In the interest of raising awareness and education about misused, unmaintained or crashed Deloreans, post pic and discussion here.

This is from a thread on the old site, " Delorean abandoned in Norcal Forest"

vin #5837 is somewhat abandoned in the Cazadero forest near Monte Rio,Ca

a dmc talk member ( forgot his name) heard about this car from a person at the Palo alto car show a few years back, no real back story given. My old boss grew up not 10 miles from the area the car was rumored to be so he took a drive up there and didnt find it, then a week later tried again and did find it. Then i came up there and took more photographs

the Facts:

Vin: 5837 or 31?
Grey Cloth interior manual
grooved non gas flap, power antennae
has trailer hitch.
last registered to a woman Nancy, who owns the property the car sits on
reg expired 2001, last smogged in '98

through Numerous attempts by mail, we have NOT been able to contact the owner, NO other residence is known. NO known reason why it was parked. This property is a semi abandoned summer cabin, and the neighbors know nothing nor do they care to help. It appears the car was driven on the lot possibly under its own power, and parked un touched for over a decade while foliage built up. the tires all still hold air. 33k or so miles

The body looks to be in incredible shape, no dents could be found though the heavy weight on the roof may have dented the t panel or hood badly, the panel gaps look wonderful, no immediately visible frame rot. it would take a full day with a chainsaw, truck, trailer and shovels to remove this car from its tomb Then its still in the middle of nowhere.

The only real way to find the owner would be to camp out at the mail box near by and wait for whoever empties it every few days, but this may get you shot in that part of the woods.....

AGAIN I HAVE NO CONTACT INFO ON THIS CAR PLEASE DON'T ASK

This car popped on Craigslist Sacramento nearly a year ago, it sounded scammy and was poorly written without pic or a price. Myself and a few other dmctalk members went to see it at the tow/impound yard it was at.

The facts were these:

Vin 4218
owner was the man who ran the tow yard, he was quite large, he could not fit in a Delorean anymore
he claimed to be the original owner
claims he painted it black in '84 to set it apart from all the thousands of Deloreans out there.
claimed it ran but would not demonstrate this
claimed it was perfect underneath and denied any front end damage
denied and body or interior problems
claimed all it needed was a tune up, some paint and a windshield
everyone that looked at it told him to piss off
he wanted $8k but would take $6k cash now
he eventually sold it on ebay to some poor sap in the LA area for $5k after poorly repairing the front end so it could at least roll
the car appears to have been driven into a tall curb at around 30mph, destroying the crumple tubes and suspension, and pushing the radiator through the trunk.

Super ultra custom modifications that warranted the absurd selling price:

ultra smooth black paint job with tons of bondo to keep the car nice and heavy
bondoed over gas flap hood, because that would break the clean lines of the black paint
custom tan cloth and grey vinyl upholstery
666 miles on the trip odometer
ultra rare wood engine cover prop rod
after market coil for monster spark
hand made made exhaust that travels through frame cross member with a glass pack that only muffles one side

Are either of those two Deloreans, the one in the forest especially, recoverable? I can't see the dealer car being anything other than a parts car, and a decade outside for the one in the forest would just about kill it, I would imagine...

yeah the forest car is totally salvageable from what i can see, the interior is all moldy though and the fuel system probably gone, maybe the engine or trans too. but then again you dont know until a deep look into it

i was thinking the same thing. Some people are unbelievable!!!!! :angry0:
How do you put a trailer hitch on a D anyway and what can you possibly tow with it a skateboard?

And what the heck happened to the frame on the black one!!!! That whole thing is probably worth more in scrap, can't believe he got 5g's for that :sad30:

No, a hoverboard.. Unless we rip off BTTF and someone hitches a ride on the back with said skateboard.. I know, bad D joke of the week.. Please don't kill me.. I can do that myself, thank you very much!.. But really, even if that cover were left on, it would be in better shape than lettin crap fall on it for years.. What year is that plate? Looks pretty old!

Isn't that first one technically abandonded property? If it is, I strongly suggest several of us go up there and...uh..."liberate" it.

I doubt the owner would miss it.

Who owns it, the store? Do you think the car was properly prepped to sit? (I doubt it)

Some guy named George owns the store (and the car) I spoke with a couple of the employees. They said the only thing done to the car was the electrical had been taken out to prevent hot-wiring. They also said the owner has no intention of ever selling it. Apparently the car was a daily driver for a number of years before the owner decided to retire it to his store

You and me both! Cosmetically the car is in pretty good shape. No dents or scratches in the stainless. The interior looks all there with the exception of a cracked binnacle. My guess is the dark window tint saved the interior from being baked.

I remember that D. Went to go evaluate it back in 2000-2002, before I moved back to Fort Lauderdale. It used to be a display piece inside of the store.

