DMCH Muffler heatshield coming apart - any way to fix?

I just realized this weekend that my improved metal muffler heat shield from DMCH is delaminating. The woven material stuff is peeling away from the actual metal and is starting to flop around to an extent that has me worried it might fold over and fall onto the muffler itself, which could even be dangerous. Is there a way to re-adhere that fiber material that won't just fall apart from the heat? For what it's worth, the metal itself still looks brand new as does the woven stuff, other than being unglued.

I didn't even realize the metal heat shield from DMCH was laminated material. I just bought one and thought it was a solid stainless sheet.

If yours is delaminating you could sandwich it between two thin pieces of stainless sheet, but you'd have to do some drilling and cutting to match the shape. That might end up being more expensive than just replacing the heat shield with a new one.

I'd contact DMCH and see if they have any kind of warrenty...maybe they'll replace it for you or give you a price break if you buy a new one.

Some pics would be helpful too...they could have changed the design at some point also to avoid the issue you are describing.

Yeah I'll grab a few pics when I get home. It is a sheet of stainless but there's some kind of metallic fabric-like stuff bonded to the back of it.

Just curious. Has anyone considered this type of materials for D's heat shield purposes? I have this (factory original) on my Lotus and looks pretty cool and light. Looks like it is common in UK but not sure about in US.

My heatshield is doing the same as yours (I think). Post a couple pics and I'll confirm. It's just the edges though the last time I checked, so wasn't close to flopping over and melting on anything.

Thanks! I'm a little iffy about dealing with the asbestos though, that was why I wanted to get it off mine.

Here are some pics of what I mean - it's not quite as bad right now, maybe because the shield was laying flat and hasn't been heated up in a few days? I dunno. Either way it looks pretty ugly when you are checking out the engine.

Strange. the one I ordered a few months ago from DMCMW must just be a sheet of stainless steel. It doesn't have any fibers bonded to it like that.

Since the foil and mesh is only on one side you may be able to sandwich another plate over the top to keep it all contained. Your local metal supply shop should carry thin stainless (IE 22 gauge or something in that neighborhood) You could buy a sheet and trace the pattern and cut it out with a set of shears.

You could also try using high temp RTV silicone to try and glue it all back together. Maybe put it in a press or under something heavy while it's curing to keep it flat.

Or you could buy one of the new ones and sandwich that over the top. Or just buy one of the new ones and throw that old one out since apparently the new ones are thicker or something and don't require the fiber mesh at all.

The fabric that you see on your old shield is a non-asbestos heat shield. Metal conducts heat, with that fabric on there it is a lot cooler. Just glue it back on.

Ryan, Ive seen alot of that heat shielding like on your lotus used on many new BMWs that ive been working on too, Im keen on trying it out on my car too. Surely somewhere you can buy sheets or rolls of stuff like that and can be cut and molded to basic shapes for any application. Just got to figure out who the manufacturer is

At work we buy our custom molded stainless/corrugated heat shields from Advance Thermal Products. If you're interested in having something developed for the DeLorean they could definitely do it. Or if you just want flat sheets to fix to an existing heat shield you can probably buy direct from them.

Just took this today. It is painted with a ceramic based paint for heat. Still very solid- no cracks or chips. Let me know

I still have my old one, it was in good shape when I removed it. Can you even ship an asbestos part?

Can you even ship an asbestos part?Even if a courier says they don't allow it, I've never had any of them open a box that was already sealed to check its contents. Although as far as I can tell, UPS at least does not explicitly forbid it. As long as the asbestos is inside a sealed plastic bag inside the box, I think you'll be fine.

Looks good to me. You can ship anything but if for some reason they open the box or it gets damaged there might be questions. Besides, how do any of us KNOW it contains any asbestos? I do not know of anyone that ever had it tested. As for shipping, it should be double-bagged and sandwiched between two stiff pieces of cardboard. Then put into a good box so it can't get bent. I told dmc3130 I would take it.

Does anyone have a good heat shield for the starter and the catalytic convertor? I could use one of each also.
