Cleaning the tank

Started to clean out the gas tank last night, didn't get far. saw that my fuel pump top was submerged in gas. That is the area where the hoses attatch to the pump. Hoses looked poor to fair obviously one of the hoses are leaking. Not a big deal seeing I was planning on changing them anyway when I installed DMC Houstons integrated fuel pump (which I was told is on back order till late March). That being the case I probably will replace fuel lines, clean out tank and use old pump/fuel sender till new one comes then swap it out. Any ideas where the fuel leak came from, kinda scary having fuel sit on top of electrical components I guess I am lucky it didn't catch fire.

Often it leaks through where the return tube goes through the boot because people don't put any kind if hose clamp or anything on the boot.

Also don't be too scared, almost everyone deals with fuel on their pump at some point and I don't believe any have caught on fire from it. Heck lots of cars have submerged fuel pumps. My Mustang used to have a submerged pump and the terminals were openly exposed. Truth is that gasoline just isn't really electrically conductive; especially when we're talking 12v at only a few amps.

The only thing that fuel on your pump will cause is a really annoying smell inside the cabin.

I was helping a friend clean out his tank in anticipation of installing one of the integrated units. I found a shop towel in the tank! Can't imagine that could have been good. Some mechanic must have forgotten about it when they were doing work on the fuel system. Needless to say, I removed it. Glen, you will like the new fuel pump unit. The installation is very straight forward.

If it is only gas in there you are better off than many. All too often not only is gas leaking into the boot, the cover boot leaks as well allowing water to get in too! Then everything rots. The hoses probably aren't leaking, the boot holding the fuel pump is shot. If the hoses were leaking you would see fuel shooting out from there because of all of the pressure in them. When you do the pump you should remove all of the fuel and wipe the tank out.

Julee helped me out, pump on the way. The hoses look pretty poor, plan on replacing them with new pump
