What color paint do I use?

I have to paint the front and rear bumper. The paint is peeling off. What color paint do I use and where do I find it? Also the engine cover and rear louvers need to be painted. Is it just a standard flat black?

People on these boards have had good luck with SEM trim black for the black pieces. Many threads with pictures where that one is concerned. If you search "paint codes" in the main search box, you should yield a bunch of good info.

Thanks. Is it a good idea to use spray paint? For the black louvers and engine cover I was thinking just a rustoleum flat black and I was still looking for the grey bumper spray paint. Anyone do this?

I've used the Rustoleum semi-gloss black with good results on the lower engine cover. Ignore the white spots, those are just leaves.

That was the quart thinned with some acetone to make it sprayable. I think it's got a little less gloss than the SEM trim black in the next picture.

I painted that lower engine cover about a year ago and it still looks good. The Rustoleum is cheaper but I do not know how long it will stand up in direct sunlight. The louvers cast a shadow on the engine cover so it's not like it is getting beat on. I know the SEM is designed for exterior surfaces so that's what I'm putting on all the exterior pieces like the louvers and bumpers.

A can of spray paint isn't going to give you the quality or durability of a sprayable automotive finish. If you get the fascias off you might be able to get them painted by a local shop for a little over what you'd spend in materials to do it yourself. It might be worth pricing out.

If you do go the spray can route get more than you think you'll need and get them all from the same batch if possible. If they aren't from the same batch the colors could be slightly off.

Great thanks! I'll look into taking them off and either getting them painted or buy a spray gun and do it myself. any tips on the color of the fascias? I read Jeep Mineral Gray Metallic was a really close match and can get a hold of it very easily

I do believe the Jeep color is the one I went with. I posted a couple pics a while back, I'll see if I can find them.

Where did you buy your mineral grey metallic? And did you also use the SEM trim black for the rear louvers, engine cover and bumper?

I had a local restoration shop do it, I also have not painted the trim pieces, I just use the DMC citrus oil stuff to bring the luster back. IIRC, the paint was DuPont brand. I'll see if I can find it and get a picture up.

Related question: for the engine cover/louvers, what do you use to clean the current coat of paint off to ensure a new coat adheres well? Acetone? Or is there a primer for this?

For the engine cover I just hit it with some grease and wax remover and used a green scotchbrite to give the new coat something to bite. I did prime the area I had repaired but not the entire piece. The current paint was good and not flaking. I just had some fiberglass repairs to make. I'll be doing the same thing to the louvers I think.
