What's up with the relay compartment?!?

Help!! I'm having palpitations right now. Every electrical diagram I have seen of the DeLorean has 7 relays on the bottom row. Why do I only have 6 cavities?16561

Was this something that changed during production? Or am I screwed? I'm not sure if this helps but when I got the car the previous owner had the everything that was fused on #12 (door lights, interior lights etc...) on a kill switch. Also before I uninstalled the switch the lamp delay relay was in the fan relays spot and the fan relay was in the lamp relay's cavity. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

I should also have said that my car has a bypass switch to turn the cooling fans on. I don't know if the relay that is installed is the fan fail relay or something else. The PO gave me a bunch of extra relays he had and one of them was the blue fan fail relay.

Yes, it looks as if something is missing. Or at least it's not wired the way it came from the factory, but you knew at least something about that.

I'd be more concerned about the speaker wire, and wire nut in there... The fan fail relay (with no cover) is concerning. Do the fans cycle automatically, or did someone just run power and a switch with no relay? If that's what was done, I'd seriously worry about fire danger.

I would have guessed that that wire nut has to do with the starter relay change/update that earlier cars get but if this car is really 10287 it shouldn't need the update.

Also yes it appears as though youre missing either a headlight relay or a blower motor speed relay. Do the blower motor and both sets of headlights work?

The blus socket for the fan fail module is gone, most likelky hard-wired underneath. This is not a problem unless you want to insrtall an aftermarket fan controller. The relay with no cover is the fan relay (not fan fail) and should be replaced. The whole area looks pretty grubby.

Thank you so much!!! I was really starting to have panic attacks that I had a major fan fail episode on my hands. The car has driven fine since August and the only reason I was poking around the relay compartment was to replace the old relays and do a general cleaning.

My blower and headlights do work, yes. I have been hunting around and I called the PO to see if he had any ideas about that wire nut. It seems the car had an alarm system at one time that has since been removed. For the time being the car starts and runs so I might just leave well alone for now. BTW your LS1 engine swap is fantastic, awesome project :thumbup:

Does FAN speed 4 work IF you remove the White cube. It appears as thought the module is in the wrong socket or the socket locations have been switched around. The (White) Dome light delay module should be sitting next to the (Opened) fan relay.

It is a little hard to say for certain from your initial photograph, but are all your circuit breakers present and accounted for? You can see the spot I am referring to in the bottom right hand corner of your picture.

Like Dave pointed out, it might be just fine in many ways as is, but there could be some functionality you don't have because of modifications. Some of that could be related to safety or electrical protection.

I would suggest going over your electrical system armed with the wiring diagram for the car and the schematic for the fuse and relay area and making a list of what does not match the original design. Then address each discrepancy case by case to see if it needs to change or can stay the way it is. This could be partly peace of mind as much as technical, which might help any potential palpitations.

Put this on your do-now or do-later list but do it.

Get the wirenuts out of there in favor of proper wire size/color replacing whatever that wire is from end to end in a straight shot with correct connectors at both ends. At worst, replace the wirenut(s) with a solid-crimped and insulated butt connector over correctly-stripped wires. DeLoreans do not like low voltages. Or exposed wires.

Thanks Mr. Jonathan. The circuit breaker not in the photo was moved to the cooling fan bypass switch up on the center console. I recently replaced the otterstat and seal and the cooling fans came on and stopped at the correct temperatures. I haven't really decided yet if I will eliminate the bypass switch or not. It's a Rube Goldstein-type modification but not the absolute worst idea of all time.
