I'm at about the half way point in 2510's COMPLETE restoration. I've begun putting odds and ends back together. 95% of the parts removed have been either replaced, repainted, bead-blasted or powder coated. This is going to be a very nice car when it's done.

I hope you enjoy some progress pictures. I haven't kept an online thread for this one like I did for 3205, but i figured it would be cool to do big updates instead of small ones.

Good memory! I still own 3205. It was my first one. I found it in Gilbert, AZ sitting out in the desert with some other beat up vehicles. It still has a long list of updates I'd love to do, such as spax shocks, stage 2, new dash and binnacle etc, but I have it at a place now where I'm perfectly happy. VIN 2991 was another local car I did last year. I helped the owner install an updated cooling system, some electronics and clean up the appearance of the engine among other things. He still own 2991 and drives it quite frequently.

A couple questions:

- From your first post with the many pictures, in those you can see a couple close-ups of the pistons from the brake calipers. Are those irregularities you can see justification for getting new pistons? I ask because my fronts need to come apart and new pistons may be required (and at $40 a pop, 4 of them for the fronts is nothing to sneeze at).

- The picture of the rear fascia edging strip/heatshield, what is the condition of the bolts (x7) connected to the fascia? Can you reuse them, or do you have to get those replaced? Again, the reason I ask is because I have the same new heatshield/edging strip and only one of my 7 bolts is still there. I have 7 of the new SS studs to put on, but not quite sure how to do it. They look like they could be glued or screwed in perhaps after the surface is ground down nice and flat/smooth.

Hey Jonathan! Yes this is indeed that car - Dave Cannady's the PO.

To answer your questions:

1. Brake pistons - yes, though the pitting is minimal and close to the edge, that will risk leaking as the pads wear down. One was already leaking upon arrival. All pistons had similar pitting and the calipers were full of congealed snot.

2. The fascia studs are all in tact IIRC, but I had to replace some on 3205 a couple years ago. I think unused a dremel to get the old ones out and epoxied the new ones in place. Maybe contact a vendor I dbl check!

5. Blew out the brake hard lines with compressed air and brake clean. I devised a system to catch the snot coming out the points of termination by hanging bags with air holes punched in the top to let them breath while collecting the old brake snot.

What a day. I spent allllll day under the car with my respirator, scouring pads, a couple cans of brake clean, rags, goggles and a whole lot of patience.

What you see there is what was under the thick black tar. I wish I took more before pictures. At least the frame is in excellent shape under all of it.

Out of curiosity, when you mentioned being under your car, how do you have your car in the air? I wasn't sure if you had a lift/hoist, so was wondering if you accomplished all of this while it was on ramps or jack stands? I mostly ask because my car would love me for getting her all cleaned up like this underneath, but all I have available to me are ramps and jack stands. I've done my fair share of confined space entries out in different plants and process vessels, but for whatever reason I don't feel very comfortable under my car. Yours looks like some great inspiration to get over it :)

All I have are jack stands as well. It's a tight fit, but its all I have room for. I use 6 stands, 2 in the usual front, 2 in the usual rear cradle, then 2 at the sides at the rear jack locations in the fibreglass. Peace of mind!

Hi Dave,

Another nice collection of progress photos.

These holes in the body moulds, are you talking about this extra hole in some cars on the passenger side where it might have been where they put the washer fluid bottle until it ended up going over on the drivers side? And were there a couple more here and there, like on the underside of the hood? Neat idea making use of the dust cap, although in some ways it looks like you need to put a bra on it? :)

I had a similar idea a while back and it was using these things:

What they are is the round, flat plastic cover that is intended on going outside the car and covering the end of the seat bolt bolt hole. You can often see on some cars that don't have them, where from a distance (it is quite low down to be able to see it), you'll see the hole where the seat belt bolt is and it sticks out a bit on that black background of the skirting piece if it doesn't have the cover.

I realized at one point this is the same size to cover the top of the front shock tower bolt. The same one that anyone that has the strut bar connects it to within the trunk. You couldn't do this if you have the strut bar, but for those that don't, you can buy two extras of these covers, and then it neatly covers up those bolt holes too. Your carpet board would normally be on top of it anyway, but underneath it is an easy way to pretty things up slightly. Not bad for $3.

Jonathan - these holes are behind the rear speaker magnets, under the quarter panels. They were originally intended to let the car breath, such as shutting a door or using the HVAC. Unfortunately the seals are toast and can lead to your car leaking when washed. Toby brought these to my attention. Sounds like they were eliminated on later body moulds. It was recommended i use fibreglass but I didn't want to go through the process. The dust shield was glued in place with weather stripping adhesive so I know it's water tight and can be removed if need be, though I don't see that happening.

Those seat belt covers, I know the ones you mean! I tried them first but they were too small.

Hmmm.... well, that's quite interesting. I wonder if we have inadvertantly stumbled on another VIN chronology variance of some kind?

I did find a picture of my car (the for sale photos when I bought it actually) and you can see the holes/spots where the seat belt cover caps were put. I'd be interested in knowing if the ones on your car are a different shape or size in some way? My car is 3937 and a Sept 81 build. Do yours look about the same? Bigger? Smaller? Or some other reason the caps didn't fit? It could be that my car had some mod done to it too for all I know, and it might be the unusual one where on other cars they don't fit normally?

