I saw this in person last weekend at the Amelia Concours. Pretty cool!!
Only 2 were built with gullwing doors. The production cars had regular doors. The car has a midmounted 4 banger engine that is turbocharged to 200hp. The windows are sliding manual windows (like Proto-1). The car has warning lights for everything and even has some in the door sill!

Pretty cool and thanks for sharing. I've never seen a proto M1 before. The M1 is one of my favorites. Even though this one has gullwing doors, I still like the production version better. It seems more refined.

Wow! Very cool, Chris. It's not everyday you see a BMW M1, or several of them for that matter.

One of the M1 owners at the show said that everytime he takes his car out for a cruise it gets mistaken for a Delorean or a Pantera. He liked Deloreans though and was interested in attending DCS 2014 since he lives very close to Dayton. I gave him the info on the show.

IIRC, Dave Swingle loves the BMW M1. I know he always wanted to get a production one (if he won the lottery), but I am not sure about the Gullwing M1.

Don't think I've seen an M1 in person, even though it is one of my all time favorites. Lucky you seeing several at once.
Nice. The car that's shown at Ameila is a 1972 BMW Turbo concept. Different designer (Bracq) than for the M1 (Giugiaro). Giugiaro used some elements of the Turbo when he was asked to do the M1 as a Group 5 racing homologation special for BMW.

The car in the back of this photo - behind the Turbo concept - is an M1. Compare their stories in these descriptions:

Yikes...for some reason the dual BMW logos on the back aren't working at all for me.
