I have read a few projects where owners have removed the paint from their cars and I dont know if anyone has done this beforehand.
Could be of use to people.
Get an inductive proximity sensor, these are a standard type sensor used on machines in most industries. See image for example.
They should be approx $30 in the USA.
You will want one with a short range: 1.5mm or 2 mm. Get a version with an LED.
They are generally 24vdc but you can get 12v versions that could connect directly to a car battery. Otherwise a small 24v power supply would be needed.
Connect power cable to battery or power supply.
The LED goes on when steel is within the range of the sensor. Aluminium typically halves the range of the sensor not that it matters for this test.
Move the sensor over the entire body of the car with the sensor in contact with the paint.
If the led goes off you have a damaged panel and you can then mark where the damage is and decide whether or not stripping the car to stainless is economical for you.
Note: It will not pick up on small dents or hail damage.
