I got a Chiappa Rhino 40DS chambered in .357 Magnum. I was never much of a revolver guy, the only other revolver I own is a Taurus Judge, but I am really loving this one!

If I remember correctly, G&A did an article on this handgun sometime in the past year or so. Can't recall what they said about it but it certainly is an interesting design. Cool find.

Thanks

I first saw this gun in a 2" snub about mid 2011. It had been out for about 6 months or so and I tought it was a good looking gun(many would disagree) and I really liked the concept. The barrel is located at the lower 6:00 chamber on the cylinder. This greatly lowers the felt recoil and flip, meaning your follow up shots will not take nearly as long to place on target. That's not a hammer on the back, it is a hammer fired pistol, but the hammer is internal. What you see is actually a cocking/de-cocking lever. Although it was billed as a carry weapon with the 2" barrel and flat cylinder, I really didn't consider it mainly because of the price(almost 900 bucks!). It turns out Chiappa had some quality issues early on, but they ironed them out rather quickly so as long as you don't get a low serial number it's a nice gun. Chiappa also made the same gun in a 4", 5", and even 6" version...and all chambered in either .357 mag, 9mm, or .40 cal. Now I really liked the 4" version, I liked the looks, I liked the way it felt, and it's still small enough to still carry with the right clothes, (Tennessee is actually an open carry state, but I prefer to keep mine concealed) . Once I shot it I was taken in. Shooting it is just like shooting my .22 Mark II target pistol.

I have always been drawn to unique things or ideas that employ "out of the box" thinking, I guess it's no surprise I own a DeLorean.

Nice piece. My friend has a judge also. Fun lil defensive tool.
The Judge is a very "polarizing" gun for self defense duty. Some "experts" hate it like Quenton hates the DeLorean. I think as long as you are mindful of your ammunition choice it fills the role well. I personally love mine, (Public Defender polymer) but I rarely carry it. Mostly it stays next to the bed.

Same sort of thing crossed my mind. Hard to understand I guess unless you live there. I watched a certain Michael Moore film the other day on this subject which makes you scratch your head. Not sure it is a topic that is ever going to get everyone all in agreement. (And I say this aiming for it not to be a "political" subject, but more of a social issues subject. I don't know if the mods consider there to be a difference between the two?)

Don't take the bait. He is doing this best to get the thread closed. He is trying to start a political argument without actually talking politics himself.... He will let you do that and remove the focus from himself. He tried last night and failed, his thread was removed. Now he is here doing the same crap. I would ask the mods to please remove all the "pot stirring" posts ....I just wanted to show off my very cool new gun. No political views, just show off a cool gun I got. That's it and that's all.

Pretty much. If someone posts something in the open forum that they are displaying for other people's comments or feedback, you'd have to imagine some folks might not praise the object, but critique it instead. Same for 3D models, or other car projects, or a new job, or whatever. If your new thing was painted black and I commented that I like red ones better, it would be some feedback. In this case, you showed how cool your new gun was, and I was trying to bring up that not everyone thinks these things are cool. I don't happen to think JJ Abrams is a bad choice for the new Star Wars films, but others do. Again, it was not meant to be political (as, like I said, I feel there is a difference between subjects that are political and others which are social issues). Mentioning the movie or posting the trailer was to make that point. One that obviously others share as well.

Chris, I don't think threatening people with your guns on here is the right thing to do. Even if you are joking about it. See, there are some things that aren't okay to joke about in life. If you don't think so, copy your comment verbatim and go ask your local police force what they think.

I hate that we can't have a thread about firearms here in the Open section of the forum without it going political. It always seems to start when a non-gun person comes along and comments. If you don't like firearms or have a political charge up your ass, please just refrain from commenting! It's that easy!

So, are you saying that if someone doesn't believe in what you guys believe in, they shouldn't come to your meetings because you don't want to hear someone tell you they don't agree with you?

That sounds a lot like how some other major problems in society were created.

Except you're not critiquing the object, you're critiquing the person's decision to purchase the object. Nobody posts a "hey look at my cool new thing" thread for "feedback" in that regard and certainly not for people to come in and say "your new thing sucks". If you don't like someone's new thing, don't criticize them for buying it.