I found the old pics in my photobucket acct:

From what I remember, it was an automatic, missing the emblem on the shifter, black interior. Very good condition. Yeah, George will not sell that car. Kinda disappointed he moved it outside though.

Funny, i remember it being black..:hmm: Old age catches up from time to time.

My friend Mike knew a sales guy and we were able to open the car and go through it. There was some kind of out dated anti-radar device installed on it... real 80's old school electronics crap.

You can see part of it under the front spoiler in that front view pic outside the store.

This was the first Delorean I ever went to see with the intention of buying one. No idea it was in such a poor condition.
It was in an old chicken hatchery and it still had this strong smell :vomit_2:
But there were a bunch of expensive and classic cars; Lamborghini's, Rolls, Ferrari, Lotus,... you name it like 150 cars in this old farm. They all belonged to a doctor that collects them, but was getting rid of his collection.
So I was kind of surprized to see this place with all these cars. (I expected just the Delorean) The Delorean was is a real poor shape. Parts of the engine and the clutch were in the bonnet. But the car was certainly a good project car. the dash was very good. The frame however, for what I could see was not good.
I did like the cherry red color. I would have paintd it the same color if it were in a better condition if I would have bought it.
He wanted 15.000€ for the car... It s probably still there now.

I wonder if I really could liberate the one from the first page if it is abandoned property.. How far from Vacaville, CA is it? Might have to tow it to Vacaville if I can legally just claim it and re-title it.. It would be quite a clean up and fix, but at least it would be saved from fading away. Maybe send it in for repairs while deployed and come home to a fixed and cleaned D? Just a thought..

If this vehicle is on private property, then is not abandoned. Now, if the property is abandoned and taxes due, then you might claim the property and anything on it. Check with the appraisal district.

Yeah one of the Part III offroad VW chassis cars was rebuilt. It's up for auction in December through Profiles in History. I think the reserve price is 600k.

The car that was hanging upside down in Hawaii was one of the hero cars from the first BTTF movie (the B Car). It is the sister car to the one currently sitting on the universal back lot, and was the car destroyed by the locomotive at the end of part III. The panels and doors were reassembled onto a mockup frame by Jay Ohrberg and sold for display. It has the original train wheels as well as the only known surviving 'hood box' that housed all the 1955 components to replace the blown time circuit control microchip.

Ok the word is in, my friend that lives 20 minutes away went to see the car yesterday. The forest car is gone.

The house and surrounding property been cleaned up. Hopefully the car went to a good home!

Quite a nice change, driving through the forests of France instead of becoming part of the forest in California

The deer whistles must have looked ridiculous. That's my guess what was attached to those plastic mounts on the fascia.

Hope it isn't BHCC they are doing a deal with. Although we can accredit them to saving cars like these it would be nice if it is not a reseller rather a DMC user/restorer.

From what I've been able to discern, I don't think its them.

This car has been sitting for a long time. The radiator and fans are missing and the engine was partially disassembled. you can just make out the condenser sitting on the ground. But otherwise it is a complete car. Lots of frame rust though... it also appeared to me like the front end of the body was lifted off of the frame... not sure exactly what I was looking at when I peered under there, and I didn't take any pictures of that unfortunately, but there was definitely significant space between the top of the frame and the bottom of the fiberglass.

Sounds like the car was overheated and the head gaskets popped. Someone started taking it apart and then end-of-story. It will need a lot of love to get it going again. Figure a lot of frame rot and the interior is a mess. Rebuild the brakes, fuel, clutch, and cooling system and all of the other little bits it is going to need. Repaint the facias, regrain the car. Tires, struts, battery, all the rubber hoses and seals, and then the A/C. A lot of parts.

The overheating was my guess as well, it was last registered in 1993. Mechanics were probably saying “a Delorean? Cant get parts for that...” About that time.

For what its worth, i have definitely seen worse interiors. The binnacle wasn’t even cracked, bad rip in passenger seat though. Its a black interior automatic by the way.

This car is painted white. It will need a full paint strip before it can be regrained, if the purchaser wants to return it to stainless. It looks like part of the T panel and a test strip on the driver's door was already stripped.

Ah yes, I see more paint on the T panel bubbling or peeling. It's hard to tell from the angle of the photo. That points to an improper paint job to begin with, or the car has spent a lot of time in the elements. I think the purchaser needs to budget a paint strip in the decision to get this car.

Glad everyone is safe, but obviously still very sad. Hopefully it is repairable. Based on FB posts it sounds like it was Ken Kapalowski in Canada. Ken hasn't posted yet on what happened from what I can tell. The instagram post I saw said it happened "off rattlesnake point." Rattlesnake point (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattlesnake_Point_(Canada))is a conservation area in Ontario
