Fuel Pump Not Pumping

Anyone know what would cause the fuel pump to work intermittently?
I first noticed it when I moved the car via flatbed on a recent move than upon unloading it wouldn't start.
I heard no fuel pump running so I lifted up the carpet in the luggage compt. and pounded the fuel pump cover and of coarse it starts.
its been fine for two weeks than it just did it the other day so I did the same thing and it didn't work so I jumped the RPM relay (87-30) and it started right up.
The fuel pump tests good, anyone know where to look for a short or loose wire which it seems like it is?

Confirm good electrical contacts. Confirm on RPM relay, fuse 7, and inertia switch for starters.

Check the two pin connector near the fuel pump. Just pull the wires that go to the fuel pump if you don't see the connector. That connector is usually just under the opening when you access the pump. Maybe your pounding there made the connection work.

Also inspect those wires leading to the fuel pump. I replaced mine after developing an intermittent problem like yours and tracing them as the source.

Well I tried all the suggestions, cleaned and reconnected the two wires up front for the fuel pump

So we will see in time if the problem continues?
Any other ideas let me know?

Check for a bad ground or bad inertia switch or connections on the ground side of the pump. The inertia switch is in the ground circuit of the pump.

Alternately, connect a temporary known-good bypass ground wire to the pump. If the intermittent problem stops then you will know where to search for the root cause.

Don't keep the bypass ground in place for long. You do want a good inertia switch in the circuit.

In putting things together next to the fuel pump I did notice a small gauge black wire cracked but not broken
Right next to the pump and sending unit. I can only see about 10 inches of the wire anyone knows where that goes?

A black wire in a D is a ground wire from someplace unless a previous owner added it in which case it could be just about anything.

The "ground" wire from the fuel pump goes to the inertia switch so it is not black. It is purple on black.