This of course does not apply to a thread in the vein of "Hey guys, should I buy this new thing?" In that case, feel free to offer your thoughts on the topic - WITHOUT getting political.

Same for 3D models, or other car projects, or a new job, or whatever. If your new thing was painted black and I commented that I like red ones better, it would be some feedback.

No see, there's a huge difference. Going into a thread about a car that has been painted black and commenting saying you like red ones better is BORDERLINE trolling if that's all you had to say. If you offer an aesthetic explanation as to why you believe red is better, then that's feedback. Coming into a gun thread just to comment about how much you dislike guns isn't feedback, it's outright trolling. That's as bad as coming into a DeLorean forum just to comment about how much you dislike DeLoreans.

In this case, you showed how cool your new gun was, and I was trying to bring up that not everyone thinks these things are cool.
Not your call to make. This wasn't a "are guns cool?" thread, it was a "look at my cool gun" thread.

Chris, I don't think threatening people with your guns on here is the right thing to do. Even if you are joking about it. See, there are some things that aren't okay to joke about in life.
Nope. It's still cool to joke about anything and everything.

Pretty much this. We have a varied user base here on the forum and a lot of people have interests that extend beyond DeLoreans. This is an open discussion forum section. A really simple rule of thumb for this (and really any forum/website on the internet) is "don't bother with things that don't interest you".

We want to be fair to everyone to freely express and talk about their interests, within reason.

Like Chris says, there are two types of open posts, I have found, one where the poster says "I like French Toast" (or whatever) and the other is "I have just bought this French Toast - what are your opinions?"

For the first one, I have been adopting the mantra recently that "if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all" and letting other French Toast lovers bond together over their mutual love. I'm not a FT fan, but I understand that others are, and that's fine with me. Life's rich pageant and all that.

For the second one, imho, if you have specifically asked for opinions then you should be prepared to receive both positive and negative opinions.

And, for what it's worth, I agree with Jonathan about Chris's remark. I appreciate that it was made in jest but I don't think it was/is appropriate. In the worst case scenario, it could be legally taken as a threat.

The fact that it's been universally recognized as a joke (regardless of its appreciation) means the legal weight for it being an actual threat is nil. I mean really, how many times does "I'll kill you if..." and the like appear everywhere in casual joking conversation without malicious intent? Hell, last year Kenny threatened to drive Red to Atlanta to have IT kill me. :)

IN ANY EVENT... Michael, I've got to ask what it's like to shoot that thing. It's a really goofy shape, and I'm a Glock guy myself. Is it comfortable to hold? Because it doesn't look it; it seems like it's massively top-heavy.

Here's how this works:

we are discussing the topic of GUNS-- As in the trade the OP has made.

We are not discussing WHY we own guns, We are not discussing the politics behind guns, we are not discussing the social relevance of guns, we are not discussing gun control, we are not discussing anyone's opinions as to why it is right to own guns or not. We are not discussing why other countries do something some ways. We are NOT discussing Michael Moore's film.

Any posts venturing into those areas will be deleted. Period.

If you do not want to read about guns, you do NOT have to click on the thread.

I'll put this thread back on topic. I was a cop for 25 years, NRA firearms instructor, SWAT instructor, Undercover Tactics and Firearms instructor, yadda, yadda, yadda. My wife has similar credentials but she is a better shot than me, and I'm good. When she went to the Police Olympics she not only out shot all the women but all the men too.

There are two kinds of Defense:
1. Defending your home or fixed point. Here you can have whatever you want. AR, Shotgun, and/or Handgun (My Favorites in order Glock 17, Remington 870, AR-15). The AR's are locked up and the AR is not the best firearm to use in the house, it would be my third choice.
2. Out with the family. Carry lots of rounds My theory on this type of defense is put a whole bunch of rounds down range and get the hell out of there. I carry a Glock 25 9mm and 2 extra mags. You should not get in an offensive gun battle to try and take the guy out. Protect your family and yourself and RUN!!!!

