View Full Version : General Differences in airbox stickers

Just curious if anyone knows the story of the two styles of airbox stickers? This came up the other day while working on another owner's car. I'm personally very attached to the smaller sticker on my airbox, as opposed to the much larger ones that I've seen on other cars.
Is mine typical of much earlier cars? Is it just the wrong sticker that made its way onto the motor somewhere along the line? I don't know for certain that I've ever seen another one like it.

The small sticker was used on early cars. 1880 had it.

Small stickers were used on the early VIN cars. Not sure when the switch was made to the large version. Sounds like a good POLL question though. Maybe we can narrow it down to a probable transition range.

Good thinking! I added a poll above.

6575 had the older smaller style but my airbox was cracked severely when I took ownership. I bought a new airbox and ordered a NOS sticker, which was the larger style. So, at least until 6575 (late '81), it had the smaller style.

Looking at some of the photos I have saved, it is difficult to see a cut-off point.
All the cars with "original looking" engine bays up to about 02500 seem to be Small (There are a few Large ones prior to that, but they are in engine bays that look refurbished, (01623 DL4567's car, 01950 or Stage II cars such as 01722). As DMCH only stocks the Large size, it is reasonable that refurbs use large
The first Large I see that looks original (i.e. heat damaged and wrinkled) is 02510, but between 02500 and 03700, say, it seems to be a toss up as to which sticker cars have.
My car is 02743 and it is Large, as is 02744. But 02777 is Small. :confused0:
03680 is Small, and then there is a big gap to the last Small one I see on 04594.
EDIT - just saw Alex's post above, so I may have to recheck more of the later ones. I gave up after 06000 :)

Checked the Millennium Concours Manual to see what they have to say:
Label (black with “DMC” logo—early VINs may have smaller version, late VINs may have Renault label)
Any idea what the "Renault" label looks like? I don't think I have seen one.

I had the small label on 3004 when I first got her. I thought it was wrong when I compared it to other D's in the club, so I bought the larger one and replaced, but I have the small one, even though the lettering is brown. It wasn't until I talked to James Espey about the label that he told me the small was correct for my VIN. He might know the cut off.

3937 has the larger/later style label. It has been that way since I bought the car in 2007. I do not know if it had been replaced prior to that.
The way the Concours Manual mentions it, are they saying the later/larger style one with the filter element instructions IS the Renault label?

5180 had the large style OE and was replaced with the same size in the late 90's.

Now that I saw Stephen's shot of 3130 I realized I have seen the small one before, but didn't recognize it since his is still pristine white somehow. I sort of like the aged brown look of it on mine :)
I love these production variance threads.

I'm "Assuming" that it's original. (Most everything on it is).

Mine had the small sticker up until a few weeks ago, as weathered as <5,000 miles will be.

That would be the implication but of course it says DMC and no mention of Renault.
Again, perhaps something James can elaborate on.

Mine came with the small style but was replaced with the larger one due to age.
The small one was turned into a magnet by the previous owner and now graces my frig. Thanks Delorean00

OK, so the huge majority of people seem to have the bigger ones and there's definitely an early-vs-late thing going on here.
Which one do you guys LIKE better? Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if it's down to what was on your car or if some folks like one style better than the other; sort of like the HVAC decals.

Well' since I'm used to the smaller style I tend to lean that direction. There does seem to be a place on the passenger side of the airbox that is raised (running front to back) were a sticker or emblem was supposed to go. Does anyone know if there was an original plan for this area???? As for my stickers I do know that it is the original set.:rock_on:
Related question: where could one find a new smaller-style sticker? The NOS ones, as Chris pointed out, are very hit-or-miss. The larger-style sticker is the only one DMCH sells. Is it even possible to find a smaller sticker that's not NOS?

Here is 3205's as it exists today. I actually had NO sticker when i first bought the car and there was no indication it ever had one.
However, I'm apparently the only one thus far with a white (Renault) sticker!

Keep in mind that this is the same engine and air box found in specific Volvos of that time (can't remember specific model). I've seen a Volvo with the same engine/air box but can't recall if it had a sticker on it or not. Maybe that's the reason for the raised section???

I've noticed the early, smaller airbox stickers don't tend to age well. They brown badly, and peel along the edges. This is probably why some earlier cars are fitted with the larger replacement stickers.

It seems to me like the newer, larger ones tend to bubble a lot though. Maybe that's just the law of averages with the much larger surface area.

I always loved the look of the SS labels. I still have mine connected to my PRV airbox because I'm not sure what to do with it.
1643, like the rest of the early cars, originally had the small sticker. When I bought the SS label kit I had the option of the smaller version or the large one and I went with the large.