Thanks also for the message about using jack stands. That might give me the motivation to get another pair of stands and give it a shot. I like that extra couple layers of safety too, so I'll see about using the jack stands, jack, ramps perhaps in combo to make me feel better about climbing under there. I don't doubt in reality it is very safe under my car. I just need to convince the paranoid half of my brain that :)

Sorry Jonathan, I meant they were too small for the holes I was filling where the speakers are. They work just fine on the seat belt bolts!

Yes, the extra 2 stands at the far edges goes a long way towards the feel of added security. I usually hammer in a few pieces of wood (thin 1/4" planks) until the jack stand is nice at tight against the jack point.

Dave, first -- great work. Second -- is it easier to get at and fill those holes by removing the quarter panel or by removing the trim piece on the interior? I'm going to tackle this job on my car soon (suspect this is where water has got in over the years) and afraid of breaking the trim piece upon removal. Many thanks.

The advantage to taking the interior trim off is that you need to do that anyway to change your speakers. It is a lot easier than taking off the quarter panel assuming you deal with the vinyl correctly.

Hey Farrar! Long time since I've heard from you!

It's probably one of those situations where it would be best to go from the outside but easier and quicker to go from the inside. Removing the quarter panels is kind of a pain given how much stuff is attached to them. I've never had a problem removing the inner trim panels. The key is to use gentle heat, like a hair dryer or a heat gun on low.

I can't see how doing the dust cap trick would be any less effective from the inside. A seal is a seal and as long as there is space between your speaker and the hole I say go for it.

Not a huge amount of stuff done today.

Spent some time inserting butt connectors on wires I found that were cut on the front and rear harnesses to the side marker lights.

I reinstalled the rear panel and a brand spanking NOS right rear trim panel. The rear parcel shelf is starting to look decent again.

I went over the frame with acetone to prepare for a day of touch ups tomorrow.

Be really careful with the newspaper and overspray. I've personally had it soak through even light overspray and get to the panel it was supposed to be protecting. I put painter's paper that has a wax like coating on the areas I know will get hit with overspray and then newspaper protects the large areas from the little droplets.

Those holes would be obvious. They'd be behind the speakers. You'd be able to see them maybe before you removed the speaker itself, but definitely after. I do not see the hole in the picture you posted, so it looks like you don't have to do that job. Congrats! :)

More engine reconstruction. Also reinstalled the rad, all cooling pipes and new hoses.

Reinstalled the fuel tank, steering universals, etc.

Lastly, got the first coat of paint on the closing plate. I also cleaned the garage!

You can see the fresh frame paint work. The steering rack boots got painted because they are being replaced anyway.

When you're looking at the hard fuel lines at the fuel tank, which line is send and which is return? I could send air through but figured I just ask! I'm certain the outside line is return and inside is send (to the engine).

Today I got both the rear quarter panels as well as the t-panel reinstalled. This was not an easy job. I noticed when I first got the car that one of the doors would rub badly on the t-panel cause cause a bit of a metallic snap sound. It took a lot of work to properly centre the panel in relation to both doors and quarter panels.

I also put two more coats of por15 on the closing plate. It's now ready for the Rustoleum smoke grey. It's going to look fantastic.

I repaired one rocker panel with new bolts and plastic catches. The other one is terribly rusted. I had to drill the screw heads off. The rest of the screw that's left is spinning with the riv nut in the fibreglass so I'm not sure how ill fix it yet. I'm open to suggestions.

Lastly, I reinstalled the windshield grill and trim pieces around the windshield.

I used some car scratch remover to get rid of some odd blotches on the binnacle lens.

I also removed all the door latches to clean and relive them. I sprayed then down with brake clean, dried them out and used a silicon spay lubricant.

I broke a piece of plastic on one of the latches that is drive. By the rod to the bell crank. I epoxied it back together and even constructed aluminum bars to support the pieces and clamped them all day to dry. Will it work? Who knows. Will I get locked in? Maybe!

How did the plastic lens cleaner work for the instrument cluster lens? Mine seems to have a lot of fogging on it.

Hey Ryan,

Mine looked as if it had been splashed with dirty water. The spots were highly visible and unsightly. I used that polish as a last resort and it worked the best, removing probably 85-90% of the spots. Now you'd have to really look hard to notice anything.

I'm very satisfied with results!

Forgive me for not knowing the terminology, but what does "spray bombed" mean? I thought all paint which wasn't brushed was sprayed. Is spray bombing a different type of spray?

Hopefully I'm not misusing the term, but my understanding is that spray bombing is using store-bought rattle cans, like SEM Trim Black. I've used sem trim black in other locations on the car because I honestly believe its the best spray bomb paint I've ever used, but from a resale point I believe it's better to be able to say those major components were professionally prepared and painted.

Box O' Craigs!

In this box were 4 previously damaged Craig radios. Nicholas had sent me a good one but unfortunately it was badly damaged by FedEx.

2 radios were rebuilt from the 4 donors. Everything works perfectly, even the LCD screens and tape deck. I've also added aux inputs for iPods.

One will be going in 2510, the other will be for sale at $500.

Progress report!

Interior almost complete. Solved the cooling fan issue. A few lights still burnt out.

You've likely seen my issues with the brake master right now, so I'm attacking that as well.

Topped up the coolant and held 15psi for an hour.

There will be some fit and finish with the panels to work out.

Hood is refurbished and ready to reinstall.

So the car is pretty close to complete. I wheeled it out and fired it up tonight. It started up no problem but is running pretty rough. I'm going to change out the plugs, reset the baseline on the injectors and adjust the mixture.

The FV is not buzzing but I got 8v at the plug, so ill have to investigate that.

I have some panel alignment to take care of as well.