9MM, 40, 45, .357 doesn't matter, 9mm has more rounds per mag. What someone usually says is why don't you carry .25 or .22 if you feel that way. I carry Winchester Black Talon, “Ranger SXT”, Bonded PDX1 or whatever they are calling it now. There is no law that prohibits civilians from buying ammunition marked "Law Enforcement," which some of the Ranger line has printed on the box (as do other lines of ammunition.)

Now don't start harping on Revolver vs Automatic. While working UC I carried a S&W model 60 and no extra rounds. That's because I usually had 2 or 3 backups around me or just outside the door watching or listening to everything going on. The theory is if the shit hits the fan start shooting and get behind cover and wait for the troops to save my ass. It's hard to hide a large gun when you are wearing sandals, shorts and a t shirt. I do have several revolvers including a S&W 686 6" .357.

But if I had to pick one when someone was coming in the door, Glock 17 9mm 17 round magazine.

It's not forward heavy at all, in fact it balances right at the trigger. The entire gun(save the barrel and cylinder) is made from milled aluminum alloy so its surprisingly light and without anything to reference scale, it looks bigger than it actually is.

Shooting is amazing. There is virtually no muzzle flip, and very little felt recoil. If you have ever shot a full size .22 pistol, that's what its like. I could shoot all 6 rounds in the span of 2 or 3 seconds and place everything center mass on a profile target. In DA the trigger gets a lot of complaints on how heavy it is but I have to say I thought it was very manageable. This is not a cheap gun, a weapon like this fetches around 850-950 on gunbroker and sometimes more, so I was pretty happy to get it for pretty much nothing.

I recently bought a Kimber CDP II 45 with the 4" barrel along with the 22 conversion kit. Traveling cross country in a motorhome right now the 45 gives me security while the 22 conversion drops shooting costs at the range. I really like this gun.

Here is a size comparison between the Rhino and my S+W .40. As you can see, it's not the monster it looks like by itself and I think it's the perfect size for a revolver. Like I mentioned earlier, not my first choice for concealed carry duty, but it could work. It weighs in at 29oz., the .40 pictured with it comes in at 23oz. Fully loaded, they would probably weigh about the same.

Well as far as I'm concerned, you were the only one that was trying to derail the thread. As far as saying nice things, I really don't care. Feel free to say you hate it. If it's not your cup of tea and you are a diehard Glock fan, by all means, feel free to voice it. As far as being a "good looking" gun, I fall on another lever when it comes to looks. A gun is like a jeep, the uglier it is, the better it looks. I do not go for chrome finishes, inlay or engraving work. I like them to look rugged, "tacticalish" <I made a new word, So the Rhino is a damn good looking gun to me (for a revolver).

Not exactly square, but hexagon shaped. The reasoning was this would make the profile slimmer and easier to conceal. Excuse the dirt, I just got through putting 100 rounds through it.

Ammo can get expensive. I shot 4 boxes(about 100 bucks) today through 3 different guns. I shot a box of .357 magnum and a box of .38 SPL through the Rhino today...all that barely took up an hour. I mostly practiced Failure Drills at 5 yds. inside of 3 seconds with my Ruger LC9 which is my usual carry weapon. It's much harder that it sounds.

It comes in right at 31oz loaded with .357 magnum. I have a holster for it but have yet to carry it. I'm geting a shoulder rig for the Rhino to carry under a jacket.

My "go to" carry weapon is the LC9,(just like your LCP except in 9mm).

31oz is almost 2 lbs (16 oz to 1 lb, right?)... that seems on the heavy side. Although if you're going with a shoulder rig, that won't matter as much.

I couldn't do a shoulder rig here in TX because its too warm most of the time to wear a jacket everywhere.

That's cool though.

I've gotta admit that I really liked it when I read an article on it a few months back but changed my mind when I saw the prices they were going for. I ended up going back to looking at the Judge and Governor. I decided on the Governor in the end. I liked the "Mix Six" slogan. 45LC is definitely not the cheapest ammo for a revolver, nor is .410 but .45ACP is more common. I also took advantage of Sportsman's Guide's recent free shipping offer so I ordered some moon clips after my last ammo purchase. I'll have to start a thread with my next acquisition.
