Has anyone purchased a binnacle from Hervey? On his website, he offers some recovered binnacles and I'm wondering if anybody has any experience with it? Good or bad? I want to make sure the vinyl looks accurate and fits well in the car. And of course, durability.

Thanks!

When i first bought my Delorean and was new to the community, i purchased some items from Hervey. One purchase was for My binnacle to be recovered. It turned out really good. I would suggest to be careful and make notes/keep track of your parts as far as a core charge, but I believe on this particular item he has you send your binnacle and recovers it, opposed to sending you a finished one plus a Core charge until he receives yours.

Here are some before and after pics of my binnacle.

That looks pretty damn good! Problem is, it wouldn't match my 30 year old dash that's in good shape. The binnacle posted in this http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?6192-Interior-retrimmed-in-Nappa-Leather thread looks awesome minus the stitching on the side.
The only one I've seen that would match perfectly just went for $1,000 on Ebay! I guess black would be much easier to match.

What's the material? Doesn't look like leather.
How's it holding up? I've heard of recovered binacles starting to telegraph the cracks underneath after a few months.

Cheers

My dash was worse than my binnacle.
The one in the photo is a replacement from DMCH.

Its vinyl. My dash hasn't had enough sun exposure as of yet. I'll get back to you on the condition after the summer.

Thanks for the pics. That setup really does look great and that's exactly the same thing that I'm looking to go with: the Hervey binnacle with DMCH's dash. I was big on having my dash recovered in vinyl but after seeing an original dash the other day that was virtually NOS, the DMCH dash isn't bad at all. It's just with Hervey, you never know. Hit and miss. Although, I had a great conversation with him over the phone on some other stuff. Lately, he's been incredibly responsive. I think he has good days/weeks and bad days/weeks. But I like the binnacle he has. DMC CA has a beautifully recovered binnacle with stitching that matches the center console and it really does look great. If during production they had used a design like that, I think it would've been very well received. And the quality of the DMC CA binnacle is outstanding. But there's just something holding me back from going with that stitching. I'm on the fence with it. I think I want to maintain as close to original as I can and I'm on a little bit of a deadline right now so waiting on DMCH's binnacle reproduction isn't going to work for me.

I'll give Hervey's a shot unless I hear differently. Thanks for the replies!

I agree on Hervey's cores, I sent some in last Sept. and he is just now going through all the cores in his shop to determine if they all came in. If he claims he didn't get mine there will be some dispute if he charges my credit card. Other than that I have been satisfied with his offerings and delivery. I just bought the new fuel sending unit he has for $89.

If during production they had used a design like that, I think it would've been very well received. They did. The first hundred or so binnacles were leather, and the steering wheels were vinyl from the start of production as well. DMC realized no one cared if the binnacle's leather, but as many have pointed out the vinyl steering wheel looks "cheap", so they reversed the two, making the steering wheels out of leather and the binnacles out of vinyl.

Side note: the DMC CA binnacles are very, very far off of the original design. When I ordered the leather one from Danny, he was completely unaware that leather was ever used in production, which explains why they're so different. I'm getting mine recovered this spring to match 562's leather binnacle (mine was removed back in '83 and was later replaced with a vinyl one).
