Cracked Windshield

I have a cracked windshield what are my options? I found a used one on (store.delorean) Are these any good. Is there any other places that sell these windshields. I'm ok with getting an aftermarket one that doesn't have the DMC logo. But I would like to stay under $500 shipped preferably new.

None of the windshields the DMC franchises sell are used. (imagine that liability). They are all new reproduction.

$450 standard.
$550 with antenna.
$979 with IR tint. <-- Awesome windshield, have it, love it!

Shipping will be extra unless you have a truck and can drive to DMCMW.

You MUST have shipping insurance on glass. Before getting the glass make sure you have made arrangements with a shop that will be OK with installing glass that they did not supply. Some shops just flat-out will not install glass they do not supply (you might have to let them order it). Also check that they know how to install glass in a Delorean. It is not all that hard but there are a couple of things they need to know to do it right. Any Delorean vender you buy the glass from will work with your glass shop and make sure they know what they are in for. There is no cross-reference on the glass. There is no Lotus glass that fits, it is a myth. Depending on the crack some can be repaired. Check with a shop that does repairs if it is possible in your case.

If your crack is over 6" I wouldn't bother. That's a pretty common insurance industry standard.

Your garage opener, toll transponder, radar detector and any other device of that type won't work properly anymore. GM did that in the90's on the Impala SS. The brand was called Sungate. I think its one of the worst ideas ever. I was so happy that my windshield broke and I could replace it with a standard one.

My garage door opener still works, but yes the radar detector and toll transponder have been affected. Not a very big issue for me though. I'm in my 30's now and don't excessively speed anymore. I don't use the only tolls in my state (HOV/Toll Lanes), so when I do use my I-Pass on trips I just hold it out the window.

The significant benefit is complete UV blocking, and ~70% IR blocking. What does that mean? No more faded and cracked dashboards and binnacles. Now if only I could have gotten this windshield when my binnacle was still in good condition. It also helps the air conditioner work way better and keeps the car cooler. No more sunburns on the right arm/hand either.

I also am getting 3M Crystalline 50% tint put on the side windows. This has 99% UV and ~95% IR blocking abilities. Now I'll have an extremely cool inside an no more sunburns on either arm/hand.

Oh my garage door opener still worked too...but only if my bumper was nearly touching the door. Once I replaced the windshield I could open it nearly 2 houses away so that it was fully open as I rolled up to go in.

My '94 Buick Roadmaster also had a sungate windshield and 2 other issues I had were that my GPS wouldn't work and I had poor cell phone reception...unless I mounted the GPS on my driver's window and I had to hold my phone on my left ear only. Both are bad options. I started using speaker phone when necessary, but I was happy to sell that car and be rid of the windshield. Never again will I own a car with an IR windshield. I'll do what I've done since I started driving. Park in shade, use a dashmat when that's not possible and tint my side windows to "the legal limit."

To further elaborate, the UV/IR windshield uses a metallic power embedded within the lamination film. This is what blocks the radio signals.

The 3M Crystalline tint is ceramic/molecular based, (its a step up from other ceramic versions). It does not block any type of radio signal. So doing the side windows will still leave me with what RF functionality I have today.

Unfortunately tinting a standard windshield with 3M Crystalline is illegal just about anywhere, despite them having a 90% light transmission version.

Edit: My GPS and cell phone have been unaffected by the windshield.

Jim - your state allows 50% tinting on the main front windows? It totally sucks that CA doesn't. I would LOVE to darken the cabin up a bit.

In the U.S. tint is measured by the amount of light that is allowed to pass through so the lower the number the darker the tint. 5% is considered "Limo." Each state is different. In FL you can have 28% on the front side windows and 15% on the back doors and rear glass. You can basically paint your windshield black down to the "AS-1" line, but nothing below...without a Dr's prescription.
