As a new owner whats the deal with the replacement binnacles from DMC Houston? There is a thread on DMC Help that shows 5 pictures of brand new binnacles, but how do you get them?

Edit - my wife just watched me write this and said it wasn't helpful. She's right, and usually is! Truth is the binnacles have been 'in development and ready next month' for 10 years. So far nothing and it really irritates the community.

There's a lot more to the story - most of it heresay or credible but I don't remember the fine details.

DMCH had a company make them, and the company DID NOT take into account the heat that the interior of the car can get to. My understanding was a test out in extreme heat caused one of the prototype binnacles to fold on itself from the heat.

Then another story I heard was a company had said "yes" to making the binnacle, only to pack up and move their entire operation without DMCH knowing.

As stated, heresay and "maybe I remember hearing that from a credible source" stories...... I am sure Dave or James from DMCMW and DMCH could come here and add some strong credibility to the situation.

As far as when the new binnacles will be ready, here's your simple but irritating answer: when they're ready.

Usually it's not the binnacle itself that make owners want a new one.
It almost always is the outside (the vinyl) that's in a deplorable state.

Try and find a company that does upholstery for cars and have them recover the binnacle.
It may turn out cheaper and sometimes even close to your home (less transportation risks and costs).

Just want to throw something out there. In the Wheeler Dealers DeLorean episode from 2011 or 12 (I think...), Mike buys a replacement binnacle from Danny at DMC in California. Now I assume this was a NOS part. Still, does this thread confirm that there are no more NOS binnacles?

Any insight there would be helpful to the OP and me, as I'm in need of a binnacle refurb myself.

There was one on E-Bay not too long ago. Price was ridiculous. You could call a place like Just Dashes and see what they want to recover it. If you do recover it you need to be aware that if you make it bigger by just going over it you will have fitment problems. A proper repair involves removing the vinyl, repairing the foam and then recovering the foam with the proper vinyl. Any attempt at just patching the cracks will not work, the cracks will just reappear because the underlying foam is cracking. Some owners have just gotten a dash cover and put it over the whole dash.

The wheeler Dealer binnacle was a Recovered part. You can see the stitching when they pick it off the shelf. And yes it confirms there are no more DMCH Inventoried NOS Parts. Unless they a have a few set aside for Concours only at $1500 each.

Just make sure your upholstery guy knows what he's doing, I've seen some of these that don't look very good. The quality depends on the original part to an extent, and the ability of the upholsterer to a larger extent. If there are chunks of material missing at the edges it is hard to get it right. Sometime you will see "telegraphing" of the repairs from underneath.

Not bad at all, Cameron - do you guys strip the vinyl and everything like David T mentioned above or is it just leather wrap right over the top? Do they tend to fit well in the dashboards?

They get re-finished before getting covered. So no cracks show. They fit great.

Generally about a week here (Midwest). Note that this is apparently not done at Houston, only CA and MW that I'm aware of.
