What's the best way to remove the center wheel caps without removing or damaging the rim?

With the wheel off, they pop out from behind pretty easily.

How about a plastic pry tool (spudgers)? I'm thinking like one of those tools you use when working on computers. Or maybe even a cheap guitar pick. That wouldn't mar the wheels.

The good news is that since they are hard to remove with the wheels in place the wheel caps are also less likely to get ripped off.

It reminds me of one time I was showing at a concours. At the end of the day a request came over the P.A. system asking for any information about who might have taken/stolen 4 wheel caps off of a Ferrari that was on the lawn....

My black caps have the DMC lettering etched out of them showing through grey plastic behind? Or did the caps vary between VINs?

Maybe you actually have grey caps that have been painted black? The grey caps have been sold out for several years as far as I know so that seems odd, but could be the case.

Painted the D red and the C blue and left the M black on the wheel caps. Also painted the left side of the rim spokes red and the right side of the spokes blue. As the car goes by the colors flip over. Not for everybody , but I like it.

Cars with dark grey rims had color matched dark grey wheel caps. Cars with light grey rims had black caps with the letters painted white.

Personally I bought a set of the wheel cap stainless letters from Ken Koncelik a few years back and I love them. :D

No they are black with the DMC letters etched out to reveal silver plastic behind - the letters aren't painted on. Here's an angled photograph to demonstrate..

Mine are definitely painted, not etched to reveal silver colored plastic. It can give that impression though. Not saying that does not exist, but that is how mine are on my 83. I kept cleaning them thinking it was stubborn dirt, but wasn't. One of the vendors can verify as they have said the same thing when I called and ordered replacements (have yet to put on the car). I had ordered the SS letters before getting new caps, but the machine work on them was a bit sloppy so never used them for that purpose.