I saw a couple posts about where to buy the smaller version. On the DMCH store site, you can see under the 10-0-1 kits page the label sets for 81, 82, 83 cars. They all show the larger filter element instructions style decal. I bought this 1981 label set a couple seasons ago and this larger version is the replacement style I got in it.
I got clicking a little further to see that decal in particular is p/n 110096. Another couple clicks shows our smaller style decal as p/n 110097. Unfortunately it is priced at the dreaded $0.00 mark. Not sure how much more there may be to the story, but it looks like the larger style ones are the primary option.
EDIT: Jawn... what is the HVAC decals discussion about? Is this a decal on top of the A/C compressor, or something different?
EDIT2: Dave G/Dermot... yea, that Renault sticker would be neat to see. I didn't know if they meant in the Concours Manual by referring to is as the Renault sticker whether it was just the DMC sticker made by Renault, or some other one entirely.

Looks like it's missing the outline border if it is. I'm not sure where that's supposed to go.
I did a bit more research, and apparently there are dozens of places that will print out custom vinyl stickers if you provide them with an image. I can make one if anyone's interested, but I'll need dimensions and a close-up so I can make it "natively sized" (300 DPI, same as a printer). Then anyone who wants one can give the image to their sticker shop of choice and get one printed off just for them. Of course, finding this (http://www.brandsoftheworld.com/logo/delorean-motor-company) saves a boatload of time in the process. It's just a matter of proper sizing.

Yea, that's the one. The link to it was on the page for the other air filter sticker, and with the similarity of the p/n's, I thought it was our smaller version style we were looking for. Not sure though as I don't have an image file handy of that smaller style one. I do have JPG files of all the labels. Not sure where I got them from, obviously posted online somewhere at some point. The air filter JPG I have is the large style one and you are right about printing to the right size. The image opens up to full screen size for me. It does look like though if you got detailed enough in some photoshop or powerpoint software, you could probably make the smaller one from this file by computer trimming off the filter instructions part at the bottom and adding the edge in its place.

http://vin559.com/images/projects/airbox_sticker/reproduction_sticker_raster.png
[link to SVG (http://vin559.com/images/projects/airbox_sticker/reproduction_sticker.svg)]
That's quite close to the original, going from the high-res version of the picture I posted before of my old one. Naturally, since it's a vector, it can be printed at any size with zero loss in quality. Feel free to download it and use it in your own projects. If someone could measure theirs real quick and give me the overall dimensions, I can convert this into a full-size .png. :)

What program do you use to view SVG files besides a browser? Something from Adobe I imagine. Also having a PNG would be cool.
What program do you use to view SVG files besides a browser? Something from Adobe I imagine. Also having a PNG would be cool.I used the free and open source Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/) to make it. It's basically the GIMP of vector files -- very fully featured, small learning curve, and free with no strings attached.
I'd do a PNG, but I don't have the exact sticker measurements, so I have no idea what size to make it :dunno: If someone could provide that, I'll gladly tweak the height/width ratio and post the result.

Hi,
here are my measurements on the small label. I know it is in mm, so some of the US folks properly get confused
In addition I scanned the later style label as a color reference.
Hope this helps to get a vector template. :)

Hi,
here are my measurements on the small label. I know it is in mm, so some of the US folks properly get confused
In addition I scanned the later style label as a color reference.
Hope this helps to get a vector template. :)Thank you very, very much Don! I've found mm is better than inches when it comes to small measurements like this. I'm still not that good with fractions, and often find myself googling the fraction to see how big it is. Anyways, I opted to use your scan and photoshop directly over that (thanks Jonathan for the idea!). Looking at your small sticker, it appears to be white and black. The large decal seems to be a different color for some reason, so I made the images exactly two colors: pure white and pure black (i.e. no gradients). MS Paint can easily change either color with the fill tool if anyone prefers a different color on theirs, then saving as a PNG will keep the changes.
Big text just so anyone skimming this thread will see these links:
Links to Airbox Decal PNG's
[Link to 300 DPI version (http://vin559.com/images/projects/airbox_sticker/reproduction_sticker_300_dpi.png)] <-- Native printer resolution
[Link to 600 DPI version (http://vin559.com/images/projects/airbox_sticker/reproduction_sticker_600_dpi.png)] <-- DO NOT USE FOR PRINTING! Twice as large for posterity ONLY!
Please note: these are sized 130 mm wide by roughly 51 mm tall. The original is about 55 mm tall, so this will be a wee bit shorter, but equally wide. The vector had the same problem -- I'm not quite sure where the extra height goes, but this is (hopefully) close enough for concours quality.
Enjoy! :wave2:
