carpet crunchy and it doesn't work very well. I sprayed some door panels from my Monte Carlo and I kinda wish I hadn't. If you can find something big enough to submerge your carpet in then do it like Louie described and soak it for a week. Make sure you read the directions on the dye though. Sometimes they have to be heated to boiling before it will activate.

I tried dying some carpet and it made the carpet very stiff. I never got good results dying carpet but maybe if you can find the right dye you can have better luck than I did. Forget about fixing a spot. You should just do all of the carpet so it all looks the same. I would try cleaning it first, that may brighten it up enough so that you won't have to try dye.

Thanks all. I think this weekend I will pull all of the carpets and soak 'em for a while and see how much dirt will come out. Obviously the aerosol option is out :thumbdown:
